TITLE: “To investigate the reasons of high number of staff absenteeism and its
impact on organisational performance. A case Study on Superdry plc, United
Kingdom.”
INTRODUCTION
Absenteeism is referred as the habit or practice of being in absence. It is the overall man
shifts lost due to absence as a percentage of number of manpower scheduled to work. In other
words, it is referred as the failure of a worker to report for duty at the time when he or she is
scheduled to work. It is becoming one of the major issues in company due to which their
productivity and performance impacts highly. This report is based on Superdry which is a
branded clothing firm of United Kingdom that offers high quality clothing products to its
customers (Aarseth, and et. al., 2017). The company was established in year 2003 and its
headquarters is located in Cheltenham, United Kingdom. This report covers aim, objectives and
scope of project along with their proper justification. It also includes different research methods,
sources of information and data to support project aim, options or alternatives and their critical
evaluation. Apart from this, it evaluates the analysis to draw conclusion, includes
recommendations and critically analyse the influence of those recommendations. In addition to
this, it includes information about the medium to be utilised to present the outcomes of project
and its contribution in strategic objectives. At last the outcomes of project and substantial
development and changes that it brings are included along with evaluation of impact and success
of project.

A.C. 1.1 - Determine a topic of investigation that has a strategic implication
Staff absenteeism is defined as the habitual non-presence of a staff member at his/ her job.
It is the absence from work which extend an implied limit of what will be considered normal and
reasonable because of personal time, occasional illness or vacation. The employees are expected
by their employer to miss some work for legitimate reasons (Baumgartner, 2014). However, it
becomes an issue for the firm when a worker is absent unexpectedly and repeatedly, especially if
the employees should be paid when they are absent. Superdry is one of the well-known clothing
firm of United Kingdom which offers stuffs combine vintage Americana styling along with

Japanese inspired graphics. The company is facing the issue high number of staff absences due to
which its productivity declines continuously. In order to overcome this issue, the senior manager
of the company have been asked to perform a project to investigate high number of staff
absenteeism in department. In order to accomplish this project, manager required to form clear
aim and objectives of the investigation in order to ensure its successful completion. This project
intent to identify the reasons behind high staff absenteeism. Identifications of appropriate reasons
or causes behind this will help senior manager of company in resolving the issue of staff
absenteeism and improving productivity as well as performance of company. Determination of
causes also helps in formulating appropriate strategies that helps in motivating employees and
increasing their participation within activities and operations of firm that leads it towards
attainment of long term sustainability in market (Bucheli and Wadhwani, 2014).
A.C. 1.2 - Discuss the aim, scope and objectives of the project
Project aim is stated as the overall purpose of project and is the main reason of performing
a particular project. It reflects the long term results. On the other hand, objectives are referred as
the particular goal of the company. These describes desired outcomes of the project that often
involves tangible goals. Properly formulated aim and objectives provides direction to the
operations of project team towards accomplishment of the agreed goals within specified time,
quality, scope and budget standards (Chatterji and Fabrizio, 2014). The aim and objectives in
relation of Superdry’s strategic management project are mentioned below:
Aim of project:
The aim of this project is “To investigate the reasons of high number of staff absenteeism
and its impact on organisational performance. A case Study on Superdry plc, United Kingdom.”
Objectives of project:
The objectives in relation to this project are as follows:
To understand the concept of staff absenteeism at workplace.
To identify the different reasons of staff absenteeism at workplace.
To assess the impact of high staff absenteeism on business performance of Superdry.
To reduce the absenteeism of employees in workplace by determining different ways to
overcome the issue.
