INTRODUCTION
Managing projects is said to be a practice that consists with a range of elements like
initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and lastly monitoring if the final goal is achieved or
not. Here, it can be said that the primal objective of a project manager is to attain specific goals
and objectives to attain goals of a particular project within specified constraints (Basu, 2017). In
present report, firm which has been chosen i.e. ABC PLC, who has a history of making
successful mergers and acquisitions in support of its strategic growth objectives. Company has
decided to do acquisition with DEF Ltd, which is a business organisation dealing or operating at
market as a high street frozen food retailer. Report is going to be enclosed with a range of things
like Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Gantt Chart and number of risks that a project carried in
present time.
TASK
1) a. Key characteristics of any project
In present time, a project carries ample number of characteristics and these are presented
underneath:
Project is basically developed for betterment of both company and of targeted customers.
A project basically stays temporary in nature and it typically consists with both start
along with the end.
Along side this, a project basically stays unique in nature as it carries a set of
requirements that a project manager looks forward to fill across the boundaries of this
project.
Away with this, project can typically be more of a once off endeavour, rather than
something that’s happening all the time in a repeated fashion.
Including this, a project is not ‘business as usual’, which is more akin to a process
(Castro-Nova, Gad and Gransberg, 2017).
b. Purpose of the Project Initiation Document (PID)
It is being found that, main purpose of PID is to ensure that a particular project consists
with a commitment of attaining a particular aim or an objective. Another purpose that came in
front of Project Initiation Document (PID) i.e. to act as base document on a particular project, on

which Project Manager is working. With the help of this, all issues in regards to change can
easily be found out in specified time frame and through this maximum benefits can also be
attained right on time (Crowley, Hinchliffe and McDonald, 2017).
2) a. Scope Statement for a project
This is being considered as one of a crucial section, within a project that helps a reader in
understanding what research is all about just by reading the statement. Without a scope
statement, a project would not give any sort of benefits to both researcher and readers as well.
b. Role does the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) have in such a statement
The primal most role of WBS carries in a statement is that, it aid more accurately along
with specifically in organising the overall scope of a particular project (da Rocha, Kemmer and
Meneses, 2016). The most common way this is done is by using a hierarchical tree structure.
Work break down structure which is key part of project which organised the team work
according to the management sections. It delivers hierarchical decomposition of work to
executed project team.
3) Full project Gantt chart and identify the critical path. How many days does it take to complete
the project
A work breakdown structure starts with a large project or objective and breaks it down
into smaller, more manageable pieces that project manager can reasonably evaluate and assign to
teams (Dao and et. al., 2016).

4) Approaches exist to generate a budget for a specific project budget
A company financial plan is known to be budget hence in other words it is a set of
statements about finances as well as operations. It includes different different planning
approaches it also used various revenues and expenditures of organisational units. A budget is a
tool of planning and control which has beginning period and ending period with proper plan
structure (Dehdasht and et. al., 2017).
5) Rise of project risk and various responses to risk that may be taken within project
management
Risk is a loss or injury and hence project risk which is uncertain event which occurs in
effect of project objective. Hence it identifies and assess the risk and also minimise it in effective
manner. More over risk is infinite which play major role in negative manner into the project so
the project manner need to identify and have to manage the risk.

6) Quality methods (project evaluation, monitoring and control)
Project Evaluation: Project evaluation is a systematic and objective assessment of a
project which is either ongoing or completed. It involves collecting and analysing information
about project activities, characteristics and their results. Its main purpose is to evaluate the
project to determine its efficiency, effectiveness, impact and sustainability (Illiashenko and
Strielkowski, 2016). Project evaluation involves quantitative as well as qualitative evaluation of
project or research.
Monitoring: Monitoring a project refers to process of collecting, analysing and using
that information to monitor and track the progress of a project. This information guide the
manager or leader to analyse performance of project and its aspects to achieve determined
objectives. Monitoring is a supervising activity to ensure attainment of objectives and
performance targets (Görög, 2016).
Control: Controlling is a goal oriented function which is defined to ensure that activities
are performed as per planned activities. In order to attain planned results from subordinates, a
manager needs to exercise effective control over the activities. It is process to evaluate standard
performances to actual and make attempts to take corrective actions.
From the above statements it is concluded that project evaluation is the best quality
method as it evaluates the project both in quantifiable or qualitative manner. This can guide to
take corrective actions to improve the quality of products and services to attain the objectives
and quality targets effectively (Javani and Rwelamila, 2016).
Skills and competencies required by the Project Manager
Skills of a Project Manager:
For a Project Manager of ABC PLC, project management process is the most important
and decisive element where all process related to a particular project is performed. It includes
planning, organising a project, time and cost management and many others which assist
managers to achieve their preplanned objectives. Skills required for project management are as
follows:
Leadership- Considering all the information, while executing the program i.e. ABC Plc
is acquisition with DEF Ltd, project manager has to be the leader that may aid to achieve
project goals. Manager's responsibility is to plan for a project, analyse and evaluate the
decisions to run a project effectively and efficiently. When a manager leads a project like

