2LI-FI TECHNOLOGY
1. Introduction
In the era of digital communication, Li-Fi is a form of wireless communication technology that makes use of LED
lights for transmitting data in a wireless mode. The discussion in this report puts emphasis on the concept of Li-Fi
and background of the technology. The concept of the technology helps in understanding the competitive advantage
of using the technology. The following sections in the report formulates the concept of Li-Fi, identify involved risks
within the chosen technology and also discuss plans for mitigating them. The final section of the report would thus
define the needed skills for the team who would implement the technology.
2. Section 1 – Concept Description
2.1 Title of Concept
Li-Fi Technology
2.2 The Idea in a nut shell
Li-Fi is considered as a technology based on wireless optical networking, which makes use of light-
emitting diodes (LEDs) for the purpose of transmission of data. Li-Fi is mainly prepared with the help of a chip that
would modulate the frequency of light for transmission of optical data. The data of Li-Fi is transmitted with the help
of LED bulbs and thus received by photoreceptors. The Li-Fi concept would be derived by many people as it is free
and provides faster transfer of data.
2.3 Value proposition offered by this Concept
The Li-Fi technology has a broad spectrum for the purpose of transmission of data as compared to the
traditional methods based on wireless communication that mainly rely on radio waves. The basic principle used by
the technology is that data would be transferred with the help of LED light based on varying intensities. With the use
of Li-Fi technology, there would be a massive change in the way the internet in accessed. The security within the
technology would be high as the data cannot be accessed without the presence of light.
2.4 Literature review, prior arts, existing patents and Background of Concept
The primary idea of Li-Fi was introduced by Harald Has in TED Global Talk in July 2011. The present
wireless networks, which help in connecting to Internet provide slow connection when multiple devices are
connected with a single source. However, Li-Fi technology transmits data with light waves. Li-Fi technology
implements the use of transceivers that are fitted within LED lamps.
The Li-Fi utilizes visible light comprising of electromagnetic spectrum in the range of 400 THz and 800
THz in the form of optical carrier for the purpose of illumination and transmission. Li-Fi uses fast light pulses for
transmitting information in the form of wireless medium.
3. Section 2 – Concept Analysis
3.1 Competitive Advantage
With the impact of Li-Fi technology, it will certainly overtake the present Wi-Fi mode of connecting with
the Internet. Due to the enhancement of Li-Fi technology, most of the organizations would make use of this
technology to access the internet.
3.2 How competitive advantage will be sustained
The competitive advantage of using Li-Fi technology would be sustained as this technology would be used
within various future applications. These include medical applications, education systems, underwater applications,
disaster management and other sensitive areas.
3.3 Assumptions in formulating the idea
The assumptions that helps in formulating the idea of Li-Fi technology are:
Due to presence of light in every corner, there is a great scope of use and evolution of the technology.
Li-Fi technology would result in a greener, safer and clean mode of communications.
The technology would result in fast modes of data transfer.
3.4 Weakness/risk of current plan and how they will be addressed
The weaknesses and plan for addressing the risks of present Li-Fi technology are:

3LI-FI TECHNOLOGY
Expensive nature – The Li-Fi technology is expensive in the market. Thus, specially designed LED
transmitters and Li-Fi products should be installed on network and user devices for facilitating communications.
Limitation of transmission area – The light signals produced by Li-Fi cannot pass through obstacles such
as concrete walls. The Li-Fi internet cannot function without a source of light. Hence, a Li-Fi transmitter should be
installed in every room where the devices would be installed.
4. Section 3 – Skills and Team Required
4.1 Skills needed
The skills needed by the people who would work for the development of Li-Fi technology should be based
on the use of communication technology, mesh technology, Zigbee and Bluetooth networks.
4.2 Team required to meet the skills/experience that is needed
A dedicated team should be hired who would have specialization in hardware aspects that would be used in
the technology. The team involved should have specialization in several areas of engineering such as Electronics and
Communication, Laser Technology and many others. The team should have a vast knowledge in the creation of ad-
hoc network that would be similar to Wi-Fi but would enable multiple users to access data from a single source. This
team should primarily conduct test experiments over the technology. Primarily, they should miniaturize the
experiment and limit it within laptops and smartphones. Various test should be conducted based on the usage of the
technology.
After the development of the primary step of the application, the tests should be conducted with some beta
users. These team should install the devices in few homes and thus gain feedbacks from them after they have used
the technology. The team should also design a smartphone application that would help in enabling the Li-Fi
connections and thus communicate and transfer data.
5. Conclusion
From the discussions in the report, it could be concluded that Li-Fi technology would prove to be beneficial
in communicating and transmission of data. The technology promises to solve various issues such as radio-
frequency bandwidth and also eliminate the disadvantages caused by technologies based on radio communication.
The deployment of Li-Fi technology would result in the migration of safer, cleaner and greener communication
networks. This discussion also emphasizes on the background of Li-Fi technology, competitive advantage, impactful
risks and the mitigation strategies. Hence, there is a possible certainty that the development of various applications
based on Li-Fi would be able to extend to several platforms and widely affect people in a positive manner.
