Introduction
The scope of working in health and social care centre is increasing day by day in various parts
across the world. There are many degrees available to educate students who are passionate to
work in health and social care organizations. There are children and old men in society who are
vulnerable in the society and it is necessary to protect them through the health and social care
service. This project is based on the assessment of the skills and competencies of an individual
who wants to build his or her career though providing services to the weaker section of the
society. The individual’s strengths and weaknesses of the individual are identified here and the
strengths are emphasized and weaknesses are removed through various managerial and
leadership theories. Finally, the ethics, principles and values are also nurtured in the minds of the
individual for further development.
Reflection on academic journey and professional development needs
I, holding a degree and experience in the health and social care service, have gained the position
of Level NVQ 2 and 3 in health and social care service and I have a certificate in the same for
my experience. During my studies, I have attended many training programmers for gaining
experience in the same field. I have been working as a ‘senior mental health support worker’ and
activities coordinator in Department of Health and Social Care in London. I have a passion for
this health and social care service and it is my aim for the last two years that I shall further
extend my career in health and social care service and I like. In the last two years, I have
achieved the Level 5 HND BTEC Diploma in health and social care from the City University of
London and this degree has helped in my professional field to a great extent.
Professional development needs
Since childhood, I have nurtured a passion in the health and social care service for the vulnerable
section of the society. I have noticed that many children and old persons suffer due to their
abnormal condition of the physical and mental health and due to their disability. They are
isolated from their friends and relatives due to their mental and physical disability. I have to take
further opportunities in many health and social care organizations in London and in other places
in the world. As a health and social care professional, I have planned to continue my professional

development to for investing more as required in this industry. My skills and competencies will
be developed further through the personal development plan. I shall take the training in this field
through various training and development programs with the updated data and information in the
health and social care field. The development plan will be based on the information of the UK
health and social care organizations. The development plan will be a theory based training in
which the strategies for self-development will be mentioned. I shall create a portfolio recording
the needs and development. Critical evaluation will be done after a particular period for further
modification of skills and competencies. Healthcare practice involves many activities like
medication, mental consolation of the patients, barriers from ethical dilemma and some others
(Congress, 2017). Hence, a smart professional development is necessary for my personal
development. I have decided to make an entry with a graduate entry post in a reputed heath care
organization. Through this development plan, my experience in this field will be rich, positive
and valuable.
Job opportunities with degree qualification
With the growing needs and demands in the health and social care sector, the job opportunities in
the UK and in other countries in the world is increasing day by day. I have noticed that due to the
various climatic problem, food quality and some other problem, a large portion in our society is
affected by various diseases like dementia, diabetes, lung disease, sugar, and some other mental
diseases and the victims are resorting to the health and social care organizations for being cure.
The family members of the victims are also realizing the needs of such health and social care
organizations. I have done a course in the health and social care services from the City
University of London. Moreover, I have been working for 10 years in Department of Health and
Social Care in London. Based on my degrees and experience I think that I can apply my skills
and knowledge and those skills and knowledge will me to succeed. Although I shall prioritize my
job as a health and social care worker, I may also find jobs as a Community support manager or a
trainer or developer in any health and social care organization. To maintain my job
responsibilities, I think it is necessary to acquire more degree and with more qualification,
personal development is also necessary.

Barriers and limitations
Health and social care activities has a great a field and hence, this field has a lot of activities to
perform. There may be many barriers at the time of working in a health and social care
organization like facing ethical dilemma, problem at the time of medication to the patients, make
the patients understand to lead a cure life and some others. The SWOT analysis is a tool for
identifying strengths and weakness in the field of working. I have done my own SWOT analysis
and have found my strengths and weakness for working in a health and social care organization.

Analysis: Based on the above SWOT, I have analyzed the strengths and weakness that will help
me to develop my skills and competencies to work in a health and social care organization. As I
have the NVQ Level 2 certificate in customer care service, the Diploma of HND BTEC and have
a lot of experience in this field, I think that this will help me a lot in my future in many health
and social care organization. Analyzing the weakness, I have realized that apart from lack of

financial funds for training, I lack proper leadership and cannot conflict among my group
members that I have to remove through some leadership and management theories and my own
knowledge and experience. The new comers in these sectors are my threats for working that I
have to consider also.
Remedies:
For maintaining a good leadership, I shall follow various leadership theories to handle my group
members while working in a health and social care unit. Under the Kurt Lewin’s Change model
theory, change is a common thing in any organization. The first stage is the unfreezing under
which stage the new change in the organization will be accepted and all the group members will
be prepared to accept the change. The old policies will be broken down in this stage. The second
stage is Change under which the people in the organization will look into the new change and the
specific issues will be highlighted. The final stage is Refreeze under which people will accept all
the changes and new ways to accept change. Apart from this theory, I shall follow the Belbnin
Team Role theory with which I shall identify individual member’s qualities and shall allocate
their responsibilities so that they can perform well (Eubanks et al., 2016). I shall apply my
knowledge of rules and regulations in the health and social care organization as I have a strong
experience in this field. The rules and regulations are the personal interests of the service users,
ethics in health and social care organization, proper medication and dealing with different
patients.

