Introduction
Values are identified as goals and ideologies which establish behaviour and provide a
foundation for decision-making. Nursing is a profession embedded in professional ethics and
ethical values. Nursing performance is based on these values. The following essay will
provide a reflection of professional and personal values to professional path of nursing.
Body
In recent times, nursing professionals are required to have knowledge and
understanding related to professional values as standards in order to deliver safe and excellent
ethical care. According to Poorchangizi et al. (2019), nurses’ perspective on professional
values influences their competence of judgement and patient care. As a professional with
nursing qualification, I have understood the importance of having imperative professional
responsibility towards the work I do. To my understanding, the nurse has a duty of self-
respect and morality to me and to the individuals around me which primarily includes my
patients. Professional responsibility in nursing refers to the moral and principled obligations
permeating the profession. Furthermore, in nursing profession, I believe that my
responsibility is to accept personal responsibility for my actions and decision-making.
Additionally, nurses are needed to espouse compassion and show respect for self-
determination of patients irrespective of their ethnicity, age and gender. Thus, while being
engaged this nursing profession, I rely on having self-respect, and respect for other and
maintain continual professional growth and commitment towards lifelong learning. As a
nursing professional, I have embraced teamwork approach as another imperative value to
care delivery with effective communication skill as well as shared care coordination.
Teamwork contributes directly to responsibility in nursing (Kim, 2018).
On the other hand, nurses typically experience stresses due to their work setting,
psychological or social circumstances. I have embraced stress management as another
