INTRODUCTION
Acute care nursing is a profession in which nurses work with patients in treating their acute
conditions and help them out in preparing for surgery Nibbelink & Brewer, (2018). This study is
going to discuss different types of care such as preoperative, postoperative and importance of
taking consent from patients. It will further discuss some nursing intervention that is being given
and the best suitable for cholecystitis.
PREOPERATIVE CARE
Q.1 Role of registered nurse in pre-operative teaching
Importance of pre-operative teaching: Before discussing about importance of pre-operative
education and teaching it is important to discuss about this term. So, in this regard it can be said
that it is an educational intervention that are being given by nurses and healthcare professionals
to patients before starting surgery. The main aim of this pre-operative surgery education to
patients is to increase patients’ skills, knowledge, health behaviour and outcomes.
It is stated that when patients are asked about surgery then they become nervous and sometimes
dear makes them anxious and it can have negative impacts on their health. Making patients
comfortable at the time of surgery is vital for having positive health outcomes. In the case of
Amelia who is admitted for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and intraoperative cholangiogram
which means there is requirement of removing gallbladder, it can be said that, she became
anxious about surgery and pain that will occur because of surgery Wilson & et.al., (2018). So,
for making her feel comfortable and any patient before surgery, this education is being provided
to them. In this education, nurses make patients aware about their actual situation and problems
along with the reason of surgery.
Role of the registered nurse in patient education prior to surgery
Registered nurses play a vital role in patients’ education given prior to surgery. Registered
nurses give education to patients before starting surgery in a way that can make them feel
comfortable and normal. This preoperative education includes information or instructions on
completing deep breathing and coughing exercise. The reason behind this exercise is to improve
blood oxygenation and promoting lung expansion in order to facilitate gas exchange. It is vital
before surgery otherwise it may create several problems and that can affect health outcomes.
Nurses not only make patients comfortable but also it helps itself in gaining health
outcomes by knowing all details of patients as past health problems. The reason behind knowing
