Designing a Renewable Energy System

The assignment describes a student's experience in designing and developing a renewable energy system that harnesses waste energy from vehicles to generate electricity. CE 2.2 Project Background
CE 2.2.1 Characteristics of the project
Power generation is one of the crucial factor for a developing country and as it belongs to
my background, we considered this topic for our project. I developed a model that can be helpful
in utilizing the kinetic energy produced by the vehicles and could be transformed into electrical
energy that can be further used for many purposes. I had installed the moving plates on the roads
that can be rotated through the strokes generated by vehicles running on the road and further
electricity can be generated through the application of crank mechanism. The project was
successfully delivered and the developed setup can be used for the electricity production through
utilizing the kinetic energy of the vehicles.
CE 2.2.2 Objectives developed for the project
I set the following list of the objectives for the execution of the project in successful
manner:

 To utilize the waste energy generated by the vehicles for the production of electricity
 To setup a model that can transform the kinetic energy generated into electrical energy
 To introduce an alternative renewable source of energy that can be applicable in future
 To execute the project in well panned manner and meet the schedule and budget
CE 2.2.3 My area of work
I accomplished the testing of the developed model and collected the results based
on the experiments. I had to accomplish my sector of the work in an effective and efficient
manner for the successful accomplishment of the objective set for the project. I performed the
experiment through placing the setup at the edge of the speed breakers in a pit where the vehicles
can roll over the setup and allow the movement in the arrangement in manner to generate
electricity. I collected the voltage readings using the multimeter and plotted the graphs for
representing the efficiency of the project. I plotted the graphs of voltage-generated v/s the load
and voltage generated v/s vehicle’s speed. I had to play my role within the team and accomplish
the project through establishing a perfect teamwork.

CE 2.2.5 My responsibilities throughout the project
I had to perform testing on the developed model for which, I had used the
multimeter in manner to gather the input and output values. I was responsible for the identifying
the output of the project and comparing with the effort made on the project. I had to make sure
that the output of the power generated by the model is 7000 KW in twenty-four hours and 250
Watts in sixty minutes. I had to deliver the project successfully and perform my responsibility
with responsibility.

CE 2.3 Distinctive Activity
CE 2.3.1 Comprehending the theory of the project
I had used the basic principle of energy conversion from one form to another, utilized it
for the rotation of the power generation setup, and thus, transformed the kinetic energy into
electrical energy. The moving plate is installed at the edges of the speed breakers that will be
rotated whenever the vehicles passes over the breaker, the energy will be transferred to the
keyway flywheel system. The generated motion can be further utilized for the production of
electricity as hundreds of vehicles are on the roads nowadays, total energy can be of higher
value. The keyway flywheel can be designed in a manner that it can achieve a large amount of
the inertia and can be installed within a low space. This generated value of electricity can be
further transferred to the grids if many of such setups are established on the roads. These
energies can be utilized for supplying power to the streetlights and for another small processes.

CE 2.3.2 Engineering knowledge and skills applied in the project
I executed the calculations for the determination of the power developed considering the
mass of the vehicles and determined value was 4.905 W in one minute and 7063.2 KW within 24
hours. The determined value was helpful in determining that the efficiency of the project was
much higher and it can be utilized for lighting the streetlights. Following calculation was used
for the development of the project:
4.1 Output Power Calculations
Height of speed brake = 10 cm
The mass of a vehicle = 300Kg (Approximately)
Work done = Force x Distance
Force= Body Weight = 2943 N (300 Kg x 9.81 N)
Distance traveled = speed brake height =10 cm
Output power = Work done/Sec = (2943 x 0.10)/60 = 4.905 Watts (For One pushing force)
Power developed for 1 vehicle for one minute = 4.905 watts; for 60 minutes (1 hr) =294.3 Watts;
for 24 hours=7063.2 KW
CE 2.3.3 Accomplishment and task performed
The project had many phases and all the objectives had to be accomplished in an
effective manner for the overall execution of the project. Team leader had divided the project
activities among the team members and everyone had to accomplish their sector of work in an
effective manner. I was assigned to the testing phase of the project for which, I had used

multimeter and recorded the value of the outputs. I had also monitored and audited the activities
involved in the project and tried to manage the project development in positive direction. I had
also plotted the graphs for comparing the outputs and inputs those were utilized for the execution
of the project.
CE 2.3.4 Identified issues and their solutions
2.3.4.1 Issues
I was testing the output voltage but at the first time, it was found that the developed
model is producing no power. The load at the early stage of the project was very high and the
system was not capable of handling the load.
2.3.4.2 Solutions
I cleaned all the joints and connected the wires properly again and thereafter, I used the
multimeter for the calculation of the output voltage. I had minimize the load in manner to make
the project effective and thus, it allows us to finally calculate the output of the project.
CE 2.3.5 Plan to produce creative and innovative work
I applied my skills for the identification of a system that can be an option for replacing
the existing non-renewable source of energy. I had produced a renewable source of energy that
can be used for the production of electricity that can be further used at the charging stations and
in streetlights. I had utilized the crank mechanism for the generation of electricity through
collecting energy from the vibration generated by the moving vehicles and their loads on the
road. Utilizing the waste energy generated while vehicles and men are running the road can be an
innovative approach for replacing the existing non-renewable source of energy. This approach
can also be utilized for lighting the streets, charging batteries, charging cars, and many more.

CE 2.3.6 Collaborative work
The project was successfully delivered because of the contribution made by myself and
my team members. I was appointed in the project to monitor the growth and development of the
project and I tried to provide necessary guidance on how to accomplish the objectives and goals
of the project. I tested the output of the project and depicted the graph for the output that was
needed for evaluating the efficiency of the project. Other team members did the electrical
connections as per my direction and technicians had to make sure that the connections are done
in effective manner. The team members delivered the mechanical setup of the model for
allowing the rotor to move whenever car or any other heavy transport passes over the speed
breaker.
CE 2.4 Project Review
CE 2.4.1 Project Overview
Produced energy is enough for supplying power to the streetlights as I had calculated the
output of the derived project and estimated that this energy is more than enough for the lights on
the streets. The calculated efficiency was enough to execute the project in the real life. The
output of the project resulted in positive manner and thus, it can be utilized in the real world.
Developed model is capable of fulfilling the needs and requirements of the electricity in the real
world and thus, it can replace the non-renewable source of energy. The project was successfully
delivered and produced out can be utilized for lighting the headlights and bigger models can be
utilized for producing more electricity.

CE 2.4.2 My contribution to work
I accomplished the testing phase of the project in manner to monitor the output and
efficiency of the developed project and tried to manage the activities as a teamwork. I calculated
the values of the output delivered by the project after the whole setup. I calculated the input
values (which were the load of men, vehicles, and running vehicles) ad output values (which
were voltage and power). I plotted the graph of the constant and changing variables that was
resulted in the positive aspects for the project.
