INTRODUCTION
Management is a set of activities which includes planning, organising, Directing and controlling
of physical, financial and human resources in an organization to achieve its set goals effectively
and efficiently
The purpose of the following report is to understanding and analyzing the usage of Management
and Business functions in a business environment. The report is based on Tesco which is a
leading retail Supermarket organization in United Kingdom. The report will include various
management theories and business functions which influences the management at Tesco.
MAIN BODY
Task
1- Management Structure and Business Functions
Organizational Structure - Organizational structure refers to the set of activities
conducted in term of coordination, task allocation, controlling and monitoring that directed to
achieve the set goals of a firm. The management of these activities helps a business entity to
achieve its desired results in the form of profit formation. In Tesco the organizational structure
includes employees, manager and top officials of a company. The process of carrying out of a
task is carried out by employees, controlling is done by manager whereas supervision is provided
by the top officials.
Types of organizational structures – The management of Tesco implies four major types of
organizational structures
Hierarchical structure – The advantage of this structure is that it defines proper level of
authority and responsibility in which the command goes from top level to lower level
employees in an organization. The disadvantage on the other hand is that it may push
lower level employee to think of less ownership in the firm.
Functional structure – The advantage of this structure is that it arranges the employees in
a proper level according to their skills. The disadvantage is that it can create unrest within
employees wanting to get their desired department.
