INTRODUCTION
Operation management is being referred to as the administering of the various practices
of business which involves working with highest level of efficiency within production of the
company. for the business to get successful it is necessary that proper operational management is
being utilised in order to improve the working and operational efficiency of the company. the
present study is based on GH Preston which was established in the year 1945 by George H
Preston. The company specialised in the steel fabrication and manufacturing engineering and
welding. The present study will outline the transformation model and the operational
performance objectives. Along with this process design and layout analysis will also be
evaluated with respect to GH Preston. Further in the end the two operational challenges and their
suitable solution will be provided.
TASK 1
Transformation model
For the company to become successful it is necessary that the use of effective operational
strategies must be used. The reason pertaining to the fact that when the proper strategies relating
to the operational management are applied then this will result in optimum utilisation of the
resources. Hence, for this the use of transformation model or the 4 Vs can be applied. This 4 V I
operation management is very important to be used as it guides in effective management and
improvement of professional services. This involves volume, variety, variation and visibility.
Volume- it is being referred to as the quantity in which the production need to be done so
that effective working can be managed. This is necessary to be decided in advance as all
the other decision need to be taken in accordance with the volume only. Thus, for this, it
is necessary that GH Preston take proper decision relating to volume because it is tool for
measuring the success of company. hence, as per the views Gölzer and Fritzsche, (2017)
this is particularly because of the reason that when volume of production will be more
then this implies that people are liking the product.
Variety- this involves the various categories of product or the service which the company
is being providing to the consumers. It is necessary for GH Preston that they provide a
wide range of variety so that consumers are attracted large in numbers. In this, the

company is providing different services to consumer like gas, welding, metal, minerals,
manufacturing general and many others.
Variation- it is being defined as level of demand changes over the time because of the
changes in external factor. It is very essential for the business, that they time to time
analyse the variation within the demand (Understanding the four Vs of operations
management – volume, variety, variation and visibility, 2021). In case GH Preston is
having high variation then this is not good for the company. thus, for this company need
to work in better and effective manner such that less variation is present in the business.
Visibility- it is referred to as the value chain of the business all put together. It is
necessary for GH Preston that they must effectively try to make all the operations visible.
This is necessary because in case the operation of the company is not visible to the
consumers then this will not attract the consumers. On the other hand, Farias and et.al.,
(2019) it is necessary for GH Preston that they must try to attract the consumers by
analysing their need and reflecting the value chain to the consumers as well. this is
necessary because when the consumer will be provided with all the information then this
will attract their interest and will work in better and effective manner.
Operation performance objective
For the effective management of the business it is essential that proper objectives are
being set and these need to be met by the company. these objectives guide the company in order
to plan and execute the plan in order to attain the objectives. The setting up of objective is
necessary for the effective working and operation of the company. the reason underlying this fact
is that when the objectives are set then the employees know that how the working can be
improved and this will result in effective improving of the operational efficiency of the company.
in case of GH Preston it is very crucial for the business that they set proper and effective
objectives. The objective being set by the company need to be very simple and in easy language
such that it is easily understandable by each and every participant within the company.
This is also very essential for the company as this will improve the working efficiency of
the company and will result in the effective objectives of the business. when the objectives of
GH Preston will be clearly set then this will be resulting in improving efficiency of the
employees (Parida and et.al., 2019). The reason underlying this fact is that when the business
will be having proper guidance then this will be increasing the operational efficiency. Hence, has

