Reflective Essay
Leadership is an art and a practical application of the learning and skills to lead the organization
and individual to achieve the organizational goals and objectives. Leadership in the present day
has to be flexible, dynamic and responsive to the context (Bolman & Deal, 2017). Leadership is
the ability of the leaders to influence and motivate the team to work towards the common goals
and objectives of the organization and also to ensure that the employees work with enhanced
productivity reaching their own millstones and personal objectives (Northouse, 2018).
Values can be understood as constructs which represents generalized behaviour or states of
affairs which are considered to be important by the individuals (Goleman, 2017). Values have a
strong role to play in defining the individual, hence it becomes extremely important to have
values which are progressive in nature. Instrumental values are the values which an individual
uses in his daily life to take decision about one’s life (Park & Slattery, 2014). Two of the
instrumental values which have helped me as a person and a leader to grow and play an
important part of my regular life are; ambitious and responsible.
I am an extremely ambitious person right from the beginning of my school days, moving to the
college days and then to my working as a professional. I always aim for the sky, and I not only
aim but I work hard towards my goals. Being ambitious is a very important aspect of leadership
as it helps in pushing up the envelope of excellence higher and higher without any saturation
(Rowold, Diebig & Heinitz, 2017). AN ambitious person not only values his own time, but also
motivates people around him to be ambitious and work towards long term goals. It is the value
of a person in being ambitious which has led to thousands of innovation in the past and same
lying in the future(
Second most important value which has helped me in defining my leadership is being
responsible. I am a highly responsible person, not only in my personal, but also in my
professional lives. I believe strongly in the concept of work-life harmony, and this can only be
achieved if the person understands his responsibility in all the dimension of his life. It is nearly
impossible for me to miss a deadline, or to skip an already scheduled meeting, I always keep a
track of time and ensure that I deliver what is expected out of me through the virtue of being
responsible in my business conduct. Thus, being responsible and ambitious has helped me in
sharpening my leadership skills.
