EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Conserving and sustaining environment are some of the greatest global concerns in recent
decades. Agencies such as the United Nations (UN) and the various environmental protection
agencies have considered environmental pollution, globalization and another natural
phenomenon such as emissions. Nitrogen oxide is a harmful emission released by car exhaust
which has been paid attention by (EPA) Environmental Protection Agency by tightening
emissions control. EPA has declared continuous strict restrictions of light-duty vehicles' standard
emissions which include sport utility vehicles, small pick-up trucks, and other automobiles. EPA
reported In September 2015that a number of Volkswagen ample vehicles sold globally had its
engine installed with software or its engine had been equipped with a defeat device that would
upgrade the expected outcomes and transform the performance of the vehicles.
INTRODUCTION
Ethics in the business environment is a reflection of analyzed moral behaviors that are involved
in an organizational activity and also in the society. It plays a big role by providing ways in
which unethical dilemma can be resolved and also facilitates the brand image and reputation of a
company through honesty, trust development, and issues of human dignity. In this case
Volkswagen Company has been involved in unethical practices of not meeting the regulations
that have been kept in place so as to reduce environmental pollution that is also hazardous to
human health (Rhodes, 2016).

Instead of conducting the emission tests on the road the Volkswagen pretended to hold its tests
for the vehicles that had TDI diesel engines in their laboratories that had been programmed to
detect cars emissions, record data from brakes, steering, and accelerators.
The laboratory systems had also been programmed with some settings that would completely
finish or rather lower the levels of nitrogen oxide that were being released by the Volkswagen
diesel cars. When the actual tests for the Volkswagen were done on the road they exceeded the
tests conducted in the Volkswagen laboratories emission tests by thirty-five (35) times. This
cheated result has on the emission scandal has led to dramatic reputations affecting a number of
Volkswagen top authorities. These unethical practices have led to significant reduction in
productivity of the company as discussed below.
ANALYSIS OF VOLKWAGEN UNETHICAL PRACTICES
Several Animated debates have been held in relation to Volkswagen emission and diesel tests
scandals to know the basic reasons that would have led to such unethical practices and also to
point out who influenced such decisions and why (Acker, 2017). The number of engineers,
technicians, and managers that took part in the emission test that led to this scandal In November
2015 was unbelievable. In fact, a number of Volkswagen levers were believed to participate in
such this scandal of operating the defeat device. It is indicated that only one person was required
to write the codes for the entire defeat device system but it required a big number of experienced
employees to put the defeat device program with elements and engines into practice. In addition
according to Winton (2016), Volkswagen junior staff were never involved in the laboratory
cheating tests, it was therefore declared that members of Volkswagen top management and
shareholders were the ones who implemented and caused the diesel emission scandals.
