Executive Summery
The aim of this report is to analyze the organizational culture and role of leadership in high
performance organizations. Downsizing has caused individuals to work longer hours which
can become a cause of frustration and employee turnover. In different companies, leaders
employ different methods so that they are able to motivate their employees and inspire in
them a sense of organizational citizenship behavior. Effective leadership can ensure that
employees have job satisfaction and greater commitment to work.

Case study
1. Why do employees at firms such as Apple work so hard and put in such
long hours?
The main reason for which employees at companies like Apple are forced to work
long hours is downsizing. In most cases, companies downsize their employees for
various reasons. Many companies downsize due to their poor economic condition. In
some cases they lay off employees so that maintain profitability by lowering their
operational cost (Chan, Pun and Selden 2016). It could also be a result of merging
with another company. In case of Apple, the downsizing happened due to the need of
maintaining profitability. The telecommunication industry is now largely led by
android technology and only a very small percentage of the world consumers, mainly
the high income group, are interested in the Apple phones. Thus, due to this shift of
trend in the market, Apple has to make necessary changes so that they are able to keep
the research and development running as well as maintain their profitability (Miller
2013).
Companies like Apple are high performance organization where the employees are
appraised according to their performance and innovation capability. Thus, the retained
employees have to work hard to ensure that their employment id continued even if
there is further downsizing. One of the most effective way that the company is being
able to employ the workers for so long hours are making the working from home
option available (Warrick 2017). Many large firms are following this path and are
providing the employees with laptops, mobiles, fax machines so that they can do their
work from home thus maintaining the work-life balance as well as putting long hours.
