IT Networking Designing 4
Introduction
Computer networks are one of the wide areas that need to be understood carefully and keenly by
any organization with thoughts of designing a network (Bellovin, 2011). In the design of the network,
there is a need for one to consider some of the factors such as the scalability, security, authorization,
monitoring and manageability (Anada, 2017). Ideally, for one to run the objectives of the organization
one have to interact with the staff and get to know their needs as well as those of the people they serve.
LUCMAT is a company that has more than 80 workstations. They have decided to set up a local area
network infrastructure that will have a centralized authentication. The LAN structure to be set up will be
having three departments namely the Sales, HR, and design. As an administrator, the task will be offering
provisions to services such as how the objects such as the computers, printers, groups and users can be
managed in each department. In this concept, the three departments have got several numbers of devices.
In this case, according to the case study, the HR department has about 8 PCs and printers, the Design
department with 35 PCs and Printers while the Sales department has about 40 personal computer and
printers.
In making the communication a success and effective, there is need to install the three servers
namely the Domain name server, Email server and the Web Server. The Email server will be used in
facilitating all the communication such as sending and receiving emails in the network between the
departments. Ideally understanding the idea is basic but implementing may be a disaster, so there is a
need for one to consider the appealing design that can help in making this a success. The DNS will be
used in managing and controlling the domain of the company network. The web server will be applied in
making the network to be able to host their own website on the web.
LUCMAT Company is entitled to usage of a private IP address of about 192.168.10.0/24 in all of
its department. In this case, one is required to examine all the networking principles and the associated

protocols indicating their application and benefits which will indeed help in choosing the best topology
for this network design. Ideally, after the topology of the network has been identified, it will be easy to
explain all the network devices to be applied as well as their usage in helping LUCMAT develop their
network. A network can be designed after identifying the devices to apply in the design. Once the
network design has been done, it is now possible to configure all the devices and checking if there are
problems and thus in case they exist one can give a recommendation on what to expect.
Network Principles and Protocols
The major purpose for any network is ensuring that all the devices connected are able to share the
resources regardless of the devices that are used for transmitting such as the scanners, printers, emails,
files among others (Ciampa, 2012).
Network types, Standards and Protocols in Existence
Ideally, in the context of computer networking, there is a need for one to know the type of
networks in existence so that one major that with the case study of the company whose network design is
to be implemented. In this case, the network types, standards applied and the protocols used will be
discussed in details showing their benefits and constraints.
Network Types
There exist several types of networks depending on the area of application and the bandwidth
they use. Some of the major types of network in use in the current era are such as the one explained
below.
Local Area Network.
This is usually abbreviated as LAN, it is used in connecting a group of workstations and other
network devices such as a hub, printers, laptops, smartphones, scanners among others so that they can
communicate, transmit and share information and files or resources effectively over the network

(Jacobson, 2011). Ideally, just as the name suggests, “Local” this means that the network is within the
same area or maybe in a building but sometimes it can big like running over a campus.

Merits of LAN
The PCs can be able to share all the peripherals gadgets such as the printers and thus
making it cheaper than purchasing a printer for every workstation (Kizza, 2017).
It is easy to save work centrally on the file server of the network.
User need not go back with the same device all the time
Demerits of LAN
The network only covers a small geographical area
There are a lot of security issues
Very difficult to maintain it as it may require a very skilled expert
If the server is affected, then the users can be affected in all aspects as it manages all the
other workstations (Knapp 2010).
