What does it mean to be an effective manager in a diverse workplace?
In the modern day business, challenges in the business have increased. The workplaces have
become diverse in terms of the job roles that are being produced within the firm. At the same
time, numbers of jobs have also increased. There is a very new generation known as
Millennial that are part of the major workforce. In such an environment, becoming an
effective manager is not easy as the challenges have become very much diverse (Chuang,
2013).
The first and the most basic challenge which is also illustrated in the Ted talk is that today’s
workforce is not satisfied with what they are doing. This is because most of the people feel
that their work is broken. It is the technology of idea that drives us for doing work. The way
people think about their work gets reflected back on their performance. The same is the case
with managers as the challenges confronting them are large and without the confidence that
they could tackle the situation it is not easy for them to solve the problems. It is their believe
system that allows them to achieve things. In the time when people are frustrated from their
monotonous jobs, it is essential that managers must provide feedbacks and creates human
nature that is able to perform their jobs without getting dissatisfied (Schwartz, 2015).
The basic requirement of the managers in today’s time is that they must be an able
communicator. The impact of technology can also be seen on their communication and
lifestyle. In such an environment, for becoming an effective manager it is crucial that they are
able to work on different technologies. It is seen that most of the people in this generation
follows dominant communication style which is reflected from their behavior (Hartman and
McCambridge, 2011). Most people rely on their own communicational style in which they
are comfortable and also believe that others communicate in the same manner and hence
creating communication barrier.
In order to achieve success, it is crucial that managers themselves have flexibility in their
communicational approach. An effective manager is one that manages the ethical issues
arising in the business. Since the nature of the business has changed drastically hence
managers must be able to ensure that ethics are not violated (Hartman and McCambridge,
2011). This puts pressure on the managers as they have to check that none of their decisions
are unethical.
An effective manager must always be able to understand the demands of their employees.
People come from different cultural backgrounds. This is having effect on their behavior

which ultimately has an effect on the needs and demands of the people. This is also essential
for managing diversity at the workplace which is the basic need of the HRM these days.
Managers are facing many kinds of social dilemmas where they have to act such as they will
have to respect all the social norms wherever they are operating. The social values and ethics
will have to be respected. The type of social condition such as economic condition and
employment in the society plays a major role in the decisions made by managers. For being
an effective manager, he/she must be able to able to take decisions that are innovative and
provides a total solution to the challenges that are faced by the company (Prause and
Mujtaba, 2015). This must be supported by the strategies that are used in different situations.
Without innovative strategies it is difficult for managers to organize their resources so as to
gain competitive advantage over the others. It is also essential that managers these days apply
different technologies in different operations as it improves the effectiveness of the
organization. Being an effective manager in the diverse workplace, means that managers
must be an able to become a team worker and team leader (Gotsis and Grimani, 2016). This
is because in the diverse workplace the chances of conflicts are high due to their
understanding difference hence how the manager controls these situations is what makes
them effective or ineffective.
In conclusion it can be said that managers must ensure that people that are doing their task
are able to apply their ideas to it and must not feel that their work is broken. An effective
manager must be able to have flexible communication so that they are able to understand the
people from different cultural backgrounds. The factors such as ethical, cultural, social and
team are having impact on the behavior of the managers.
