Relationship between leadership styles and patient safety
The term leadership style refers to the approach of providing
direction, motivating consumers in the workplace and implementing plans
that help in the growth of the business. The key role of leadership in health
care systems is to improve the performance of nurses and managing
complex situations which enhance patient safety (Boamah, Laschinger,
Wong, & Clarke, 2018). Patient safety is a kind of discipline and
responsibility that emphasize wellbeing in health care systems using
appropriate intervention programs. The purpose of this research essay is to
identify the relationship between leadership style and patient safety and
evaluate the importance of leadership in the enhancement of patient safety.
There are various kinds of leadership styles in which this paper will cover
transformational and transactional leadership styles and their significance
in the area of patient safety.
The leadership style is defined as the behaviour patterns which
leaders adopt for improving the performance of the employees in the
workplace and manage the overall effectiveness of the organization. In the
context of the health care system leadership style help nurses for
controlling and managing the health-related issues faced by the patients
and improve patient safety (Fischer, 2016). The leadership styles may either
be divided on the basis of the nature or situation of the process which can
identify the risk factors that affect the performance of the employees.
Leaders play a major role in the reduction of complexity or errors from the
systems and in the health care systems leaders provide a way for managing
patient safety in an effective way (Kvist, et al., 2013).
Patient safety is defined as a responsibility that emphasizes safety and
wellbeing in the area of health care using effective intervention programs.
According to the institute of medicine, the term patient safety refers to the
prevention of harm to the patients (Leroy, et al., 2012). It is very significant

for the nurses to provide effective and reliable intervention programs to the
patients and identify the risk factors which lead to health-related issues in
the patients. This research essay will provide a platform where readers can
enhance their skills and analyze the importance of leadership in the area of
patient safety.
It is examined that patient safety has the ability to prevent errors and
issues related to the patients and effective leaders are able to provide
reliable and appropriate prevention techniques to the patients. From the
previous investigation, it is observed that most of the health care systems
and hospitals are focusing on the patient safety and leadership styles where
they provide proper training and education to the nurses and help the
patients for reducing health-related issues (Lievens, & Vlerick, 2014).
In this research essay, there are major two leadership styles will be
discussed including transformational and transactional along with their
importance in the context of patient safety. These leadership styles are
highlighted below:
The term transformational is defined as a leadership style which is
mainly used for controlling and managing the performance of the
communities. A recent study argued that nurses might have basic
information about goals and assignment that they complete every day or
month where leaders help employees for completing their targets by
enhancing overall performance. With the help of transformational
leadership, the management team can identify the risk factors related to the
business and provide effective ways where the employees can enhance their
skills.
McFadden, Stock, & Gowen III, 2015) argued that transformational
leadership is mainly encouraged from the leaders who are able to motivate
nurses and provide effective intervention programs which lead patient
safety effectively. It is examined that transformational leadership is a theory
