Foundational Thinking Skills
After conducting self-assessment inventory tests, I found that I have achieved low score
in Foundational Thinking Skills. The score is 1, which means I am novice in taking effective
decisions under complex situations and applying them. However, my score is 2 in applying
system thinking knowledge as an approach for analyzing and taking decisions. Such low scores
made me conscious towards improving the leadership skills in nursing. I decided to take actions
like: trying out some brain games, interpreting various situations, memorizing what I have
learnt and writing them out within a stipulated time.
Brain games
I got the idea of brain games from my colleagues and cousins. I indulged in games like
puzzles, crosswords, Sudoku among others. At the initial stage, I solved these casually.
Afterwards, I set time limits. This is to check assess my capability in memorizing the things,
which I have learnt. In this phase, I did not see the hints. This enhanced my self-confidence
regarding carrying out the challenging and enduring tasks, which is one of the common
characteristics in the nursing profession.
Interpreting various situations
When I am amidst my friends and colleagues, I try to interpret their open-ended
conversations. Most of my friends became frustrated with this habit of mine. However, I was
only concerned with my benefit. In other situations also, I tried to interpret the results of the
events, which took place in the workplace. Evaluation of the anticipated findings helped me to
improve on my thinking skills slowly and gradually.
