Purpose: The study indents to explore and evaluate the
connection between the performance and
business strategy. Meanwhile the paper also
focuses on the composition of combined
strategies.
Theory: The paper used Zara and Covin’s (1993) scale
in order to classify the businesses in addition
with Porter’s typology. Meanwhile, the paper
also used Luo and Zhao’s suggested
amendments were used without changing the
scale. Shortell and Zajac’s self-typing scale has
been used in order to classify businesses in line
with Miles and Snow’s typology.
Methodology: A survey has been conducted over the
managers of 277 retail businesses in the USA.

Survey and sample size: 277 responses were collected from managers of
retail businesses.
The paper Parnell, (2010) intended to conduct an investigation on the connection between
business strategy and performance while shedding light on the composition of combined
strategies. The study supported the integrity of Porter’s original typologies as well as Mile’s and
Snow’s typologies in the US retail industry. The paper conducted a survey on 277 individuals of
management level, out of which 35 individuals were non managers while 79 were from the lower
management level, 109 individuals were middle managers and of them 54 were the managers of
upper ranking level. From the survey, it has been found that higher performance was connected
with combination strategy majorly. While at the same time it is also seen that strategic clarity is
the extent to which an organization’s strategic intent is reflected by a single strategy. The
findings of the paper also states that the strategic intent of an organization is also closely
connected with the organizational performance. From the findings it can be said that the
organizations that has high and low strategic clarity outperforms the organizations which have
moderate strategic clarity. Moreover, the paper proposes the concept of strategic clarity while at
the same time gives actual evidence which provides a support to the U-shaped link among the
business performance and the strategic clarity. However, the research paper is not free from
limitations. In order to conduct the research, the paper only surveyed the retail sector in the

United States. The other industry or other countries were not included in the survey. Thus there
is a huge scope of further research since the country wise scenario can differ.

Purpose: The study aims to review the popular Carroll’s
Pyramid of corporate social responsibility.
Doing so, the author of article makes
comments on the usage of the frameworks and
gives a summary on the four-part definitional
framework based on which the pyramid was
developed.
Theory: Since the author of the article critically
reviewed Carroll’s pyramid of Corporate
Social responsibility, no other framework was
selected in order to conduct the research. The
author of the article mainly evaluated different
aspects related to Carroll’s model of CSR.