ABC Plc is acquisition with DEF Ltd, through looking at creativity as an aspect, it also
influence lower management to perform their best to complete the project. Leading a
project for a manager is to coordinate with subordinates and take up their innovative
ideas which aids them to gain success.
Time Management: Manager of ABC Plc is acquisition with DEF Ltd., must have skills
to manage activities related to time such as meetings, seminars etc. Its a manager duty to
perform and motivate employees to work in predetermined time period. Completion of
work in planned manner and at time guides manager to attain desired objective and
profits. Improper time management creates dissonance among various departments of a
firm and lacks coordination among them (Noble, Liu and Hackett, 2017).
Communication: Among employers and employees there should be a proper interaction.
In ABC Plc while acquisition with DEF Ltd., to maintain harmony and sound
environment it is to create healthy communication among top management, employees,
customers and suppliers. It reduces conflicts and develop understanding in each and
every individual of an organisation. Proper communication in a company directs to gain
profitability and most important healthy surroundings (Remington and Pollack, 2016).
Negotiation: Knowing how to negotiate well could be considered as another crucial skill,
which is required by project manager of ABC PLC while acquisition with DEF Ltd. It is
hard for every single individual to keep satisfied while attaining specific goals of a
particular subject. This skill could help project manager in keeping all the parties much
more satisfied as per the requirements.
Competencies of a Project Manager:
Project manager in an organisation like ABC PLC i.e. dealing at international level must
have core competencies to regulate a project and identify the needs of project management
process to achieve desired results. Its a duty of manager to develop competencies related to
project in a company. Some of the core competencies required in an organisation are such as:
Conflict Management: It is necessary for a project manager of project like ABC Plc
while acquisition with DEF Ltd, to create harmony and sound environment. Without
proper interaction and good communication among the individuals of ABC Plc, it may
leads towards conflicts and disputes among them. Its a responsibility of a leader or a
manager of project to solve the conflicts of employees either with employer or peers.

(Sachdeva, Kapur and Singh, 2016). Therefore, it is necessary for a manager to have a
quality of managing the conflicts in an organisation.
Entrepreneurship: For the project manager of ABC Plc while acquisition with DEF
Ltd,, manager needs to have ability to identify opportunities and action to attain targets.
Entrepreneurship is an essential element required in an manager to accomplish objectives
of an organisation. A manager must regulate the project in innovative and differentiated
way. When manager have qualities related to entrepreneurship only then employees are
diverted towards their work.
Team management: It is an obligation for a project manager of ABC PLC to motivate
the subordinates and inspire them to achieve their preset plans and goals. It can be done
through leading them by giving some examples and creative ideas. Manager has to
resolve conflicts and builds relationship among employees. And managing team by
delegating them proper authority and power to work.
Role Model: This is being considered as another crucial competency, that could help
project manager of ABC PLC in successfully acquisition with DEF Ltd. This could be
understood with a good example, where team members while executing the plan would
directly act as their project manager and through this maximum benefits could easily be
gained right on time (Salah and Moselhi, 2016).

