Introduction
Business communication refers to
the activity of conveying useful
information which is required for
routine operational activities of
the organisation. To ensure
effective communication within
an organisation, it is important to
maintain proper hierarchical
structure.
Interpersonal barriers: These
are the barriers which an
individual create due to his
inability to properly communicate
to others. These includes self-
doubt, lack of confidence, poor
interaction skills and other such
factors which might affect the way
messages are conveyed and
interpreted.
Barriers to effective
communication
Physical barriers: These barriers
are the structural obstacles which
are serving as hindrance in
effective interaction between
senders and receivers. Some
common physical barriers could
be noise, chaotic environment,
technological errors, poor
infrastructure and other difficulties
which affect the process of proper
communication.
Organisational structure barriers:
These barriers related to interruption in
effective communication due to the
hierarchy structural or the complex
processes followed in an organisation.
The complex procedures of conveying
messages disrupt the flow of
information and effective
communication. This might result in
differences between how the sender
wanted to convey message and how it
was delivered.
Perceptual barriers: The cause of
these barriers is the differences of
opinion and beliefs which results in
interpretation of information
differently. These barriers impact
upon effective communication due
to the fact that every individual has
different perception.
Emotional barriers: These refers to
the state of mind which could affect
individuals in performing their job
tasks in an effective and productive
manner. Emotional barriers could be
of two types, positive and negative
emotional barriers. Positive
emotional barriers may include
happiness and excitement which
could divert the mind of employees.
Negative emotional barriers refer to
disturbed state of mind like anger,
anxiety, depression etc.
