INTRODUCTION
Management and operations are two important business tools that is concerned with
designing and controlling the process of production and redesigning the business operations by
meeting the requirements of the customers(Girma, 2019). The role of operation management is
concerned with planning, organising and supervising the activities in order to facilitate the
smooth operations of a business. Each of these requires an ability to determine the present
situation with an aim of improving the effectiveness and efficiency of operations. General
Electric is one of the leading company in USA that deals with various segments such as venture
capital, renewable energy, digital industry, aviation, finance, lighting and so on. This firm has
expanded its operations in parts of the country to gain large access to customers. This report is
based on various theories of leadership such as situational, system and contingency as each play
different roles and responsibilities according to a prevailing situation within the company. The
role of leader is to lead the whole team while the mangers have people who work together for the
accomplishment of common goal. This report also comprises of various business situations that
determine the role of management and qualities of leadership and the way they handle a complex
situation. Good leadership skills are necessary to understand the philosophies of handling the
complicated situation in a workplace.
1) Managerial skills and leadership qualities within the organisational context
Good management skills are very important for an organisation as it help in coordinating
the activities and also facilitate the smooth operation of a business(Leaders and et. al., 2019).
The role of leader is to provide proper guidance so as to bring improvement in the overall
functioning of an organisation. The qualities of leader and skills of management are crucial for
various positions and at a different levels of a company. One important aspect is that leadership
and management skills are used interchangeably as they perform different functions such as
planning, decision making, problem solving and proper time management. The top managers of
General Electric used the various business situations which are described below:
Situation 1
Adoption of changes: In a digital era, changes is very important for an organisation as
there are changes in the taste and preferences of customer's mind, changes in culture, technology

and so on in order to ensure success in an organisation(Rastegar and et. al., 2019). The manager
of General Electric through proper and strategic planning provide direction of action that aids in
completing the task in a proper time. The leader has to be calm and patient while facilitating the
change and also provide effective training to the subordinates as it help in increasing the skills
and knowledge base of an employees and also inculcate positive attitude and confidence in them.
The CEO of General Electric could scrutinize the activities and overall performance of
employees so as to facilitate the smooth operation of a business.
Jack Welch-
Jack Welch was best known all over the world for serving as the CEO of General Electric
(G.E.) from 1981 to 2001. He led to a revolution in the company and the way it conducted its
business. He made the company the fastest growing company in the United States of America.
Actions & Achievements-
He focused on innovation and ideas to make company get ahead of its various
competitors in the market. During his tenure as the CEO of the firm the revenues rose by up to
4000%. In 2006, his net worth was estimated at $720 millions. The reason why he was
successful that he believed in decentralisation of authority and gave complete freedom to take
decisions to the staff.
Managerial skills used in different situations-
Interpersonal conflicts- In a big company like G.E. interpersonal conflicts happen
between different members in various teams. Jack Welch being an able manager used to resolve
these conflicts by taking a balanced approach and outlook and by using managerial skill of
organizing.
Decrease in revenue growth- There were times when the company faced slowdown in
its revenue growth. In this situation, Jack Welch identified the root cause of decrease and
immediately took rectifying steps by using managerial skill of controlling to increase the
revenue.
Negative feedback- Sometimes negative feedback was received by the clients of G.E.
which affected the image of the company. In such a situation, Jack Welch used to effectively
communicate with the clients using managerial skill of controlling to solve their problems and
issues.