If it is talked about ABC PLC, project management is basically refers to the actions that
are being taken by a project manager in order to attain specific goals and objectives in specified
time frame. Along side this, project management is carrying five different phases, that could be
considered as particular process. These different phases are given underneath: initiating,
planning, executing, controlling and closing. Along with this, it is also required for a project
manager to constantly monitor & report as this will directly help ABC Plc in acquisition with
DEF Ltd. All of these phases are given underneath:
Conception and Initiation : This is being considered as the first stage, which could help
a company like ABC Plc in beginning with an aim of reaching to new heights in specified
time frame. This stage is a foremost step that need to be look down by the company in

initial level is documentation work. This stage basically enclosed with the two elements
and these are : Project Charter and Project Initiation and these presented beneath:
Project Charter: Clear picture is being provided of project on which the project manager
develops the statement in regards to chosen goal of developing the project. In present context, it
can be said that the business organisation i.e. ABC Plc, is looking forward to expand its business
where it will be required for manager to take into consideration of need of developing the
program.
Project Initiation: This phase of a particular project, basically contains the purpose,
secondary, primary and other goals as well. Definition and Planning : Planning is important part of the project management, after all
it is foundation of any project work so it is necessary to be worked and formed according
to budget . This is another step taking initiative role how to implement the plan for the
effective growth so planning is major part of the project management process, resource
need to be identified So ABC Plc which can make planing strategies to overcome the
competitors in the market place.
Scope & Budget: In present context,scope of a particular project, that ABC Plc is having
i.e. business expansion. Through this, all the individuals that are involved within the project gets
the proper knowledge in regards to how it will benefit to the company in near future. On the
other hand, setting budget could be helpful for ABC Plc as it will lead the business organisation
to reduce the chances of excessive expenses.
Work Breakdown structure: Distributing different tasks, among a range of group could
help ABC Plc in meeting all the tasks in specified time frame.
Gantt Chart: Another crucial method, which can be used by ABC Plc in meeting the
goals right on time. Through this, effective results could be gained right on time.
Communication Plan: Policy-driven approach, that is required to be developed by ABC
Plc. Through this, right on time all the tasks can easily be performed through effective
communication among different job roles that are being handled by individuals that are
performing tasks within the project.
Risk Management: This is being considered as the prominent phase, which is required to
be analysed in much effective and efficient manner. Through this, all the risks that are present in

time frame. Project launch or Execution : After planning the structured frame work another step is
implementing the work in proper manner, hence company project manger can work in
effective way by executing policies and rules in appropriate way. When planning
structures are been made by manger next another role that manger need to work upon is
to implementing the work.
Status and Tracking This is being considered as the essential phase, which is required by
ABC Plc to understand and just after execution, proper tracking is required to be made in order
to improve the benefit level.
KPIs: Planned Value (Budget), Return on investment, Resource allocation and more are
said to be some of the KPIs that will aid project manager in meeting all the requirements of the
project.
Quality: This is said to be one of the crucial element, which might aid ABC Plc's project
manager in keeping up the quality of project and so on.
Forecasts: Considering this section of execution program of ABC's project, it can be said
that final objective is directly going to be attained in specified time frame.
Performance and Control : This is the important part of project manager that all the
work which is been carried during the project work, need to be asses or monitored by the
mangers then only cost can be minimised in effective way. More over as ABC Plc the
company project manner which have to monitor all the work which is going to take place
in the project work. So it is the important role of manger to look after the work process.
Objectives: This is the phase, where project manager of ABC would require to look at the
desired objective that company is having and where the plan has taken them.
Quality Deliverables: Considering this approach, project could easily be finished with the
desired outcome with justified time.
Effort & Cost Tracking: Cost is required to be tracked in regards to all the extra expenses
that has been developed in project. Through this, project manager of ABC Plc could effectively
develop an effective strategy to execute the plan right on time.
Performance: Another crucial element, which needs proper attention and it will be
required for Project manager of ABC Plc to hit the targets in specified time frame.

