1ANALYZING THE POWER OF NEWS MEDIAJournalism has its origins in the early 14th to 17th century when printing was justbeginning to make it presence felt. Newssheets devoted to news from beyond boundaries, newspapers that laid the foundation of the Press, mass circulation of papers characterized thelater 18th and 19th centuries. The 20th century witnessed the evolution of other forms of the mediathat is the radio and television. The aim of the essay however, is to focus on the role of the news media in strengtheningthe voices of the people in the margin. The marginalized people may include the women in thefield of sport, the indigenous Australians, refugees and the environmentalists. The essay willprovide an overview of the news media and scrutinize its role in bringing the voices of thesepeople to the fore. McQuail (2013), while focusing on the role of journalism, identified “three levels ofattention” that comprised the practice of journalism. The individual journalist, the newsorganization and the society comprised these three levels of attention. The journalists often find themselves in a dilemma while deciding whether to followprinciples of the organization or the principles of the society. The news organization maintainsand follows its own set of principles although without colliding with the societal norms andrules. It is but interesting to note that the principles followed by the news organization oftencollide with the principles of the individual journalists. The reason for this is the tendency of thenews organization to enhance its position within the field by building connection with thepolitical parties or politicians. On an individual level, the relationship between journalist and theaudience is argued to be of either a critic or a medium.

The people regarded the media as the source by which they couldvoice their opinions against or in favor of various issues. Many organizations and individualsthat work towards ensuring equal opportunities for all classes of people, turn to the news mediato tell their stories. However, not always are their stories told in ways they desire. There arenumerous instances where the news media played an important role in putting forward the viewsof the marginalized people. One such instance is the place of women in sport. In sport, the representation of women has always been a matter of debate to thejournalists since the media entered its realms. It needs mentioning that sport holds a prominentplace in any society including Australia. In fact, the craze for sport has surpassed the films aswell. The Australian nation is obsessed with sport and many role models have come out fromthis field. They included the cricketing legends like Sir Don Bradman, tennis legends like RodLaver, swimming stars like Ian Thorpe and so on. Like the sporting legends, sport journalistsalso became somewhat a star while covering the lives of these sporting legends. People like JohnArlott, John McPhee and Norman Mailer amongst others redefined the way sport is transmittedto the viewers. However, the significance of women as both sporting personalities and sportjournalists was not realized until the late 20th century. Even after that, women have not beengiven the importance they deserve as sport players and writers. Evidences are in abundance thatshows the role news media plays in both undermining the voices of women sporting personalitiesand acting on behalf of the suppressed voice. The telecast of men and women’s cricket is a greatexample of understanding this bias. While all the mainstream news media channels and paperscover the men’s cricket, women’s cricket receives the least coverage. Other sports like the
