INTRODUCTION
The organizational theory and practices are the different techniques and methodologies
which the organization needs to follow so as to make the business run and work in legitimate and
powerful way. This incorporates all the part of the business whether be it culture and structure of
organization, inspiration, working example, style of administration, power inside the
organization and numerous other related things (Crawford, James and Oplatka, 2017). Every one
of these choices are to be taken by the organization so as to viably running the business in a
fruitful way and if these factors are not considered the businesses won’t be able to operate the
business effectively.
The current study is based over the company BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO (BAT)
which is a British multinational company dealing in manufacturing of cigarettes, nicotine,
tobacco and other related products. The company was founded in year 1902 and is headquartered
in London in England UK. The current study will outline and analyse the management styles
used by the CEO of BAT that is Mr. Jack Marie Henry David Bowles.
The current study will start by evaluating the management style being used by the CEO
in managing operations of company. Further this will list out the culture and structure being
followed by BAT and its impact over the employees of the company. Along with this the
discussion will also take place on the leadership style being used by Jack in increasing the
efficiency and effectiveness of organization. Furthermore the discussion will take place over the
effect which power, and conflict has upon the company and its performance. In the end the
discussion will be based on the different types of motivation and its techniques which are being
used in company for influencing employees.
MAIN BODY
A. Management style and principles and function of management used by CEO of BAT
In order to make the business a success, it is very essential to implement a management
style which will in effectively managing the business activities within the business organization.
This is important because if management of everything is not proper then it will have an effect
on the overall performance and productivity of the organization. Therefore, in order to become a
success, the CEO of BAT Jack Marie used the consultative management style. Under this
management style, the manager of the organization asks for the ideas and opinion of the team

members and gives value to each of the viewpoint (Zakaria and Ahmad, 2016). After doing so,
the final decision is being made by the manger. This technique is mainly useful in the certain
specialized fields were team members are the experts and the input provided by them is utilised
for taking informed decisions. This form of style assists in creating a bond with the staff and
builds trust. The CEO jack Marie has made use of this style and the reason behind making use of
this style is that it assisted CEO in getting the viewpoint and thoughts of the staff before taking
any decision which consequently lead to establishing a good relation with the staff along with
motivating and increasing the morale of the employees as it involves everyone while undertaking
a decision.
Along with the management style, there are certain principles and functions which are
followed by the Jack Marie with the aim of effectively managing the organization. The CEO
works on the planning function of management as it is the most crucial part of management if
planning process is not carried out properly it will result into ineffective and improper
management of the organization, because of this reason Jack Marie is involved in this function
and ensure everything is planned perfectly (Durant, Carlon and Downs, 2017). Along with this,
Jack Marie also takes into watch, the direction function as well, this due to the fact that as CEO
has prepared the plan and thus very well aware of it and so can provide better direction or the
pathway to go. This assists the CEO in ensuring success by accomplishing the desired goals and
objectives on time. Thus, CEO of BAT makes use of these functions to effective management
the business and attains desired outcomes and objectives.
B. Organization structure and culture at BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO and its impact on
employees
For the effective working of company the most important thing is to maintain a good
culture and structure within the company. Both of these are important as if the company will not
be able to manage the culture and structure then employees within the company will not be
happy and satisfied and this will result in decrease in efficiency of employees. For the effective
management of BAT, Bowles uses the hierarchical structure within the company (Ruben and
Gigliotti, 2017). The major reason for the use of this structure is that every employee work
within the hierarchical structure only. This structure assists the company in managing the
business in effective manner. The reason underlying this fact is that every employee knows that
to whom they have to report and from whom they will get all the instructions. This creates a
