Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is basically the teaching
of the language English to people who do not have English as their first language especially
in a country where the English language is dominant. There are about 6500 languages that are
spoken in the world however English has become a dominant and is becoming a global
language in the world (Besacier et al. 2014). English language has been dominating various
fields including education, communication and international commerce (Xue and Zuo 2013).
Asia has been following this global trend and many countries in Asia have included the
English language in the curriculum of the schools thinking that this may help in contributing
to the personal, social, cultural and linguistic development of the students in the country.
However with the popularity of the language it is important to motivate the people in Asia to
learn English for the betterment of their future.
According to scholars, English has become important for communication with not
only people who speak English but also with people belonging from other foreign countries
because of the commonalty (Ahmad 2016). English in recent years has become a business
language and has become a necessity in the global workforce. Big corporate have made
English their official language which has led to people learning English. In the age of
digitalization, the internet mostly uses the English language. This has made the language
important in order to help people socialize and grow their skills of communication.
TESOL has come up with different initiatives like translanguaging, online teaching,
global Englishes, teaching through social media and advocacy in order to educate and help
people learn English worldwide (TESOL Blog 2019). Along with this, there are various
courses like the online teaching and the teaching through social media, which has gained
popularity (Jaggars 2014).
