INTRODUCTION
Operation management refers to the administration of business practices in order to
develop large level of efficiency in a possible manner within an organisation. It is always
concerned with converting material as well as labours into finish product and services. It helps
businesses towards attaining effective growth and profit of their business. On the other side,
management operations team generally attempt to balance cost with high revenue in order to
meet net operating profit in a perfect way (Bai and et. al., 2018). Main aim of management and
operation is to offer better quality of goods and services at market to achieve organisational
goals. Present assignment is based on John Lewis Partnership which is one of the best British
company was established in 1929 through John Spedean Lewis in London. This organisation
dealing with house wares, clothes, jewellery and many more. Further discussion will be based on
several role and functions of a manager and leader. After this, applying roles of manager and
leader to the given context. At last, role and functions appreciates played by manager or leader
and then understanding the relationship of manager and leader within contemporary business
environment.

Compare and define assorted roles as well as characteristics of a manager and a leader
Manager:
It is known as person who always have responsibility to manage ample group of people
in order to perform a particular task in an appropriate manner. Some of the people are always
available to answer of every question which is given by their manager while they perform task
effectively. In reference with John Lewis Partnership, manager plays significant role for
attainment of targeted goals and objectives (Borodin and et.al., 2016). There are few
characteristics and roles of manager within selected organisation, those are going to be discussed
below:
Role of a manager: Manager generally plays crucial role within an organisation by
performing large number of tasks into the firm. Along with manager should have quality to
implements on its predetermined vision into the small steps by following large number of stages
so that they can perform their task on time. On the other hand, role of a manager in firm always
influence other people so that they can learn so many things and able to work accordingly. Thus,

manage allotted several task to its employees in order to check their working performance with
the aim of attaining future goals perfectly.
Characteristics of a manager: In context of John Lewis Partnership, for betterment of
future, manager of this company should have good characteristics by which they can have direct
impact on people towards their work in a positive manner. There are few characteristics as
manager should have that are:
Delegation: It is essential for manager that they should always delegate among their roles
and responsibilities so that they can finish their work on time and achieve targeted goals in a
particular manner (Fügener, Schiffels and Kolisch, 2017).
Strong Communication: This is another characteristics which should be followed by
manager to run their business successfully in a particular way.
Leader:
It is an individual that have power to influence several people within the organisation and
achieve same goals or objectives properly. On the other side, as it is a person into firm who
commonly motivates another employees towards work so that they can fulfil firm's needs and
wants by achieving fixed goals. In regards with John Lewis Partnership, leaders plays essential
role for achieving targeted and predetermined goals. Some of the characteristics and roles of
leader have been mentioned below:
Role of a leader: It is an individual who has capability to perform every task that plays
effective role into the organisation for achieving successful goals on time. There are few roles
which should be followed by a leader within respected organisation, that are:
Encouragement: Within the organisation employees always wants high motivation for
performing every task and achieve better outcomes. Herein, leader plays good role by motivating
their employees so that they can work better and accomplish desired goals in a short period of
time. On the other side, a great workforce always motivated by a leader in a perfect way
(Gellings and Parmenter, 2016).
Setting vision and mission: In this aspect leader has responsibility of respective
organisation to understand their employee's need and wants for giving better performance as per
targeted mission and vision so that they can get best outcomes effectively.