Management is the other art of working in an organization. When I shall work in the health and
social care organization, I shall look after the overall culture of my organization. The enriched
culture will reform the behavior of my team members and thus they will be more cautious to
perform their roles. I shall apply some behavioral theories to build proper behavior of my group
members in the health care centre. I shall arrange proper training as a manager in my
organization for the development of skills and competencies of my group member. Conflicts
among the group members in health and social care are a common thing that I have to resolve
through maintaining a good relation among the group members. A good culture can fetch a good
relation among the group members in a working group. I shall make my group members
understand the benefits of the maintaining good relation so that they can share the valuable
information with one another in the organization. I shall resort to some other policies for
removing the conflicts between the service providers and the service users in my care home.
Smart Action Plan:
I shall create a smart action plan whenever I shall be given responsibility of a particular patient.
My goal is to be an efficient care worker firstly, and then work as manager in a health and social

care unit. I shall firstly, set some smart objectives for my plan. The basic objectives for each plan
will be:

Smart action plan for objective No 1: Here I am working as a service provider
Specific In this stage, my goal is clear in the sense that, I want to work as a

Measurable In this stage, my goal will be measurable and I shall achieve my

Relevant In this stage, my prime goal should be aligned with other related
goals. For example, to be a good service provider and to compete
with other care workers, I shall evaluate how far my training is
relevant. However, with my training, other degrees or qualifications
will be necessary to be a good service provider.
Time -bound I shall fix a target date to finish my plan within a stipulated time. In
this stage, I shall consider other resources to fulfill my plan and then
I shall set maximum 2 months to cure a patient.

Smart action plan for objective No 2: Here I am working as a team leader in my group in a
health and social care unit
Specific In this stage, my goal is clear in the sense that shall work as a
successful manager in a health and social care unit.
Measurable In this stage, my goal will be measurable, I shall achieve my goals
by gaining experience through learning some leadership theories,
and conflicting resolution measures so that I can led my team of
service providers.
Achievable My goal must be realistic for achieving the success. I shall complete
my training in time and I shall avail all the necessary resources to
lead my group members and to resolve conflicts among them. Thus,
I shall be a good leader and manager as well in my care unit and
shall achieve my goal.
Relevant In this stage, my prime goal should be aligned with other related
goals. For example, to be a good manager and a leader, my training
will be relevant to lead my team members. However, with my
training, other degrees or qualifications will be necessary to be an
efficient manager and leader. I shall achieve all those qualities.
Time -bound I shall fix a target date to lead my team and prepare them as efficient
service providers within a stipulated time. I shall set maximum 3
months to prepare my successful team.

How the barriers and limitations can be overcome in order to achieve a successful outcome
of career goal
Working in a health and social care organization is to handle different types of patients in a
health care service sectors. I have to face with various barriers and challenges when I shall work
in a health and social care unit. The main barriers and challenges are the following:
Ethical dilemma: Ethical dilemma is a very common challenge in a health and social care
organization. In such a situation, I may get confused in several situations and I cannot decide
what to do in such a situation. For example, if a dementia patient who has a mental misbalance
and is not agree to take medicine the service provider can neither behave rudely with the patient
nor he or she can leave the situation without giving him the medicine (Doherty and Purtilo, ,
2015).
Remedy: In such a situation, I shall think over the situation and resort to a way in which the
patient will take the medicine and he or she will not be offended on me. I shall take also the help
of the family members of the service users in such a situation. I shall consider different situation
and resolve the problem.
Medication: This disturbing situation can be created while providing the medicine to the service
users. It is also one of the major problems (Manners, 2017).
Remedy: I shall console the service users in various ways with my patients and shall oblige my
service users to take medicine timely.
Conflicts among my colleagues in my care home: Conflicts among my colleagues can be the
third challenges that I can face in my health and social care centre. Such conflict will pollute the
entire environment of my care home.
Remedy: In such a situation, I shall maintain good relation among my team members and thus,
reform their behavior so that they can be co-operative with one another. Thus, they share their
information with one another and they will perform well.

Ethical principles and value:
Ethical principles and value is very important in a health and social care unit. I shall follow some
ethical principles when I shall work in a health care unit. I shall maintain the privacy of personal
information of all the service users and shall not leak out any valuable information of any
patients. I shall ask no such question to any service user so that he or she may become offended
on me.
Conclusion:
Need for health and social care workers is increasing day by day all over the world and hence,
the scope for the job of a health and social care worker is increasing. Many organizations train
individuals in the field of health and social workers. This project is based on various working
strategies in a health and social unit. An example of an individual has been taken who has a lot of
degree and experience in this field. In this project, it has been highlighted how through various
strategies, the individual has identified his or her strengths and weaknesses and has made a
position as a good health and social care worker.
