Multicultural Feminism: Understanding the Cross-Cultural Experiences of Women

This article reviews the importance of multicultural feminism in understanding the cross-cultural experiences of women and how it differs from mainstream feminism. It highlights the need to take into account the experiences of women from cross-cultural perspectives to understand the variance in the global experience of women.

The feminist perspectives in the society have greatly changed in recent years. The
feminist practices in American subcontinent focus on bringing equality among men and women
in the society. Contrary to the belief, feminist view in the western society fail to take into
account socio-cultural and ethnic differences which has become a major problem. The multi-
cultural feminism takes into account the voices of the marginalized feminists from fringes. They
belong to African America native American and Asian Americans. In other words, they represent
the ethnic minority in the feminist perspectives pointing out that they face other major issues in
the society that the contemporary feminism fails to point out. The division of the multicultural
perspectives solely based on the African and American division is futile as the Asian Americans
and Latin Americans make a major populations. The other feminist groups have their own
genuine problems in the society. The problems faced by the different races are different, making
their feminist views and ideologies also different. This is the contention to be heard in assessing
and understanding the multicultural feminism in the society. The article points out that the
mainstream feminism fails to take into account the issues that the women generally face in the
other racial groups. It also goes on to show that race and culture have an important role to play in
the problems faced and have to be mitigated accordingly. The differentiation of the women of
colour into a single group affects the understanding of their problems in the society. The
proponents of the multicultural feminism hold an opinion that the generalization of the views of
women in the contemporary feminism is not right.
It can be argued that views of multicultural feminists are right because the
experience of womanhood and patriarchy may vary with culture and ethnicity. The experience of
women are not global and hence cannot be generalized. It is not that every woman wants to fight
for equal pay. The fight for equality may exist on different topics among various racial and

ethnic groups. These varied experiences and socio-cultural experiences of women have to be
taken into consideration to make a culturally rich environment of feminist discourse.
The multicultural feminism takes into account the cross-cultural aspects of the society
and the experience. It is cross-sectional approach which takes into account the various aspects of
society. The racial and ethnic group have different experiences in different social environments.
People of the same race may have different experiences depending on the social environment.
The power and the domination structure are inherently same but vary based on the culture and
ethnicity. This is what multicultural feminism takes into account along with the experiences of
women in cultural environments. Multicultural feminism in this articles highlight how important
it is to understand the experiences of women from cross-cultural perspectives to understand the
variance in the global experience of women. It can be therefore said that the multicultural
feminism is a counter to the generalized idea of feminism which takes into account the problems
that the women face globally, however diverse they may be according to ethnicity and culture.
