8.1Reflection Questions
1. Describe YOUR performance in the conduct of: (800)
a) Identifying hazards.
b) Conducting a risk assessment.
c) Implementation of strategies to control risks.
d) Overcoming barriers in the implementation.
e) Providing training to staff members.
Guidance: Address your strengths and weaknesses during the process (at
least one of each for each point) and how you will improve your
performance for the next inspection you conduct.
a) While engaging in the process of identifying hazards at the Awesome
Landscape, my approach was to follow all the fundamental policies and
procedures in accordance with the WHS law so that any discrepancies and
safety issues at the site could be accurately identified. The strength of
following existing laws and safety procedures and requirement was that it
helped to understand the supporting mechanisms that existed at the
organization to achieve health and safety and understand discrepancies in
infrastructures or procedures that might hamper safety and lead to hazards
too. However, despite following WHS procedures and guidelines for hazard
identification, one of the weaknesses of my action was that I had not
prioritized the goals and objectives of inspection beforehand. The inspection
process became hectic as due to lack of prioritization of task, inspection
process could not be properly organized. Hence, after facing several issues
during the inspection, I aim to improve my action in the future by adapting a
planned and systematic approach to hazard identification. This would help to
handle staff issues while proposing change in the organization as well as
implement improvement plan in a smooth manner. For my next inspection in

the future, I also plan to record and review hazards in terms of different
categories such as physical hazards, chemical hazards, ergonomic hazards.
This would help to systematically identify and plan improvement in different
areas of the organization.
b) While conducting a risk assessment at the Awesome Landscape, my
approach was to identify each hazards and rate each of them based on the
probability of future occurrence and expected level of damage through it.
The main advantage of taking this approach was that future action plan for
health and safety could be systematically developed. Based on the likelihood
of occurrence of hazards, safety plans could be prioritized based on severity.
Hence, rating of hazards during risk assessment is the strength of my action
as it directs implementation of resources in the right direction. Such
planned and systematic approach results can support in implementing WHS
policy through an effective safety management system. However, despite
considering rating system and severity of each hazards during risk
assessment, one weakness of my conduct during risk assessment was that
coordination with the appointed officer was not accurately done. For
example, due to lack of coordination, actions were implemented haphazardly.
This lead to discord between staffs and the actual goal of risk assessment
was hampered. Hence, my plan for the future is to intimidate all involved
staffs about the ultimate goal of risk assessment and plan order of events
sequentially so that goal and objective of inspection is achieved in a timely
manner.

c) After identifying hazards and risks at the Awesome Landscape, I had

planned many strategies to control risks. Different strategy was implemented
for each type of hazards. I took the approach to either eliminate hazard or
reduce them to an extent to minimize the damage. The main strength of my
action was that strategies were planned based on severity of damage. This
helped to eliminate serious hazards completely and implement effective
action for less hazardous procedures or infrastructure at the Awesome
Landscape. However, one weakness of my action was that I did not applied
OHS legislation to control risk at the workplace. Therefore, in response to
this weakness, my plan for the future is to acquire knowledge about the
different hierarchy of controls available while developing risk control options
and seek input from other stakeholders too so that that best measures can be
implemented to control risk.
d) Some of the barriers faced while seeking to enhance safety at the Awesome
Landscape was that the staffs at the organization has not complied with the WHS
legislation. Hence, because of this many addition issues was difficult to resolve and
it needed additional expense too. My action plan was to strictly adhere to the WHS
legislation while controlling risk. This was necessary to reflect safety. However, lack
of coordination with key stakeholders was my main weakness. I understood that
health and safety management relies mainly on the employers and proper
communication with senior managers, supervisors and employees is necessary to
achieve the proposed goals of health and safety. In the future, I aim to improve my
action by ensuring regular communication with upper level staffs so that resources,
infrastructures and appointment of staffs with specific skills is done for evaluation
and improvement of health management system at the institute.
e) My main goal while providing training to staff members was to reduce ego
and lack of coordination among staffs. My training focused on skill development and

improving team communication process. The advantage of focussing on
communication aspect during training was that it helped employees to understand
the importance of consultation prior to completing each activity. Communication
and skill development made staffs aware about likely disruptions during different
activities and find out several procedures that can hamper health and find solutions
for procedures that is hectic or difficult to be implemented. For example, this aspect
of training supported me to enable employees to adapt new procedure for fixing the
waste management procedures.
2. Review the risks you have identified in the organisation during risk
assessment. List at least two (2) that you think are relevant or have an
impact in the whole organisation.

