1. The majority of older Australian’s continue to live in their own homes, with or without
support. Discuss two advantages and 2 challenges of older people remaining in their own

Caring for the elderly may be challenging, particularly, making a decision on whether to
keep the elderly at their own homes or Nursing homes is never an easy affair for family
members. Keeping the elderly in their own homes comes with both advantages and
challenges.
To start with, Cost-effectiveness is one of the most crucial advantages of in-home care for
the elderly. Unlike nursing homes, which are relatively expensive, caring for the elderly
from within their homes is cheaper (Ropchan, 2019).
Secondly, Living at home saves the elderly from other infections. Although most
institutions have put in place measures to control the spread of infections, it is almost
impossible to achieve this objective in crowded and confined places such as nursing
homes. Caring for the elderly from within their homes is advantageous in that it prevents
them from acquiring infections such as gastroenteritis, flues and colds. The home therefore
provides a safe environment for the elderly especially those with weak immune systems
(Ropchan, 2019).

On the other hand, keeping the elderly at home may come with various challenges. Most
importantly is the caregiver deficiency. In-home environment, there may be a single
caregiver unlike in nursing homes. Therefore, deficiencies in single staff member may
primarily affect home care(Assistedlivingtoday,2019).
Finally keeping the elderly at home is also affected by the lack of resources during
emergencies. The home environment does not have therapeutic options and resources
available in nursing homes (Assistedlivingtoday,2019).

My aged care offers government-funded services for the elderly within the Australian
population. For eligible individuals to get assessed through my aged care they have to

follow a simple process to get the care that they need (Myagedcare,2019).
The first step to be taken by an older person is getting to know about the types of services
offered through my aged care. By checking the type of services offered, they will then
decide if the services provided meet their requirements and expectations
(Myagedcare,2019).
After learning about the different types of care services offered by My Aged Care, an
elderly person may then apply for an assessment. The first step in the assessment process is
making a call to My Aged Care. Through this call, the staff will check the older person is
eligible and establish if there is a need for physical assessment. In the event that a face to
face assessment becomes a necessity, it will be done at the home of the aged person
(Myagedcare,2019).
Depending on the information given out during the call, two types of assessments may be
recommended. In this regard, if it is established that the older person needs low-level
support, a home support assessment with a Regional Assessor may be recommended.
Similarly, if it is established that the older person has more significant needs than what is
offered by the home support program, a comprehensive assessment by Aged Care
Assessment Team (ACAT) may be chosen (Myagedcare,2019).

Japara home care is an example of Australian Organizations that offer support and
protection to older people in Australia. The organization offers comprehensive residential
care to individuals no longer able to live independently. The organization informs the
support and protection of older people in Australia in multiple ways (Japara,2019).
To start with, Japara offers excellent accommodation supported by innovative and
personalized care plans, designed to meet unique individual needs. Additionally, the
organization has specialized healthcare professionals and trained nurses committed to meet
the needs of the elderly within the organization. The organization also offers its clients
various lifestyle and nutrition options (Japara,2019).
The organization also offers accommodation that protects the privacy of individuals. In this
regard, the aged are offered private single rooms and provided with interim shared
accommodation in case no rooms are available at the time of application.
In addition, Japara offers its clients 24 hours support by registered nurses, specialized
palliative care and individualized therapy plans (Japara, 2019).

The University of Third Age is a voluntary non-profit organization comprised mostly of
retired community members whose aim is to offer affordable educational opportunities to
the older members of the society in a supportive and pleasant social setting. Similarly, a
university of Third age may be described as a self-help group founded on the belief that the
elderly members of society have the knowledge and skills with which they can avail
learning opportunities for them (U3A Network NSW,2019).
Attending a meaningful activity such as the University of Third Age may affect the
psychological health of older adults in several ways. Research has linked improvement in
the health and general satisfaction levels of the elderly with attendance of University of
third Age activities. In this regard, old people who attend these activities have been found
to do better in cognitive abilities, well-being and general health as opposed to the elderly
who are not members of a University of Third Age (AI U3A, 2019).
Additionally, Universities of the Third Age have been found to contribute positively to
various individuals and social functions of older persons. Besides, it makes it possible for
older people to use their free time in a more productive manner instead of remaining
inactive (U3aonline, 2019.

Multiple age-related factors increase the risk of UTI infection among the elderly. These
may include immune system changes associated with old age, health issues such as
incontinence, the enlargement of the prostate, a common occurrence among the elderly and
urinary tract obstructions caused by conditions such as Kidney Stones (Shih et al., 2019).
Additionally, exposure to an unsafe environment in nursing homes is also a risk factor
associated with Urinary tract infections (Rowe & Juthani-Mehta, 2013).
One of the most important strategies that nurses can use to access, manage and prevent
UTI is adherence to hygiene guides. Part of the reason for the onset of UTI is the spread of
bacteria caused by unsafe environments. Adherence to hygiene standards may, therefore,
help nurses in the prevention and management of Urinary tract infections (Kammire,
2013).
Subsequently, due to the increase in the prevalence of Urinary tract infections especially
among the elderly populatiwith through encouraging thons, nurses need to ensure that they
constantly update their knowledge on treatment modalities of the infection. In this regard,
they should use education as a strategy of assessment, management and prevention of UTI
(Kammire, 2013).

The world Health organization describes Ageism as the discrimination, prejudice and
stereotyping of people based on their age (World Health Organization, 2019). The concept
is a major health concern, which has been found to have detrimental impact on the health
and emotional well-being of the elderly people. A majority of elderly population has to

deal with the issue of Ageism almost on daily basis. Some of the aspects associated with
ageism include exclusion of elderly people in employment, media stereotyping of the
elderly and denial of social services. Additionally, ageism is also responsible for the
marginalization of the elderly within their societies (World Health Organization, 2019).
According to Segeet (2016) Ageism is among the top institutionalized forms of prejudices
affecting world populations. She also adds that the concept of ageism is propagated by the
entire society including healthcare providers who view the old as burden to the society
(Seegert, 2016).
One of the strategies that may be used to combat ageism is creating public awareness on
the negative impacts that prejudice against the elderly may have on their health and
wellbeing. It may also be dealt with through the adoption of positive attitudes at personal
level (Officer & de la Fuente-Núñez, 2018).
