Guidelines for Critical Analysis of an Article
You completed your article summaries in Module 3. The next step is to complete a critical analysis
of each article. For each article, ask yourself these questions when completing this section of your
Information Retrieval Paper.
What were the strengths of the research? Were a significant number of participants
studied in an appropriate setting that can be applied in a broader sense?
What were the limitations of the research? Was the environment controlled?
What did the author leave out?
Were barriers identified and addressed?
Could the findings be implemented with purpose and expected outcomes?
Article 1
In the space below, post the reference for the first article in correct APA format. If you made errors
in formatting your reference for this article in Module 3, now is the time to make the appropriate
changes so you do not make the same formatting error over and over.
Murni, I. K., Duke, T., Kinney, S., Daley, A. J., & Soenarto, Y. (2015). Reducing hospital-acquired
infections and improving the rational use of antibiotics in a developing country: an effectiveness
study. Archives of disease in childhood, 100(5), 454-459.
In the space below, write a one-paragraph critique of your first research article. Apply correct APA
format and scholarly writing style as you critique the article’s strengths and limitations related to
your stated research question.
One of the strengths of the article is the choice of the setting of the study, whereby the
hospital serves a large population of about 2.4 million. The hospital's ward provides services to both
infectious and non-infectious diseases. Besides, the study used a large sample size of 1020 patients
for each period. The third possible strength of the article is the study design which consisted of
three periods of the prospective before and after the research. The chosen 12 months period between
pre-intervention baseline, the intervention, and the post-intervention was sufficient for the outcome
of the study as it reduces any impact of seasonal disparity of HAIs (Brocket & Shaban, 2015). Also,

the evaluation of the participants was effective as the clients who were listed during the three
months of intervention were involved in the post-intervention analysis.
Some of the limitations of the article are the choice of study settings which was restricted to
one location or region. The study was restricted to only Dr. Sardjito Hospital in Indonesia, which
can affect the outcome of the results as the findings cannot be generalized to the whole population
of India. The other limitation of the study article is the omission of data analysis that could address
the ascertainment bias of before and after the study. The authors of the article have identified
possible bias and addressed some using various data analysis and techniques. For example, the
authors have addressed possible bias were similar characteristics of participants were expected to
have similar intrinsic infection risks in both pre preintervention and postintervention periods. Also,
the findings of the research article could be implemented with the use of WHO antibiotic guidelines
and with the utilization of wider strategies to reduce the transmission of microbes and HAIs
antibiotic resistance.
Article 2
In the space below, post the reference for the second article in correct APA format. . If you made
errors in formatting your reference for this article in Module 3, now is the time to make the
appropriate changes so you do not make the same formatting error over and over.
Ramasethu, J. (2017). Prevention and treatment of neonatal nosocomial infections. Maternal health,
neonatology and perinatology, 3(1), 5.
In the space below, write a one-paragraph critique of your second research article. Apply correct
APA format and scholarly writing style as you critique the article’s strengths and limitations related
to your stated research question.
The strength of the article is that it has provided much literature review that backs can be
used to back up the findings of the study (Ramasethu, 2017). Besides its use of several literature
reviews, the article has various limitations. One of the limitations of the article is the failure to
