Executive summary
The main purpose of this report is to study the operations at the Singapore Zoo, which is one of
the most popular tourist attractions in Singapore. The zoo attracts a large number of tourists from
around the world annually. The industry of wildlife tourism in Singapore is expanding at a rapid
rate, and Singapore Zoo should include strategic and operational changes so as to improve the
maintenance and staff management at the zoo. The following report conducts a SWOT analysis
of the zoo, and provides strategies for attracting more foreign tourists. The report also presents
recommendations for improving service operations and personnel management at the Singapore
Zoo.

Introduction
Singapore zoo, which is also commonly known as the Mandai zoo, is located near the
Upper Seletar Reservoir which is situated within the heavily forested catchment area in
Singapore. The zoo was opened in the year 1973, and is one of the most popular tourist
attractions in the area. The zoo has a massive coverage of 69 acres, and harbors approximately
315 different species of animals. As a matter of fact, the zoo is considered to be the home to a
large number of threatened species, which brings in both national and international tourists. The
most important aspect of the zoo is the fact that the animals are displayed in open exhibits, in
naturalistic environments. The zoo remains open on all days of the week, from 8 A.M to 6 P.M
(Singapore Zoo 2018).
Industry significance
A zoo like the Singapore Zoo is an essential part of the country’s economy since it
contributes to tourism. The Singapore Zoo attracts more than 1.7 million visitors annually, and as
such, forms an integral aspect of the region’s tourism industry (Singapore Zoo 2018). The
Singapore Zoo has a nominal charge as far as the ticket fares are concerned, which makes it a
popular hub for younger generations and families wishing to spend some quality time. Annually,
the zoo reels in nearly 95 million dollars in revenue. Singapore, as a city, lacks variety in terms
of natural wonders. Yet, the wildlife destination by the name of Singapore Zoo helps in attracting
eco tourists from all around the world. Zoos fulfill their responsibilities towards the environment
and conservation through the breeding, education, development research, enrichment, welfare
and support for animals (Curtin and Kragh 2014). As such, zoo tourism at the Singapore Zoo
