INTRODUCTION
In today's competitive world, the organisational complexities are increasing and that's
why the pressure on employees is also increasing (Schunk and DiBenedetto, 2020). Due to this,
companies need to motivate their employees so that they can give their best in order to achieve
organisational objectives. In this context, Jack stores is undertaking which are the new discount
stores opened by TESCO so that they can give a tough competition to Aldi and Lidl. This report
will be discussing two motivational theories which is necessary for an organisation in order to
motivate their employees.
MAIN BODY
Motivational theories
Business environment is becoming dynamic which increases uncertainties for company.
This can be seen in TESCO as they are facing a tough competition from Lidl and Aldi and
because of that they are opening new discount stores i.e. Jack stores. They found that
uncertainties creates problem for an organisation such as decreases employees' productivity due
to pressurize. For that purpose, it is crucial for Jack store that they should motivate their
employees. This will assists in increasing employees' productivity as well as job satisfaction and
loyalty (Rheinberg and Engeser, 2018). In order to motivate employees, company should apply
motivational theories that are explained below:
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
It is one of the best motivational theories which should be apply in the organisation so
that an organisation is able to motivate and encourage employees towards organisational
objectives. Motivation is crucial for increasing productivity, job satisfaction, loyalty, high
commitment, tend to less sick and absent (Anderman, 2020). This is crucial for an organisation
that they need to identify the needs of employees and try to meet them in order to achieve
organisational objectives. This theory contains 5 important stages which are mentioned below:
Physiological needs
Physiological needs are leading to the basic needs which are important to meet for
employees. It is concerned with very basic needs such as food, shelter, clothes, etc. Every
organisation needs to provide basic salary to the employees so that they will be able to meet their

basic needs. It motivates employees for organisational goals and objectives by satisfying their
needs and wants.
Safety needs
This needs is raised after satisfaction of physiological needs. It is crucial for an
organisation that they should focus on providing safety needs as every employees safety and
security for their job so that they will not facing any problem related to money (Dohlman and
et.al., 2019). Safety and security can be provided by Jack stores with the help of promise to the
employees that they will not fire their employees without any cause. In addition to this, Jack
stores are providing insurance to the employees so that they feel motivated towards
organisational objectives.
Social needs
It is related to belongingness needs which required in organisation for the purpose of
releasing employees from pressure. In order to meet this need, Jack stores should provide
informal meetings and sessions which assists employees to talk with each other so that they will
be able to satisfy their belongingness needs.
Esteem needs
Esteem needs are concerned with prestige of employees which they require after
sometime. It is very important for an organisation that they should provide rewards and
recognition to employees so that they feel important for organisational success. These needs can

be satisfied only when people get enough experienced. It is crucial for an organisation to satisfy
their esteem needs in order to meet their goals and objectives.
Self actualisation needs
This kind of need is not possible in practical life as people wants to be become best that
no one other can compete them. They require the highest position and also want to become the
example in front of other people. It is quite difficult for organisation as employees are becoming
more thirsty and that's why it become difficult to satisfy.
These are some important needs which depends on employees' position and state. It is
necessary for Jack stores that they should try to satisfy these kinds of needs so that they will
achieve their organisational goals and objectives. With the assistance of satisfying these needs,
an organisation is also achieving their goals as they motivate their employees that helps them to
increase their productivity.
Two-Factor Theory
It is also known as dual factors and Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory. According to
this theory, it is necessary for an organisation that they should provide some motivation to the
employees so that they are able to do their best in organisation (Alshmemri, Shahwan-Akl and
Maude, 2017). This theory states that there are some factors which create job satisfaction and
some of them are creating job dissatisfaction. It is crucial for an organisation to increase those
factors which create job satisfaction as it will assists in motivating employees towards
organisational objective. In this theory there are two factors which are explained below:
Hygiene factors
These are the factors which are not increasing motivation but if they are not present in the
organisation so employees are not able to do their work. Employees will feel unmotivated if
these factors are not including in the organisation. It includes company policy, salary,

supervision, working conditions, supervision, relationships with employees, etc. These factors
should be provided by Jack stores so that they are able to reduce unmotivated people.
Motivators
These are the factors which encourages and motivated employees in the organisation. It is
crucial for an organisation that they should include these factors such as recognition,
achievement, increased responsibility, advancement and growth, recognition, etc. It is necessary
for an organisation that they should focus on providing rewards and recognition to the deserving
employees according to their work performance. These will increase their productivity as they
are feeling motivated.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded from the above discussion that it is necessary for an organisation that
they should motivate their employees. This can be done with the use of motivational theories
such as Hertzberg two factor theory, Maslow's hierarchy needs, etc. These are important theories
which assists an organisation to motivate their employees that results in achieving their goals and
objectives.
