PART 1
LO1
P1. Impact of culture, power and politics of an organization on employees
Culture
Organization's culture are the characteristics and traits of the organization and employees
that work with firm. It defines the way employees communicate with each other and their roles
and responsibilities within firm. These traits set an organization apart from their competitors.
Organization's culture is mixture of different cultures, traditions, attitudes or beliefs (Al Ali
Elanain and Ajmal, 2016). In order to understand organizational culture briefly, Handy model of
Organizational culture is used. This model was given by Charles Handy, and according to him
there are four different types of cultures, mainly power, role, task and person.
`Such organization power are concentrated by top management of company, and they
only take various crucial decision in order to gain competitive advantage in the market. In power
culture, power is given to only few employees, and they are responsible for driving the
organization, organizational power have the ability to influence employee to work on something,
1

which they refused earlier (Alqahtani, 2018). It is also an ability to control resources of the
organization. Employees performances are analysed by their achievements in power culture
(Khadar, 2018). Power is among the top management and employees take less or no part in
decision-making of company. And those individuals may find themselves as unique and superior
to others. This will further contribute in creating conflicts among employees, and powerless
employees might feel demotivated or to work poorly. Organization that adopts role culture
distribute power on the basis of roles and responsibilities performed by each employees within
firm. are strict on following rules. Everyone in such organization knows their roles and
responsibilities. Then comes task culture in it teams is formed on basis of achieving a specific
task, teams are formed with mixture of skills and abilities. Thus, on the basis of task to be
performed by each individual power is given to achieve common objectives of company. Last
comes Person culture individual assumes himself/herself as superior from others in an
organization because of its high skilled and knowledge. It takes power to rule within firm
because it have more knowledge and experience about particular matter. Primark follows roles
culture because it establishes highly controlled environment, and employees of Primark are well
aware of their duties and responsibilities and work according to that (Opoku and Arthur, 2018).
Primark maintains positive work culture, and through that more and more talented employees are
willing to join the organization. Positive office culture also helps in boosting productivity of
employees. Employees of Primark feels more satisfied and engaged while working in positive
workplace culture of an organization and it will result in effective team building and team
performance. This improves Primark's team and employee behaviour and their performances too.
It is also believed that employees which are influenced by good work culture will help the
organization to achieve their goals. Organization's culture also shapes employee interactions
which will further result in shaping team behaviours.
Politics
Organizational politics refers to the activities of company that defined the way people
interact with each other on basis of power and authority of individual within firm. Main objective
of organizational politics is to sell ideas and vision informally and to achieve some internal
targets of self-interest, or may be to improve/influence organizational tasks. Primark's
organizational politics can impact tremendously on behaviour of individuals or their employee.
The origin of organizational politics is the diversification of viewpoint of employees (Gavrić,

Sormaz and Ilić, 2016). Also, Primark's organizational politics helps in making employee to
compromise in complex situations, which boosts their morale. But still it has adverse effects,
which could not be ignored. Organizational politics affects employee performance by distracting
them from work and snatches away their focus. It also contributes in wastage of time.(Mansouri,
Singh and Khan, 2018) Excessive involvement of employees in politics will result in low
productivity and poor job performance, that's why Primark's top management manages politics
quickly by not allowing them on the first place. Also, Primark have adopted and promoted such
positive politics that discourages self-serving attitudes. Through this behaviour, employee will
demand favours from team leaders or seniors regarding promotion or salary hikes etc. And this
would affect performances of those employees who are not involved in office politics (McLeod,
2017). Primark encourages politics that works according to proper guidelines and procedures in
ethical way. Such types of politics helped Primark in increasing their employee productivity.
This would lead in failure of achievement of Primark's objectives. Engagement in politics would
lead to committing more mistakes.
Primark's organizational politics also establishes positive environment at workplace. It
allows employees to giver their best. It is also a major motivating factor for many employees of
Primark. Because high skilled employee of Primark will bring promotion, salary hikes and other
benefits, that are deserved by him/her. Also, Primark's politics appreciated hard-work of the
honest employees and recognized their contribution. Because if they fail in that, it will result in
a poor political environment of an organization, which will force employees to work poorly.
(Narzary and Palo, 2020) Because from this, employees will not be able to trust each other or
cannot have fun while doing the job. So, Primark promotes healthy environment so that
employees can have fun and can interact in order to influence their behaviour and team building
in positive way. Organizational politics also allows employees to manipulate and pass irrelevant
information, which is often misunderstood by colleagues and can affect their contribution which
will ultimately result in non achievement of objectives (Walle, 2018). But, this does not happen
in Primark, because they have established such work culture in which employees trust each
other, effectively and efficiently contribute towards achievement of organizational goals. All
these points, ultimately contribute in influencing behaviour and attitude of individual and also in
building and influencing teams.

Power It refers to ability and capacity of an individual to perform specific task by other
employee's in order to achieve organisational objectives.
French and Raven Power Types helped Primark to understand the importance of power in
the organization. Power also helps to increase stability of organization as it helps to motivate
employees to achieve that power by increase their potential and also improves productivity of
company.
Coercive Power- This power is used against the will of the employees as it does not seek consent
from employees. It can be done by negative manner like punishment or positive manner like
rewards which help to achieve the objectives. Employees of Primark will increase the turnover
due to this type of power.
Reward Power- Primark use this Power on employees which do not want to accept the task as
managers rewards employees to finish the task in return of some reward which help them to
provide motivation but it is not suitable in long term and decrease the productivity of company.
Manager of primark company motivate employees that work hard for company by providing
better incentive and compensation.
Expert Power-this is the most useful and effective power for Primark as it helps to understand the
potential of employees and then assign them the tasks which match with their capability. This
also helps to increase efficiency and loyalty of employees in the company. Manager of Primark
give power to motivate and influence employees by giving him power to take some of the
decision-making of the company. Thus, it create felling of belongingness and satisfy needs of
employees.
M1

