About This Document

This article discusses the challenges faced by EHR systems and how the Open EHR approach addresses them. It explains the multiple layered and single sourced approach that allows domain experts to build models in their own layer within a software architecture. The article also describes the basic reference model and archetypes used in the Open EHR system.

Why do we need the Open EHR approach?
eHealth has become a term almost inseparable from the modern healthcare structure
which has been encompassing the utilization of communication and technology structure in
the world of healthcare. It has been shaping up the future of technology implementation in
healthcare since the time of its inceptions. However, it has been found that the experiences
that have been there in the EHR systems continued to display various major recurring
challenges.
The problems that arise due to the project course can be categorized as the deficiency
of clinical input on the side of the health practitioners. These health practitioners happen to be
the end users of the system altogether. EHR systems can cause serious difficulties to the
health professionals because of the results they produce. This causes difficulties in day to day
works and even during the coupled documentation production. Secondly, the problem arises
soon after the system deploys. Even if the first problem can be avoided, the problem still
arises shortly after deployment. Since, the data for health and health procedures are not static
and it tends to increase more and more with developing along with the progress in medicine it
is required that the change in the content of EHR is required. It has also been noticed that the
software design of EHR systems has been developed taking an inspiration from the software
design practices from other areas. Therefore, it happens to suffer from the inconsistency in
structure and content. As a result, it was needed that the project implementer requires huge
inputs to implement changes in the project. Thirdly, the problem involves a huge time
schedule when the system interoperability and scalability are being open to the elements to
the systems only when it is needed to be arranged in larger scales with conjunction to other
systems.
