INTRODUCTION
Building organisational capabilities and culture is an important for ensuring long term
survival and perpetual success of the business firm. Emotional Intelligence of leaders plays a key
role in creating suitable organisational for the company. It is important for business firms to
evaluate strengths, weaknesses and outcome of improvement in capabilities in order to identify
areas of further improvement which would contribute to the mid-term and long term success.
The business firm selected for the present report is the multinational e-commerce company
Amazon. The company was founded in the year 19994 and is currently headquartered in Seattle,
Washington, USA. In addition to e-commerce, Amazon also provides goods and services related
to cloud computing, artificial intelligence, consumer electronics, digital streaming, self-driving
cars and internet of things. The wide range of products and services offered by the company has
contributed to the rapid progress of the firm on a global scale. Amazon has the largest global
brand valuation for the year 2020 and the largest online marketplace. In addition to this the
company is the largest provider of Artificial Assistant provider, live streaming platforms and
cloud computing platforms in terms of revenue. The whole foods market acquisition helped the
company enter physical retail along with online retail and now the company is one of the largest
brands in the world. The online marketplace of Amazon is worldwide and the workforce of the
firm equals to 1,298,000 workers recruited across the globe. The UK sales of the company for
the year 2020 were £19.4 billion which were an increase of 51% compared to sales in the
previous year. The annual revenue of Amazon in the year 2020 increased by 38% to reach £272
billion (Amazon’s Net Profit Soars 84% With Sales Hitting $386 Billion, 202). The net income of
the company also increased in the year 2020 from previous year to reach £15.07 billion which
was £8.1 billion in the year 2019. In addition to this, the earnings per share of Amazon also
increased in the year 2020 from 2019. The total earnings per share of the company in the year
2019 amounted to £16.27 which increased in the year 2020 and totalled to £29.57. In context of
the United Kingdom the consumer spending for the year 2020 equalled to £19.5 billion. This is
double in comparison to the consumer spending of Marks and Spencer which is a 137 year old
retailor in the United Kingdom (Amazon reports UK sales rose by 51% in 2020, 2021). This
depicts the increasing influence of Amazon over consumers in foreign markets and ability to
compete with well-established domestic brands. The positive financial aspects of the company
showcase the growth and stability of the firm on a global scale. In addition to this prosperous

financial status of the company also provides view of long surviving future for the company with
rapid growth in various sectors and success in every entrepreneurial venture. Amazon is also
aiming to venture into spaceflight industry with the new venture Blue Origins (Rikap, 2020). The
continuous success gained by Amazon since it’s inception showcases that the company will gain
success in this entrepreneurial venture. The strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of
the American business firm Amazon are provided below:
The primary strength of Amazon is diversified product portfolio offered by the company
which ranges from online retail services to digital streaming platforms. This increases the income
sources of the firm and contributes to the success of the company. In addition to this high brand
recognition in foreign as well as domestic markets enables the company to become a leading
member in foreign regions quickly. The main weakness of Amazon is that the business model of
the company can be imitated by other business firms. This weakness of the company has given
rise to regional competition which negatively affects the market share of the company. In
addition to this, the company has faced various controversies related to tax avoidance. This
affects the brand image of the company. Amazon has various opportunities which include
expansion in physical stores of the company (Vlahos, 2019). The primary threat faced by the
technology conglomerate is raising competition in online retail industry at global and regional
scale. This affects the profitability of the company negatively. In addition to this the company
faces threat from the reducing disposable income and economic downturn. This affects the
profitability and growth potential of the company (Colby and Dennett, 2017).
In order gain success in future business endeavours the two main capabilities which need
to be improved by Amazon are teamwork, conflict management and negotiations. The area of
teamwork requires improvement because in order to manage a global workforce and protect the
enterprise against aggressive competition from regional and international business firms, the
company needs to invest in teamwork. Teamwork will help the company build a highly
coordinated workforce all across the globe to face the challenge of increasing competition. In
addition to this the company will be able to gain success in various business ventures with the
help of teamwork. The second area of improvement is conflict management and negotiations.
Being one of the largest corporations in the world, Amazon has faced various controversies and
conflicts with their workforce. These types of cases have affected the brand image of the firm
and delay various business activities conducted at the company. In addition to this workplace
