PHOTOJOUNALISM ASSIGNMENT
1 Feminist movements has changed the perception of how the world should treat different
genders and their roles in the society. The evolution of feminism and the revolution emerging out
of it essentially speaks of justice and equality. The pioneers of the movement have time and
again claimed that gender is a social construct, and therefore, could be amended and
transformed. Traditionally, the terms sex and gender are used almost synonymously, often
interchangeably. However, they do not necessarily bear the same connotations. Sex refers to the
anatomical and biological differences between male and female that is assigned to individuals at
the time of conception. However, gender refers to the different cultural and social roles that
society assigns to people based on their biological sex (Barkan, 2011). Subsequently, this
assignments entail certain expectation from both men and women, which they are supposed to
fulfill. For example, men are usually thought to be both physically and emotionally strong, brave,
active, intelligent and aggressive; whereas the notion of femininity is adorned with delicate