P2. Models, Theories and concept used to motivate employee
Motivation is a factor that creates desire, motivate and influences individual to work
effectively and enhances performance for the achievement of company goals. Primark company
can use various models, concept and theories in order to motivate employees to enhances their
work performance (Venter, 2016).
Maslow's Need hierarchy theory
It is motivational theory that has five tiers of satisfying human psychology needs present
in the form of pyramid. Lower level hierarchy needs to be satisfied first then, it should move
upward in the hierarchy (Kim, Lee and Shin, 2019). Various needs of individual are
physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization. Physiological need is
the most basic need that motivate behaviour of individual to work effectively. So, manager of
Primark can use Maslow need hierarchy theory in order to motivate employees and increase their
performance. It is used in finding appropriate needs of particular individual as every person have
different needs that has to be satisfied in order to achieve objectives. It used by fulfilling demand
and preferences of employees in an effective manner.
Physiological needs-It includes basic needs such food, clothing and shelter and this needs to be
satisfied first in order to motivate individual further. By satisfying most basic needs of individual
company can effectively increase its production and profit margin. Primark provides
accommodations and proper salary to employees to ensure the fulfilment of these needs. (Batten,
Lončarski and Szilagyi, 2018)
Safety and security needs-After satisfaction of physiological needs, another needs arises that is
safety and security, it is related to personal and financial security of an individual. Primark's
manager by providing health insurance and taking various measure to ensure safety of their

between employees such as trust, feeling of belongingness and accepting ideas, opinion and view
of employees to feel it as a part of company. Thus, strong interpersonal relationship reduces
conflict and helps in effectively coordination of individual efforts towards organizational goals.
Primark will help employees by providing healthy working environment and also developing
ethical culture to respect each and every employees in the company. (Nazarian and et.al., 2020)
Esteem needs-After satisfaction of all three needs, employee is further motivated by
appreciation, respect and recognition for their efforts in the organization. It includes self-esteem
need and personal worth that means they have valued in the organization and their ideas, opinion
are crucial for organization (Furlich, 2016). Primark will provide appreciations and reward to
employees which are performing efficiently. Such as by recognition and reward their effort
through social media where large number of employees can see who has performed well in
previous year.
Self -actualisation needs- It is last stage of motivation to exploit individual capabilities, potential
to the maximum for achievement of company's goals. At this stage, employee realize about
personal growth, self- fulfilment, peak experience, its potential and desire to become everything
one is capable of becoming. Thus, at this stage Primark can exploit capabilities of employees to
maximum for achievement of organizational goals. Primark will provide training to all the
employees which helps to achieve this need and increase their efficiency. (Hadi, Abdullah and
Atshan, 2019)
So, company can effectively able to satisfy needs of individuals as per their requirement
thus able to enhance their performance and achieve organizational goals.
Herzberg's Two Factor Theory
This theory helps to analyse the factors which satisfy employees and factors which dissatisfied
employee thus taking together both factor motivators and hygiene are known as Herzberg's Two
Factor Theory. Five factors of motivation are achievement, recognition, work itself,
responsibility and advancement whereas factor for job dissatisfaction are company's policy and
administration, salary, supervision, interpersonal relationship and working condition. According
to Herzberg, healthy working environment and effective policies of company helps to motivate
employees to work more effectively. So, Primark company by using Herzberg's theory of
motivation to increase performance has provide good working condition and building strong

relationship among employees. (Coxen, Van der Vaart and Stander, 2016) Policies of company
are also well-defined to reduce confusion among employees regarding way to perform particular
task.
Primark company use this process of motivation theory and focuses on what motivates
and considers the way of process works and sustain itself over the time so it determine degree of
effort and modification of effort (Cote, 2017). In process of motivation company follows equity
theory and expectancy theory to motivate and influence behaviour of individual.
Equity Theory- This model is comparison of individual employee with other employees in the
company having same ability and knowledge on the basis of reward and recognition. So,
manager of Primark is responsible to reward employees in company according to fair and
equitable basis and not discriminate on basis of gender, age, caste etc. to increase performance
(Alessandri, Borgogni and Latham, 2017). Thus, equitable reward system lead to effective
performance and contribute in the success and growth of company.
Expectancy Theory- This model explains that performance of an individual depends upon
desirability of outcome or how much individual wants a reward.(Meymandpour and Pawar,
2018). So manager of Primark ensure that employees are rewarded effectively as per their
performance for success and growth of company. Such as employees expect that company will
provide better compensation or increasing its incentive thus primark by understanding such
factors is able to influence employees.
Primark need to adopt Maslow's needs theory which will help to increase the motivation
of employees. As this theory helps to understand all the factors to increase efficiency of
employees. With the help of these factors Primark formulate effective motivation strategies to
achieve objective and also increase the sales of products of company.

background, behaviour and nature of other employees in the organization. So, leader or manager
of Primark by providing orientation, is able to familiarize individual with other employee and
build strong relationship for achievement of company objectives.
Storming stage- It is most critical and difficult stage due to increase competition and conflict
between employees that adversely impact on performance of team. Employees disagree with
each other on basis of opinion, views and goals thus affecting working environment of company.
Thus, Primark's leader reduces obstacle, conflict, individual difference to increase their
productivity and performance of employees for achievement of company goals. (Molleman
and Gächter, 2018)
Norming stage- It is stage where conflict and competition among employees come to an end and
they work together for achievement of common objectives. At this stage individual role,
responsibilities and interrelationship between employees are clear to enhance their performance.
