1PROFESSIONAL NURSING ROLES AND VALUES
Part A
Florence Nightingale Environmental Theory of Nursing has influenced my professional values
and goals.
According to this theory, the health of an individual is strongly influenced by the surrounding
atmosphere or the prevailing environment. The nursing professionals mainly apply theory in the
nursing practiced by making the surrounding atmosphere comfortable for the health-care service
users. Making a comfortable atmosphere deals giving importance to patient’s comfort, this can
be done by interacting with the patients, developing therapeutic relationships with them and
thereby helping to generate a comfortable surrounding with a patient-centered
approach(Zborowsky, 2014).
The identified theory fits into my professional practice as it coincides with the healthcare
work environment with aligning with the individual’s professional values, beliefs and inter-
professional collegiality.
Part B
Two eminent nursing figures of the 20th century are Clara Barton and Mary
Breckinridge. Clara Barton is known as America’s “Angel of the Battlefield”. She is the founder
of the American Red Cross and gave immense importance to the importance of the medical
supplies availability at the site war field(Hutchinson, 2018). Mary Breckinridge is the registered
nurse in the United States during 1910. She was the first person to introduce the concept of
nurse-midwifery in the US after World War I within American Committee for addressing the
devastated France(O'brien, 2017).

The Clara Barton influenced my nursing practice via making me understand the
importance of the availability of medical goods and equipment in the emergency department.
This can be done with the help of the computerized order entry and tabulation of the proper data.
Mary Breckinridge made me understand the importance of the midwives in the procurement of
the pre and post natal care. At present antenatal care is holding prime position in securing
successful delivery to pregnant woman.
Part C
The State Board of Nursing (SBN) is a non-profit independent organization in the US,
which holds the memberships of 50 states, Columbia districts and four different US territories. It
mainly looks after public health, safety and welfare of the population (National Council of State
Boards of Nursing 2018). American Nurses Association (ANA) looks after the professional code
of conduct of the nursing professionals operating in the US.
The SBN influences my nursing practice via helping me understand the importance of the
safety in healthcare and how the healthcare practice must be done in joint collaboration with
other reputed organizations and multidisciplinary team. The ANA guides me with professional
code of conduct like professional accountability, self-advocacy of the nurse and roles and the
guidelines of the nursing profession.
According to the Florida Board of Nursing (2018), the certificate or the license for the
practicing the nursing profession in Florida is required to be earned either by examination or by
endorsement. Both the avenues are open for Florida it is a member of the enhanced Nurse
Licensure Compact (eNLC). The a state which is a member of eNLC, a registered nurse licensed
in another compact stated is eligible for practicing in Florida without new license. However, if

Floridais transformed into primary state of residence then the candidate will require new license
within 30days otherwise he or she will not be allowed to practice (Florida Board of Nursing,
2018). As long asFlorida is a compact state there is no stringency of the nursing license
requirement specific for Florida. The license for any other compacted state will be suitable
enough for practicing in Florida as opposed to other non-compact state which requires separate
license (Nursing License.org, 2018).
Part D
Centre for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMMS) (2018) is a federal agency
operating within the United States Department of Health and Human Services. It administers
medicare programs by working in partnerships with the state government. The medicare
programs are directed towards providing proper insurance for the healthcare of children, adults
and maternity service. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is federal agency operated in
the United States under the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The
organization is responsible for protecting the public health through the controlled supervision of
the quality of the medical products, dietary supplements and other medical equipment and the
pharmacological drugs.
Both the organizations influence my nursing practice in the domain of professional
accountability. According to the professional accountability of the nursing professionals as
proposed by ANA (2018), it is the duty of the nursing professionals to perform advocacy on
behalf of the patients and to guide them with the best possible therapy which is cost effective and
this is what done by CMMS. The professional accountability of the nursing professional also