Project Close :Another step that is included in the project management is need to close
project work and have to wind up project after execution of planned work force. However
ABC Plc company manger required that after completion of project plan next step is
winding up of work force in effective manner (Smyth and Vanclay, 2017).
Post Mortem: Just when the execution process and control procedure reaches to an end,
this phase comes in existence. Where project manager will analyse in detailed manner, what
alterations can be made in order to expand the business (ABC Plc).
Project Punch list: Considering this document, end of a project listing work not
conforming to contract specifications that the project manager of ABC Plc must complete prior
to final payment.
Reporting: This is the last, phase where all the issues would reach to an end. Here, all the
information in regards to the objective would be presented in front of the BOD of ABC Plc. This
section carries all the results that came in front of the desired objectives.
As a project manger of ABC company it is necessary to look after the project
management process so that all the downfalls can be reduced in effective manner and as [per per
above detailed description it can be understood budget which is important part of the project
planning and resources, so the project manger need to execute the work according the skilled and
innovative ideas which can make the project work success.
Project Life Cycle stages, processes, leadership, and administration and control problems
associated with managing the life cycle of this major project
Project life cycle is the process which aid the manger to identify the resources and help to
make initiative step for the development of the project work. So the work and purpose which
need to to be carried in to the project work is need to meet the objective of projects. The PLC
which includes four main stages which the project manager need to include for the success of the
company growth and important thing is that manager should have team leadership skill so that
objectives can be achieved at proper time (da Rocha, Kemmer and Meneses, 2016). So, ABC
company project manager which can be include these phases into the project work which are
been described below:-
Initiation phase: This stage is the first phrase of the project life cycle, the project
objectives and needs to be described and also to identify also analyse business problem
and finding the opportunities. As a project manager in this stage ABC company need to

meet the documentation verification work for more flexibility issues that can be taken
into consideration. As the team manager group should be assigned in appropriate way so
that every individual can achieve its targets and goals. As a team leadership skill manager
should have administration approach while taking into project work.
Planning Phase : Another effective planning stage is that in this stage planning which is
essential part of project work and hence allocation of resources and skilled labour
distribution which necessary required in this phase. As a project manager of the company
it is been need that proper resources should by used by the management team and
workers. Skilled workers should be allocated correct work place. Team leaders guide its
workers and groups who all are working in the project so the management team need to
coordinate the work so that out put can be done in effective way (Crowley, Hinchliffe and
McDonald, 2017).
Implementing phase : This part is implementing the plan of action which is been made
by the management. The proper ordination among the teams is need so that work is to bee
done. In this stage workers growth which have a proper way to gain the target. The
implementation stage in which budget plan is to be covered. As a manger of company
which need make a budget plan after that resources are to be covered by the management
team and hence workers working in the project work need to be covered in appropriate
way. Team leader need make their employees motivated in effective manner. Closing Phase : This stage after all the above stated steps the next is winding up of
project and the manager of the company have to take this step to prevent the work and
moreover manger need to close the project at proper time. All the work need to be
assigned in effective way so that proper management work can be concluded. As team
leadership mangers should make workers encourage and motivation so that output is been
expected in effective way.
Control problems associated with management life cycle :
There are certain problem which are been faced by the manger in the management life
cycle. Company of ABC Ltd. the manger is focusing such issues which are been conducted
below:-
Time management factor : Time is effective factor which affect the project in effective
manner and hence for every project work time plays major role and even duration of the

business growth which will affect the overall team work. For effective team work the
workers need to keep in mind about time. There is starting as well as ending period for
every project so the time elements which affect the team leaders.
Resources factor: Proper allocation of resources which need to be proper done so that
proper work can be distributed. In this skilled employees that have to work in affective
way and hence proper growth opportunity should be implemented. In the company of
ABC Ltd. Project manger some time not able to find out the skilled employees when ever
it is been need it not able to get at proper time so it create issues in the project work
(Basu, 2017).
Technological factor: An problem which is been seen in the project work is
technological factor, hence the tools and techniques which are been used by the project
manager which not upgraded or not up to the competitive way so this is also major
problem which is been faced by mangers. As per the project manager of the company
which need up dated technology that should be used by the workers in the project work.
CONCLUSION
As per the above mentioned detail report it can be concluded that work which is been
done by the project manger should be in such way that it brings best outcome to the project and it
is also been mentioned about mangers skills which need for the effective growth of project work
plan. It is also stated about the project life cycle and leadership quality which is need for the
growth of the business. The problem which the project manger is facing while conducting project
work. So these all points are be described through which project mangers can do te work
effective in proper time period.
