1 DISCUSSION Discussion Post Project management is a technique of making use of effective tools, techniques and planning skills to ensure successful project execution. However, management of global project require a project manager to possess certain key personal traits and competencies for ensure an effective project management. For management of global project, it is essential for a project manager to have certain essential skills of negotiation, leadership, communication, team building and skills of managing the human resources. However, apart from these essential skills, a manager needs to hold certain key abilities to be internationally ready and to manage the project in a global environment. One particular personal trait that a global project manager needs to hold in order to be operative include the skill of being culturally sensitive. A global project manager needs to work with a culturally diverse team and therefore, this particular skill is required to be possessed by the manager (Binder, 2016). Apart from that, it is necessary for the manager to be anexcellentcommunicatortoperformeffectivelyinglobalprojects.Theseskillsand competencies are important for the project managers to possess while management of a global team mostly because in a global context, a manager needs to work with a culturally diverse team and communicate with the team in an effective manner to make the team members understand the expectations and the deliverables of the project (Zulch, 2014). Apart from that, another must have skill for a manager is the ability of the manager to negotiate and resolve conflict. This can be achieved by building commitment within the team (Barnwell et al., 2014). Project Selection is a process of assessing a particular idea to select a project having highest priority. The selection of any project is mainly done on basis of the aims, objectives and
2 DISCUSSION the description of the project. In this context, one example of a project can be cited where certain issues were faced in project selection. In Queensland Health Payroll (QHP) project there were issues with project selection and the process chosen for execution of the project, which lead to project failure (Eden & Sedera, 2014). The key issues that were associated with the project included ineffective communication and ineffective decision making. Although the purpose of the project was clear in the selection process, the implementation process of the project was not clearly defined. The project selection could have been done on basis of the implementation process chosen for the project which could have helped in developing a feasible project plan. Therefore, effective project selection play a key role in management and execution of a project. The QHP project faced schedule issues and issue of budget overrun. The project selection process for the QHP project should have addressed the key areas of project management, which are time and cost management. The project team of QHP project did not address the key areas while making a project selection leading to failure of the project.
