INTRODUCTION
Management refers to the art of getting work done from others. Leadership is an important skill
used by the managers to increase their influence on employee’s behaviour (Daddi, Iraldo and
Testa, 2015). This project report aims at understanding the role of managers and leaders in
different organisational context and applying some of the theories of leadership to understand the
process better. The company considered for this report is Tesco plc ltd, which is a large grocery
and retail supermarket chain across UK and many other countries all over the world. This project
report has the objective of evaluating different approaches of operational management along with
the managers role and determining the importance of operational management in achievement of
organisational objectives. At last, this report aims at understanding the influence of
environmental factor in the operational decision-making by the managers of an organisation.
TASK 2
P2 Examination of role of a leader and function of a manager in different situational contexts.
A leader and a manager are considered as the backbone of an organisation and have an
important role to play in every organisational function and situation. The effectiveness of an
organisation’s operation largely depends on the effectiveness of management and leadership. In
the context of Tesco Plc Ltd, the role of leader and manager in various situations is as described
below:
Planning: Planning is a process which involves setting organisational targets and the tasks
required to achieve those targets effectively and efficiently. Management of the Tesco plc ltd.
has a major part in the planning process of the company (Dennis, 2016). It is the role of the
management to develop plans for the company which help in achieving long-term as well as
short-term objectives by optimum use of the resources of the organisation. In this phase, the
prime responsibility of the leader is to bring out the best performance in the employees by
motivating them to make the planning realistic and successful.
Organising: Organising is the another important function of the management. The managers
at Tesco plc ltd. are responsible for organising the resources and the raw materials in a way
which avoids wastage and ensures time-effectiveness. Effective organising is concerned with the
principle of right material at the right place at the right time.
