Introduction
Career development refers to the process of evaluation and analysis of personal interests
and skills in order to make decisions regarding the choices of pursuing a career. In this career
research report, I am reflecting upon the information which is required in order to ensure
effective career development and enhancement. The following report focus upon the career of
management and it discuss in detail this field of career development. The profession of manager
is a very reputed profession and is respected and valued by everyone in an organisation.
Therefore, I am choosing this field for the purpose of my career development and I believe
pursuing a profession as manager would help in enhancing my potential and overall personality
development. I am keenly interested in this the job of a manager and wants to multiply my skills
in the area of management as I always wanted to manage people. In this report, the trends
regarding the profession of management are discussed in context of both primary and secondary
research. It also pays emphasis upon skills and knowledge required for the profession of a
manager and critically evaluate this job role.

General trends impacting upon management profession (secondary research)
General trends influencing the field of management refers to the modern and emerging
managerial practices which are used by managers in order to efficiently manage employees and
improve their performance (Ireland and Lent, 2018). There are various important trends that are
emerging in the profession of management. The four most important trends emerging are
discussed below:
Crisis management: Crises can be both internal and external and has became a part of an
organisation as it operates in a dynamic environment where uncertainties prevail. An
organisation requires highly competent managers in order to ascertain the extent of uncertainties
and develop contingency plans. The changes in external environment is uncertain and cannot be
predicted with accuracy but managers must be able to ascertain uncertainties and effectively
make contingency plans. Organisations seeks and prefers candidates who have expertise in
predicting changes through analysis market trends and situations prevailing in the external
environment that are likely to influence internal factors of a company.

Information technology and artificial intelligence: The another important trend in the
profession of management is having expertise in the technical field in so that he can perform data
analysis and manage other functions efficiently. The growing scope of technical advancements
have made it a highly required skill and it is crucial for managers as they have to oversee a range
of functions involving modern software and advanced techniques. Organisations have developed
high tech specified software for the purpose of effective management. Therefore, it has became a
important trend for individuals pursuing the course of management to have high expertise in
information technology (Levin, Martin and Damián, 2020).
Globalization: In this era, business has redefined the ways in which it operates and the
growing interaction and collaboration among various countries have emerged it as a significant
trend in the profession of management. The main function of management is to getting things
done through his subordinates by maintaining an influential and persuasive personality. This
function of managers requires high communication and interpersonal skills in order to deal with
a range of individuals belonging to different geographical territories. To manage a range of
activities of organisational operations, the manager has to communicate with outsourcing
corporations and outsider directors as the course of managing an organisation has expanded its
magnitude which is not limited to any geographical territory (Horton and et.al., 2020).
Organisations are tend to hire those candidates for the job role of manager who is highly
influential and can manage operations with outsiders in order to facilitate exchange of services,
ideas and technology etc.
Promoting workplace diversity: Another emerging trend due to globalization is the scope
and importance of promoting workplace diversity. As companies are growing and expanding
extending their operations to international borders and thus it employs people from a range of
diversities having differences in educational and personal backgrounds, following different
customs and traditions and having huge differences in values, beliefs as well as conventions.
Therefore companies demand managers who must be able to handle and manage employees of
all diversities and should ensure fair and justified treatment to all. It has become highly crucial
for managers to maintain an affirmative attitude and he must be able to understand viewpoints
and opinions of his subordinates. It has became a essential trend in the profession of
management as managers must promote and provide everyone with equal opportunities and

perceive individuals on the basis of their talents and potential rather than judging them on
grounds of their caste, race and creed.
General trends impacting upon management profession (primary research)
The primary research is conducted through performing interviews in order to obtain first
hand information from individuals who are practising this profession. They are experienced and
can provide with relevant information on how to develop and enhance skills in this profession
and what are the challenges prevailing in this job role. From the course of primary research, it is
being examined that general trends that are most affecting the profession of management is
globalization and crisis management. Managers are responsible for overseeing and monitoring
most important functions and thus they have to deal with many stakeholders of the company
(Witt and et.al., 2019). Managers have to communicate with major stakeholders including
investors, outsourcing service providers, creditors, suppliers and consumers etc. thus, managers
must be able to maintain better interpersonal relations with these stakeholders belonging from
different geographical territories. Beside this, managers must be able to ascertain changes and
develop highly constructive contingency plans in order to effectively respond to changes for the
purpose of reducing risk factors associated with uncertainties.
The skills, knowledge and experience required
The evaluation of skills as well as knowledge and expertise required is crucial so that an
individual must know the areas of focus for the purpose of potential career enhancement. There
are various personal skills required for the profession of manager as well as requirement of
certain areas of knowledge and experience.
Key skills required
Delegation and organisation skills: The main function of a manager is to getting work
done through guiding and instructing fellow employees. One of the major skill that is required by
managers is how to effectively organise work procedures and divide as well as delegated it
among subordinates according to their capabilities (Havermans and et.al., 2019).
Strong communication skills: effective and strong communication is a skill which is
required in every job role but as a manager it is critically important to possess effective
communication skills. As the role of manager is to inspire and motivate other employees and
without having effective communication skills, a manager won't be able to influence and

persuade other employees. While conducting interviews, HR department highly emphasize upon
and pay attention on how effectively a candidate can express his opinions and ideas.
Strategic planning and forward thinking: As discussed above, in recent years the job of
managers have diversified and he is to oversee and develop a range of contingency plans to
mitigate risks. Therefore, it is important for a mangers to think forward and ascertain the future
consequences of an action so that effective plans can be developed as precautionary measures.
Mentoring skills: It is important for managers to maintain a leading attitude and a
influential personality so that he could be able to guide his fellow employees. A manager must
be commanding and able to establish his dominance so that subordinates must obey them.
Problem solving and decision-making skills: A manager has to take decisions on every
step and he must be able to carefully think and decide the course of action that is need to be
taken. It is a crucial task of a manager to take fast decisions and lack of clarity and confusion
must be avoided (Goupil De Bouillé, 2021). Moreover, a manger must be able to handle
grievances of employees and provide them with constructive solutions as well as must be able to
resolve their conflicts.
Area of knowledge and experience
Conceptual and theoretical knowledge: For the purpose of pursuing the profession of
management and apply for the role of manager, individuals must have subject knowledge and
must have degree and diploma in the field of business management. Apart from possessing the
above stated personal skills, an individual is required to have in-depth knowledge on all subjects
and theories of management.
IT and technical expertise: It is highly expected and demanded from a individual
pursuing career in filed of management to have high experience and expertise in information
technology. He must be able to operate computers and modern software effectively (Nielsen,
Henriksen and Børgesen, 2018).
Evaluation
From the above report, it has been evaluated that the profession of manager is a suitable
field of career for me as the act of managing people is something that I am very passionate
about. I believe that I am competent and have the potential to comply with and deal general
emerging and important trends that are required in this profession. Moreover, I think that I
possess all the relevant skills and I am keenly interested in further developing and enhancing the

skills needed for being a qualified and competent manager. I have completed my degree and
diploma in business management which makes me a suitable candidate in terms of conceptual
knowledge. Moreover, I also possess relevant IT skills and I am able to operate computers and
have knowledge regarding modern software.
