1NURSING ASSIGNMENT
Question.1a). As per the case study Chung had been suffering from
anxiety and depression which is one of the symptoms of panic disorder.
Chung had been suffering from emotional turmoil due to both his
professional and his personal life. He had been suffering from cultural shock
since she had visited China and even could not bring his parents on his
wedding. He had been through professional ups and the downs due to the
legal proceeding for one of his mistakes. Furthermore, the post pregnancy
complications of his wife have exacerbated anxiety and depression the
patient. Chung had been experiencing shortness of breath, hopelessness and
suicidal feeling which is a clinical manifestation of anxiety. Absence of
proper circadian cycle or sleep cycle have also been found to be the reason
of anxiety (Asghari et al., 2014).
Question 1. b) Although antidepressants are effective in treating the
depressive symptoms of the disease but medications might be used in
severe cases. In this case talk therapy can be used to treat panic disorder in
Chung. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of talk therapy that is suitable
to treat anxiety and depression in patients. This helps the patients by
changing the way they think and behave and helps to boost the happiness
by the modification of the dysfunctional emotions and behaviors. A CBT can
be provided by this community nurse or can be recommended to a
psychotherapist.

Question 2a. Chung displayed symptoms of anxiety and the depression which can lead to
severe anxiety disorder. Severe mental disorder will not only affect the personal life but will also
affect his professional life. Chung used to work for long hours with minimum sleep and had beeb
trying his best to establish his career as a successful dentist. He is far from his country and his
family for so long and fees guilty for not giving time to his wife Harriett even in the post
pregnancy period. He has got many responsibilities and panic disorder can debar him from his
responsibilities and generate a sense of hopelessness and the suicidal ideation.
Question 2b.
The case study reveals that Chung spent sleepless nights, working for long hours. Hence
mindfulness based therapy can be provided to Chung, which is a modified form of cognitive
behavioral therapy that incorporates practices of mindfulness practices like meditation and the
breathing exercises (Crane, 2017).
The rationale for using this therapy is that that it helps the clients to break away from
negative thoughts patterns causing a downward spiral in to the depressed state such that the
patient will be able to fight off the depression (Khoury et al., 2013, Serpa, Taylor & Tillisch,
2014).
At the time of counselling a mindfulness based therapy can be given to Chung, such as
breathing exercises, spending some time in the dark or meditating.
Question 3
One of the ethical issue is that that while providing care to Chung, a therapeutic
relationship should be built. As per the mental health act, every patient has got the right to

receive a patient centered care (RANZCP, 2015). Chung needs to be educated about the self-
regulatory techniques.
Another legal and professional issue is the providing privacy and autonomy to the patient
(Privacy Act 1988). Chung might feel uncomfortable to discuss about his problems in open
places or might hesitate to share his grievances at a go. Hence it is necessary to establish a
rapport with him and provide him with space and time to confess things (Lindwall et al., 2013).
