Introduction of Augmented Reality in Education

This report proposes the implementation of Augmented Reality in the City of Westminster College to enhance the educational system and improve the quality of education. It discusses what Augmented Reality is, how it works, the setup and installation considerations, training requirements, support and maintenance required, and legal requirements. The report concludes that Augmented Reality can bring significant improvements to the education system.

Abstract
Education is a very integral part for anyone’s life. Without a proper education there is no scope
for development for a person. With the increase in modern technology the scope for educational
institutes to deliver better and high quality learning is also increasing rapidly. Since the
introduction of computer in the education system has changed the landscape completely. Now,
with changing time and technology educational institutes are transforming them and adapting to
the latest changes in the technology to deliver better service. In this report, a proposal is made to
implement Augmented Reality or more popularly known as AR in the City of Westminster
College, located in central London. The discussions were made on how this technology can bring
change in the educational system of the college and what are the risks of implementation of this
technology. In conclusion, it was found that AR technology needs a lot of time for its
implementation but is very useful and can improve the quality of education drastically.

Introduction
Technology and internet are increasing at a rapid rate and the adaption is fast too. In the
recent time Virtual reality, Cloud computing, Artificial intelligence and Augmented Reality are
making a firm ground for them. This report will focus on the implementation of Augmented
Reality or AR in educational system or more specifically in the City of Westminster College in
central London. The AR technology will introduce an interactive way of learning and real time
experience of the subject. The risks and the management of those risks are also discussed
through this report. Finally, a proposal to implement this technology in the education system is
made.1
Discussion
What is this technology called Augmented Reality and how it works?
Augmented Reality or AR integrates digital information in the real world and in real time
experience. The layers of digital information are superimposed on a real time view of the real
world that expands the real world experience. The term was coined back in 1990s when there
were head mounted displays in fighter aircrafts that would show the altitude, speed, direction and
other information. In recent years, games like Pokémon Go and wearable technologies like
Google Glass, Microsoft’s HoloLens were introduced in the market which uses Augmented
Reality. 2

Using augmented reality users can experience the real world with digital information on
their devices like the glasses, smart phones and head-mounted displays. The components that are
used in this technology are camera and sensors, processing, projections and reflections.
Technologies that are used with these components are S.L.A.M or Simultaneous Localization
and Mapping and depth tracking in which the sensors are used to calculate the distance between
two objects. 3
Set-up or Installation consideration
The installation or the implementation cost of AR technology is moderate but
complicated and is not impossible. AR tools are available in the market to create content but
maybe not be sufficient to create engaging content. The teachers need proper education to create
content with AR tools or the institute might hire a professional to do the task. Some of the tools
to create content are Augment, available for Android and iOS devices, ZVR and Blippar.
Training required
To create content which are engaging and interactive teachers will need structured
education of the technology or else the option to outsourcing is available.
Support or maintenance required
Unlike VR education where gears are used and investments are to be made in both gears
and development tools and to maintain them, AR education uses the Smartphone only to deliver
content so there is no need for extra gear. Although, the implementation might be time

consuming and required great expertise, for that reason a professional should be hired for the
development and maintenance of the contents. 4
Legal requirements
There are no as such legal requirements for the implementation of AR but it should be
kept in mind that AR contents should not affect the mental health of the student.
Conclusion
The use of AR in the City of Westminster College can expand the scope of learning
process for the students. With interactive contents the students can learn and experience contents
related to their subject in real time and this can improve the learning curve for every student.
Although, the cost of implementation is moderate but the content development requires some
good amount of time and education for the teachers but this technology can surely bring a lot of
improvements in the system and the service. This proposal is made based on the usability of the
AR technology and how this can be a revolution for the education industry.
