Introduction
The administration of safe, reliable, and efficient healthcare in various organizations
has been the aim for years. This paper describes a collaboration of a group of experts over
fifteen years to develop this ideal framework of healthcare (Frankel et al., 2017). This
framework consists of cultural and learning domains along with nine interrelated components
to ensure the welfare of patients and families.
Summary
The framework of safe, reliable, and effective care has been introduced with the help
of a group of subject-matter experts from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and
Safe and Reliable Healthcare (SRH). It consists of two main domains –cultural and learning
systems, which overall consists of nine main components among them. The cultural
component overarches the concepts of psychological safety, negotiation, accountability, and
finally, teamwork and communication. The learning system oversees the concepts of
improvement and measurement, transparency, reliability, as well as continuous learning. The
final component is leadership, which can be included under both domains. The learning
system aims to target the improvement in healthcare by targeting the strengths and defects of
the system by the process of reflection and improvement. This ensures good and consistent
performance, data sharing among the healthcare workers, finally learning about the defects in
the system and correcting them. The components of culture ensure healthy and efficient work
ethics among the healthcare workers in a more holistic manner, like in terms of psychological
welfare and responsibility. Leadership, being a part of both concepts, involves the leader
influencing their team to learn, trust, and provide good healthcare while being mentally
healthy and upholding their values.
