EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Urban Parks are defined as a public space which are usually built and maintained by
government organisations in incorporated locations so that the city public has access to
recreational activities. The tourism industry has potential for development in Urban parks as it
attracts a large number of tourists. In addition to this the event sector has various opportunity to
conduct various types of events such as social and cultural events in Urban Parks. The events
industry faces various challenges in conducting events at Urban Park which include extreme
weather conditions. Urban Parks also effect social and environmental activities. Well funded and
well maintained Urban Park help reduce pollution and improve health of the local community.
Government bodies which are tasked with creation of Urban Parks need to add sustainable
elements to their Parks such as solar panels and other technology which increases the
sustainability of the Park. Social elements are also impacted by Urban Park as the local
community regular meets in such places which increases moral cohesion of residents which live
in the surrounding areas of the Urban Park. Government bodies need to dress various challenges
associated with Urban Parks and take action to improve associated benefits for the growth and
development of Urban Park and subsequent growth of the tourism industry.

INTRODUCTION
Urban parks or municipal gardens are defined as park located in municipal corporation
areas such as cities, towns, charter townships and villages. Construction and maintenance of such
areas is undertaken by local government authorities or given to a park conservancy or private
organisation. Birkenhead park is considered to be the first Urban park, which is located in
Liverpool, UK and was designed by Joseph Paxton. Play areas, gardens, running paths, bridle
path, picnic facilities and public lavatories are some attributes of the Urban Park which may
change depending on geographical features of the region and budget of the body maintaining the
park. The main aim behind construction of Urban Park is to provide the public assess to green
areas which reflect natural surrounding of the area. Urban parks provide various environmental,
economical and social benefits to the community living in surrounding areas. Creation of Urban
parks bring economical development to surrounding areas by increasing property value and
tourism activities. The advantageous environmental and social impact of Urban Park include
removal of air toxins from air which increases health of surrounding community and gives them
access to safe recreational area. In addition to this Urban Parks also reduce temperature of the
surrounding area, filter rain which reduces water pollution. An example of beneficial Urban Park
is Cyfarthia Park which is located in south Wales. This park has helped in economic
development of surrounding area by increasing visitation of tourists. In addition to this the park
is beneficial to local community as it provides accessible recreational area to the local public.
This sustainability measures of the park such as rainwater harvesting, green roofs and transpired
solar collector system have made a significant contribution to lowering carbon emission of the
area. The main barriers associated with Urban Park are degradation of greenery due to overuse,
dispute between users for space, budget constraints, gentrification and replacement of residents
with low socio-economic status. Doxford Park is a park located in city of Sunderland, UK is
facing decline and neglect due to budget constraints which has resulted in poor conditions of the
Park. The report aims to analyse the impact of Urban Park on tourism, hospitality and events
industries. Effect of Urban Park from an environmental and social prospective are also analysed
in this report. With the help of this analysis recommendations for maximising benefits and
minimising challenges are given in this report.
