Chapter 1: Introduction of the Research
Overview of the Research
The project mainly aims to determine the impact of cultural differences over the
performance of the business. However, cultural differences are recognised as the most imperative
area of study which is widely considered to enhance individual knowledge and skills. Cultural is
defined as the set of values, beliefs, rules and institutions that are held through a specific group
of people (Gurung and Prater, 2017). Therefore, in the business world, culture is always treated
as in imperative aspect of success. Culture can be both a positive and negative impact over the
operations of the business and many businesses are struggling in the new and foreign
environment. Culture differences can affect the business in assorted manner like language issues,
pricing issues and the culture collisions are not uncommon mainly at the initial stages. Therefore,
it is important for the businesses to handle the issues in a manner in fulfilling the other part of the
business. Mistakes can be difficult to resolve but disrespect of the foreign culture can be
destroying the entire operations of the business. Whereas, culture differences also create positive
impact for the businesses in enhancing the talent pool and strength the workforce to improvise
the operations of the business. The project contains the study about the impact that are cause due
to cultural differences at workplace (Bauer, Matzler and Wolf, 2016). For better understanding of
the subject, a study is being executed over the analysis of Air Malta, as it is a large carrier airline
company in Malta. However, the company is operating within Europe, Middle East and the
North Africa and dealing with diversity at workplace, thus this also create issue in execution of
business operations. Culture differences creates major issue is communication and affects the
entire operations in adverse manner. In the modern business era, organisations are working for
attaining higher growth and success and for this, businesses are widely concern over managing
the culture and establishing effective international among the employees to execute operations of
the business effectively. Air Malta is operating at wider level and the business is facing the issue
related with different culture as Malta is a South European Island where people prefer to speak
some specific language like Maltese and English as they do not prefer to speak in other language

and this create issue for the business in managing employees from the different culture and
language, thus this affects the growth of the business.
Background of the Research
In the global business era, communication is recognised as an imperative aspect for the
successful execution of daily business operations. Therefore, understanding cultural differences
and addressing the language issues are some of the considerations an individual need to have
when dealing with people from different culture, beliefs, norms, languages and so on. Businesses
in the modern era are often lost with the direction to gain progression due to less involvement of
people with each other from different culture (Frijns, Dodd and Cimerova, 2016).
People's norms, convictions, informal principles, and patterns of behaviour may all be
considered part of their culture. Cultural barriers can manifest themselves in a variety of ways,
depending on the organization's scale, place, and custom culture. These cultural barriers may also
arise as a result of organisational workers' attitudes. This study aims to explore the impact of
cultural differences on foreign organisations' business success, as well as the role of cultural
managing diversity and its implications for the workplace. (Bi and Lehto, 2018). Since Air
Malta Plc is Malta's flag carrier airline, the company's headquarters are in Luqa, with its hub at
Malta International Airport. The corporation was founded in 1973, and David Curmi is the
chairman of the board of directors. The corporation provides facilities in a variety of countries,
including Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Air Malta embarked on a fleet renewal
campaign between 2002 and 2007, opting to replace all of its aircraft with Airbus A319s and
A320s. With the other IATA airlines, Air Malta had about 190 interline ticketing agreements. In
the fiscal year 2018, the corporation made a profit of about €1.2 million. The company is
working with the immense number of employees who are belongs from the different culture. The
company Air Malta is mainly work for the motive of increasing the overall business performance
via managing the culture of the business at workplace as the company is operating with diverse
employees as it has its operating within different countries and the diversity creates both positive
and negative impact over the operations and progression of the business. Due to diversity at
workplace, Air Malta is mainly facing the issue of language differences and this has direct
negative impact over the progression of the business.

Rationale of Research
The project into consideration is based on evaluating the potential influence of cultural
differences over the performance of the business. Therefore, this is a wide area of academic
writing which is imperative in creating value for the individual in enhancing personal as well as
professional skills and ability in relation to understanding the cultural differences and the issues
that has affected the operations of the business. The potential intention of executing this study
that, cultural differences is a major issue which is widely faces by the businesses. However, in
the era of globalisation businesses are seeking for moving towards overseas for the intention to
enhancing the operations and progression and for exploring international businesses are facing
the issue of cultural diversity which has widely impact over the progression of the business. The
study is imperative in providing in-depth idea about the issue of cultural differences and its
influence over the performance of the business. The another motive behind selecting this topic is
the personal interest of the researcher as the investigator wants to explore own idea and
knowledge in relation to the similar subject and gain effective academic records.
