A Reflective Essay about Effective Communication & Improving Performance,
& how this influenced my Performance, behaviour & experience
This piece of reflective writing utilises Driscoll’s model of reflection (1994). Here I will
discuss my experiences at work/in education (WHICH OF THESE TWO DO YOU
WRITE ABOUT? WORK, OR EDUCATION?) where I demonstrate effective
communication, and the process that enabled me to improve my performance, in the
table below:
Part A
1. What? 350 words
A description of the situation or event
Description of a situation or event which
enabled you to improve performance because
of effective communication
What is/was the Purpose?
That a regular meeting with my colleagues, where
we were discussed different things. The main
purpose of that meeting is to share knowledge with
each other. I and my six colleagues was involved
in that conversation. That was really great
conversation or meeting to me, because I have
learnt many new things through that.
What happened in the
event/scenario?
In that meeting me and my six colleagues started
to discuss various things which was based on our
daily life or events. Each one was putted their
opinion on different topic. Before starting
conversation in that meeting, we all members of
that meeting already decided that we only discuss
those topics which help us in improving our
performance at any place.
What did I see/do during the
event?
I have seen in that meeting that each one sharing
their different ideas on improve things in daily life.
But after few minutes of conversation, I have
realized that all members was given priority to
speak without listen other one. Then decided, I
give equal priority to speaking and listening,
because I have learnt somewhere that, each
person need give equal priority to speaking and
listening, because this step makes conversation
more effective.
What was my reaction to it?
On that conversation, all my colleagues was giving
their opinion on different things continuously, so I
decided that, I only start to give my opinion on that
condition when all get stopped to speck. Then I
started to listen all of them carefully. That was my
reaction on that conversation. Then after few
minutes of conversation, my one colleague told

me, why are you not giving your opinion in this
conversation. Then all my colleagues was started
to request me to share my opinion in conversation.
What did other people do that
were involved in this?
My colleagues were started to force me for
knowing my opinions on different topics. On that
time, my one colleague who is able maintain
politeness in each conversation was told me; why
are you not sharing your opinion. Then my other
colleagues was also agreed with that one.
How did they react or what
did they do as a result of it?
They were looking at me for knowing my answer
on the last question. Then I said, you all are
continuously speaking without listening others, so
according to my knowledge of communication
skills, I don't think this is right thing. Then all
colleagues said to me that, yes you are right. Then
one of them told me that you have great
communication skills.
2. So What? 350 words Analyse the Event
How did I feel at the time of
the event?
I felt excellent on that conversation, because all
people were stared talking about my
communication skills. My all colleagues said, you
have very effective communication skills, and we
will also try to improve our communication skills.
Reason is, they all have habit to first speak and
then listen. Then I told all of them that each person
should make balance between speaking and
lightening. I felt wonderful, because all colleagues
was carefully listened me.
Were those feelings I had any
different from other people
who were involved at the
time?
Yes! I have some communication skills, so mine
that thing differs me from my colleagues. My all
colleagues are only give higher priority to speak
and then lower priority to listen. But in my case, I
give equal priority to both listening and speaking.
That's why this thing differs me from others.
Are my feelings now, after the
event, any different from what
I experienced at the time?
I felt very excellent in that meeting, because all my
colleagues were appreciated me for my effective
communication skills. That feeling is still positively
contributing in my daily life. That was really great
experience for me, so I never change my feeling
on that experience.
Do I still feel troubled, if so, in
what way?
No, I never feel highly troubled, because on that
event or conversation. I was no does such things
which negatively influence me and my
communication skills. But one thing that trouble