deals with ensuring quality care for the patients (ANA, 2018) by giving them right medicines and
quality service and this what ensured by FDA.
In order to promote patient’s safety who has opined for the alternatively therapy, it is the
duty of the nursing professional is guide the patients and help them perform in informed decision
making process via knowing both the pros and the cons and that particular therapy and the
intended outcome. In order to assist the patients in informed decision making, self-awareness by
the nursing professional through self-advocacy is also important.
Part E
The scope of practice for licensed nurses in Florida is guided by Nurse Practice Act
(Act). According to the Act, the nurses are accountable for the care they provide, and the care
provided by the nurses must be as per the nursing education and training policies. The nurses are
also required to stay updated about the current practice approach and trends and rules through
self-awareness (Nurse Practice Act – Nursing Board of America 2015). The Nurse Practice Act
thus helps to refine my nursing standards via defining my scope of practice and quality of care.
The scope of nursing for the registered nurses working in Florida is guided by three
different professional pillars and these include: (i) proper observation, assessment, nursing
diagnosis and planning; (ii) administration of medications and procurement of proper treatment
proposed by the doctors; (iii) supervision and teaching of other personnel in the nursing
professional (Florida Board of Nursing, 2018).
Delegation of nursing staffs under the non-school settings entails that delegator is
accountable for the proper delegation of tasks and care of the patient. It also says that the
delegator must not delegate to assistive performance which are unlicensed be it doctors or

nursing professionals. A delegator may not delegate a task, which falls out of practice, scope of
knowledge and professional competence of the delegator. Delegation of the nursing professional
under school settings deals with proper delegation of task under the presence of the trained
professionals and a registered nurse is required to train unlicensed personnel who will be
delegated for the task of administering the medication. Without proper training, the delegator
cannot not assign task to any unlicensed person(Florida Heath, 2016). The Assistance Guidelines
for the delegation of the nurses in the Florida mainly emphasize educational and public health
systems in order to ensure the common educational requirement of the nursing students in
Florida.
Part F
Scientist: Scientists are the person who discovers new things. So scientist in nursing
professional practice will deal with the discovery of new ideas like the evidence-based practice
in the nursing care plan procurement in order to improve the overall quality of care and patient’s
outcome. Evidence based practice is an important aspect of nursing and it is the duty of the
nursing professional to work stringently towards the development and implementation of the
evidence based practice(DiCenso, Guyatt&Ciliska, 2014).
Detective: The role of the detective is to elucidate or to investigate the hidden truth from
the underpinning clues or the evidences. The nurses also play an important role like a detective
in day-to-day nursing care. Nurses analyze the reports and the symptoms of the patients (clues)
in order to highlight the underlying disease condition (hidden truth)(DiCenso, Guyatt&Ciliska,
2014).

Manager of the healing environment: The role of the manager is to manage his or her
subordinates so that the work is undertaken under perfect synchronization. As a manger of the
healing environment, it is the duty of the nurse manager to control and co-ordinate the activity of
the subordinate nursing professionals in order increase the outcome of care(Kath et al., 2013).
Part G
Two provision for the ANA is: nurses must practice with within the ethical guidelines
like confidentiality and privacy (Provision: 6) and nurses must promote the healthcare safety
environment through competence in practice (Provision 5) (American Nurses Association, 2015).
It helps to influence my nursing practice via keeping perfect record to the patient’s data in order
to avoid any kind of practice error like medication error and at the same time it also educates the
importance of keeping privacy of the patient’s information.
A nursing error occurred within clinical practice include administration of the wrong
medicine (medication error) under the clinical settings.
Provision 5 can be applied to this error in order to improve the study outcome by
increasing the nurses’ accountability towards work and thereby reducing medication error and
ensuring patient’s safety. However, medication data must be kept confidential apart from the
concerned healthcare professional as per the provision 6.
Part H
Four leadership qualities of nurse are: Excellent communication skills, critical thinking,
empathy and mentorship.

“A leader at the beside” is require to communicate actively in order keep the patient
updated about his or her current health condition. Leader must also practice critical thinking in
order to highlight nay impending threat to health condition from symptoms. A leader must also
show empathy towards the patients, feel concerned about him or her and provide proper
mentorship to the other subordinate working for that patient(Gausvik et al., 2015).
At the inter-disciplinary team must communicate actively for the proper exchange of the
information between the different healthcare professionals. They must also execute critical
thinking in joint collaboration for betterment of the patient’s health. In the inter-disciplinary team
must also execute empathy towards each other while giving proper mentorship and heading the
team(Gausvik et al., 2015).
Nursing leadership is very important under the work-environment for conflict
management and maintenance of professional standard. Decision making skills is important at
the time of emergency. Also decision making skills is a part of the nursing professional code of
conduct in order her the role of the nurses is to assist the patients in decision making by giving
them proper information about the disease progression and the impending outcome of the
therapy. Professional development under the domain of nursing must be continuous and this
must be as per the prevailing trends in the nursing practice and the norms(Wong,
Cummings&Ducharme, 2013).
