LEADERSHIP REFLECTIVE REPORT1
Introduction
As opined by Mendoza, Orea-Amador and Kendall (2016), the adequate usage of the
practice of leadership offers the opportunity to the leaders to effectively influence the behavior or
for that matter the attitude of the team members or the followers for the attainment of the desired
team objectives. Antonakis and Day (2017) are of the viewpoint that the leadership rather than
being a static practice is a dynamic one and thus the leaders are required to undertake continuous
self-development for the attainment of the desired goals or the objectives. More importantly, it
had been seen that the different situations or for that the experiences that the leaders face also
contributes substantially towards the development of their leadership capabilities (DuBois et al.
2015). In this reflective report, I would undertake an analysis of my own leadership development
in the particular context of a situation that I faced through the usage of Kolb’s reflective cycle.
Overview of the Situation
An important incident that I experienced which in turn improved my capability as a
leader was the one which I experienced while working in a creative advertisement company. The
situation occurred around two years when we received an urgent contract for a project which
needed to be completed within a span of only four days since the client cannot wait any longer.
Furthermore, the project was so complicated in nature that if the employees worked for their
normal shift hours they would not have been complete the project. Thus, realizing the importance
of the project for the company I persuaded a few of the employees to stretch their working hours
for those four days so as to complete the project. I would say that this was not an easy task since
the employees were hesitant to work outside of their shift hours. However, through the usage of
effective communication skills, the art of persuasion, setting an example for them by staying late

myself and other leadership practices I was able to influence the employees to complete the
project within the deadline which was given to us. I personally believe that this incident not only
helped me to realize the important skills that the leaders are required to have but also helped in
the development of my own leadership abilities as well.
Selection of the Reflective Model
The reflective model that had been selected for the analysis of the situation which I
mentioned above is Kolb’s reflective cycle. Kolb’s reflective is one of the most commonly used
reflective models for the analysis of the different experiences or for that matter the situations that
the individuals have faced (Fernandez, Chelliah and Halim 2015). More importantly, as
discussed by Chattopadhyay (2019), the effective usage of Kolb’s reflective cycle requires the
individuals to take into account its three important components, namely, experience, reflection
and learning. The major objective of this cycle is to offer the required opportunity to the
individuals to undertake an objective analysis of the different situations or the experiences that
they have faced in the past and also to derive the necessary learning from the same (Husebø,
O'Regan and Nestel 2015).
I have opted for the usage of this particular reflective cycle since it will offer me the
opportunity to effectively as well as objectively analyze the situation which I faced and also the
manner in which it contributed towards the development of my leadership abilities. More
importantly, the adequate usage of this reflective cycle would also afford me the opportunity to
reflect on the situation in the light of the present knowledge or for that matter the understanding
that I have gained and thereby determine the things that I did correctly and the things which I did
not.