Guidance: Specify how these risks affect your own work responsibility AND the
work area, according to the organisation’s policies and procedures. (400)
While conducting the health and safety audit at the Awesome landscape, 11
types of hazards were identified during health and safety audit. Among these
hazards, the two hazards that can have an impact on the whole organization
included inappropriate storage of dangerous chemicals and presence of
many exposed sockets. These two risks has been identified to have major
impact on the whole organization because storage of dangerous chemicals
along with other chemicals and exposed power sockets can lead to fire
hazard and lead to unwanted accidents and safety issues for workers. I have
identified inappropriate storage of chemicals as a major risk as it can lead to
multiple type of issues in the organization. Firstly, mixing up dangerous
chemicals with other chemical may lead to reactivity, explosion and health
hazards to employees such as skin burns, skin rashes and allergic reaction.

According to the organization’s policy, all employees have the duty to obey
all duties and responsibilities in relation to fire and chemical threat. There
are many safety regulations for material handling that gives detail on safety
requirement for storage areas. Hence, as part of duty to the organization,
improving storage process of chemicals and taking steps for proper
arrangement of dangerous chemical is important.
In addition, open sockets can turn out to be a major risk for the whole
organization as it can lead to both small fires and major fire outbreak in the
whole organization. Open sockets is a type of unwanted risk that can lead to
unwanted emergencies. Hence, corrective action as per the organization
policy is necessary so that proper replacement can be found and applied at
desired places. Corrective action is also necessary to save resources and use
them in other issues. The organization’s policy mandates random and
periodic safety inspections and in according with this risk, following
appropriate action is necessary.

i. WHS legislation and Safe Workplace Code of Practice were some of the
legislations that were followed while conducting the hazard inspection and
preparing the presentation of the report. Following the WHS guideline was
important because the audit report intended to identify areas of non-compliance at
the site and the WHS guideline was an appropriate framework that helped to see
whether the organization duties pertaining to health and safety policies were
followed by employer and employees or not. Both the WHS regulation and code of
practice gave an overview about ways to make the workplace safe and healthy. This
helped to identify anomalies in current procedures and activities. In addition, the
code of practice helped to identify and evaluate the kind of standards that is
necessary to control specific hazards and risks.
ii. While developing the presentation, the two organizational policies that I followed included the
guidelines related to WHS policy and the employee’s duty and responsibilities. Following the employee’s
duty and responsibilities helped to appropriately structure the report and find out the important action that
is necessary to conduct while engaging in the process of risk identification and risk assessment. In addition,
the safety procedures listed by the Awesome Landscape enabled understanding important obligation that is
necessary as part of Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and identify whether healthy work environment
exist at the site. In according with these guidelines, several hazards could be identified and details about it
could be appropriately reported while engaging in risk management. It helped to report about those staffs
who are not following WHS legislation and also proposed recommendation for improving health and safety
outcomes for the employee and the organization. By the review of WHS legislation, additional requirement
for protective clothing and improving conduct of existing employees could be identified.

4. Consider the presentation you conducted, and the feedback you received
from your two evaluators.
a) Briefly describe how your target audience/participants verbally
(spoken or written) responded during your presentation.
b) Briefly describe how your target audience/participants non-verbally
(reactions, gestures, silence, etc.) responded during your
presentation.
Consider also the intended outcomes you have provided in your
Presentation Production Plan (Part 6.1).
c) Were you able to achieve these outcomes during your presentation?
If not, write at least two (2) specific actions on how you can better
improve the reactions from your audience.
a) My target audience for the presentation included staffs and workers of the
Awesome Landscape. While delivering the presentation, I found they were
attentive and inquired about many information given too.
b) The audience were attentive particularly when recommendation was
provided which indicated they wanted improvement in their work skills.
However, as audience were not attentive throughout the presentation, I aim to
make the presentation more visually appealing and add more graphical aspects
for audience to interpret risk assessment result more easily.
c) The intended outcome was to help the audience understand way to reduce
risk in the workplace. This outcome was achieved partly. To improve, I aim to
plan more practical steps and tools to support workers to bring improvement
during risk management and control process.

provided which indicated they wanted improvement in their work skills.

Subject: Incident Report Feedback
Message:
The external audit of the workplace injury of Johann Pricely has been concluded and
it matches the incident form reporting as was done by the safety officer. The report
has found that no proper risk assessment was conducted on the site prior to the
paving project which caused the team to overlook the risk posed by the steep slope
of the canal banks.
The external investigation report has revealed that the three most common reported
incidents and cause of injuries and related illnesses are muscular stress, hitting
object with part of body, fall on the same level such as slip and trip. These are often
caused by problems of awkward postures, incorrect lifting of heavy objects which
cause force or pressure on your shoulder, static loading, hand-arm vibration, such
as vibration caused by a power tool
full body vibration, such as vibration caused by driving over rough roads.
Various other factors which can contribute to this are improper used furniture, tools
or equipment, benches or workstations that are too high, too low or too far from the
body
machinery that operates too quickly for user comfort, workspace design that
requires repeated bending, stretching or twisting or repetitive manual tasks. The
report indicates that there needs to be consultation with your occupational health
and safety officer to devise ways to change and improve work practices and
workspace design.
Thank you
