As per Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2019),
more than 11% of the Australian aboriginals are suffering
from excess burden of disease and injury due to their risk
of obesity.
Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
Survey conducted in 2013 2014 determined that total 30%
children within the age of 5 to 15 were suffering from
obesity (Sevoya et al., 2019).
29% adolescents were obese and 37% of obese individual
were above the age of 15.
As per the Australian Institute of Health and
Welfare(2019) the rate of obesity was 1.5 times higher in
Australian indigenous population compared to non-
indigenous population.
Hence, this awareness program holds tremendous
importance among the population of this community in
Australia (Li & McDermott, 2015).
Introduction
Due to obesity, the aboriginal community are at high risk
of suffering from premature death and suffer from critical
healthcare conditions such as cardiovascular conditions,
cancer, congestive heart failure and others.
Besides these aspects such as renal disease, diabetes, high
risk of central obesity increases (Castles, Wainer &
Jayasekara 2016).
Further, due to severe obesity condition, aboriginal
communities develop blurred vision, numbness and
tingling sensation in their feet and hands, increased hunger
and fatigue.
Further, due to severe obesity condition, sleep apnoea and
other physiological and mental condition arises (Adegbija,
Hoy &Wang 2015).
Harmful effects of obesity among
aboriginals
Obesity among aboriginals and its risk factors
The first strategy should be related to changing the food and diet habit of Australian aboriginals and include healthy leafy
diet instead of junk food and unhealthy diet.
The second strategy should be associated with the active lifestyle so that sedentary lifestyle could be eliminated and they
could be provided with increased activity (Sevoyan et al., 2019).
The diet and liquid intake of each obese person should be calculated so that excess calorie and fluid intake could be
prevented.
Local government with majority of the aboriginal community should be provided with advisory related to binge TV
watching, substance abuse, alcohol consumption and smoking so that with strict scrutiny of the communities, the local
government could control the increasing obesity of the communities (Diouf et al., 2016).
Strategies that should be applied
Benefits
Application of these intervention would help to prevent
onset of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, coronary heart
diseases, congestive heart failure and other conditions that
could affect the health of people (Sevoyan et al., 2019).
Benefits of these preventive measures would be
associated with the application of healthcare interventions
so that sleep apnoea, alcoholic and smoking condition
could be prevented (Diouf et al., 2016).
The third intervention would benefit the aboriginal
community as it would help the patients with ability of self
improvement and hence, it would prevent the occurrence
of obesity (Li & McDermott, 2015).
Conclusion
This poster provided a detailed analysis of the obesity so
that the statistics related to obesity could be provided to
the patients and then with the help of these awareness
could be spread among the populations.
The poster provided the detailed pictorial representation
of the type of habits and activities that could lead to severe
obesity condition in aboriginal communities.
This poster provided a details with the reasons due to
which obesity increases and the harmful effects that arises
due to obesity condition.
It finally provided a detailed strategies using which the
occurrence of obesity could be decreased.