a result of this, the competitiveness of GH Preston will improve and they will be in position to
have a distinct advantage over other competitors. this is very essential for GH Preston to set the
objectives well in advance so it can be reviewed by others as well. In case the objectives are not
proper then this can be reviewed and changed by other people while evaluating the objectives.
The main objective of GH Preston is to register with both Achilles and Link- up for
utility vendor data base. And successfully accomplishing the SHEQ verification audit. This is
essential for the effective working of the business and management of operational process of the
company (Kozlov and et.al., 2021). The reason underlying this fact is that when the operational
efficiency and objectivity will be clear to each and every employee then this will be attracting the
employees to work in proper and effective manner. Hence, as a result of this, the objectives of
the company will be attained in proper and effective manner resulting in improving of the overall
performance.
Process design and layout analysis
For the successful working it is necessary that the company is having proper process and
design. The process design is being referred to that the process through which the business
analyses the situation and has intent of improving the business to produce in better and effective
manner (Kumar, Mookerjee and Shubham, 2018). The process design is the one which guides
the employees and other people to work in better and effective manner. For the effective process
design and layout analysis GH Preston follows the following steps-
Process requirement- this is the first step which involves the analysis of the requirement
of the process that is which kind of process need to be used for the production. It also
involves the fact that how the working of the process will be planned and who will be
undertaking what type of role within the process. All these things are being discussed and
established.
Team building- this is the second stage wherein GH Preston decides for the team which
will be used for the production and process of company. without people the working
cannot be done in proper and effective manner and this will be affecting the working
efficiency and quality (Ahmad and et.al., 2021). Thus, in this stage of process design the
team will be built on the basis of specialisation. This simply means that the work will be
allotted to the employees according to the areas in which they specialise.
Document Page
Planning and implementation- this is the stage wherein GH Preston make proper planning
and then implement it (Slack and Brandon-Jones, 2019). For the attainment of the
objectives of the business it is necessary for the company that they plan and implement
all the strategies in proper and effective manner. Thus, for the effective implementation it
is necessary for GH Preston to document all the strategy and the team allotments so that
there is a record what work is being done by which employee.
Audit- this involves analysing or auditing the market and the implementation of the
strategy (Choi, Wallace and Wang, 2018). This is necessary for the reason that when the
effective post implementation research is done then this will provide detailed information
relating to the implementation.
End of project- this stage involves ending of the project and in this the production has
been completed and all the product and services are being provided to the consumers.
TASK 2
Identification of two operational challenges
Two operational challenges in the GH Preston are,
Management overheads:
The management of the overhead of this organization is considered to be the issues which
occurs when the business is not able to properly manage the expenses which occur in the
organization. In the management of the overheads the coordination between the operational
management units is very essential. For this organization which has the business model of
production of steel fabrication, specialized welding and manufacturing of engineering company.
(Seita and et.al., 2020.) This business is able to analyse the production of the organization and
also be influential in the management of the operations. Excessive overheads are said to be very
damaging for the organization as lack of their management in timely fashion is a very big issues
for a business of any particular size. These issues can be said to be the management of the issues
which are said to be falling behind on rent, missing utility payments, office equipment and also
deflautation it the machinery. Some best methods in which the business can be able to solve
these issues can be with the help of analysation of the customer performance requirement which
is considered to be scaled down. In order to generate quick fixes to the management of the
overheads the business can utilize certain strategies such as cloud computing, free video call
services, telecommunication and where the possible, renting rather than buying can be
Document Page
considered to be a very cost saving method. This is the reason why for this organization
managing certain overheads is much more essential for management of its operations.
Monitoring Performance:
For the management of the effective performance monitoring the performance of the
employees and resources are said to be the very essential factor of consideration which allows
the business in understanding the operational capacity of the employees. Monitoring is the
regular observation and recording of activities which take place in a programme or project and
monitoring of performance is the observation of the work done by the employees for the favour
of the organization. The process of monitoring in an organization like GH Preston is considered
to be a very effective way in which the business can develop operational growth and also manage
the performance of the organization (Schleicher and et.al., 2018). In this analysation the
monitoring of the performance is not done properly which is an operational issue which is faced
by the business of the organization. Certain members of the team when are not able to perform in
the operations of the management it helps the business in the analysation of the production
capacity of the individuals. With the help of monitoring the business can also be able to make
sure that the performance is able to ensure the quality of the business management. In this
business it is important measure the progress of the performance as it is the essential for
maintaining the quality of the product and also the analysation of the business. Better quality of
the product helps the business in increasing the brand image of the organization. This is the
reason why the monitoring of performance is considered to be very essential for the having
efficient operational management.
Suitable solution towards the operational challenges
Solution for the management of the overheads of the business of GH Preston is to hire a
proper accountant which is said to be the essential factor which allows the business to understand
both the income and expenses of the organization with the methods of accounting (Lebedev,
Seregin and Arzhenovskij, 2020). This is a very effective way which provides the business
increase efficiency of the business. It is said that a cost effective strategy is a way which allows
the business in the development of strategies which help them in finding new ways in which they
can provide the business with analysation of the specific services which can be used for the
management of the different overheads of the organization. There can be individuals which are
less productive than other this business can find effectiveness in managing the overheads if it is

able to fire the employees which are not as productive as the other employees. Rehiring of better
employees will not decrease the productivity and help the business in the management of the
operations (Reed and et.al., 2018). Outsourcing can also be an effective strategy which can allow
the business in the development of the strategies as it is a method through which the business is
able to scale back or even stop the third party services which can help the business in the
management of the suppliers that can only be an outsourcing task which are said to be well
suited for freelancing methods such as accounting and marketing.
The suggestions for the monitoring of the performance of this organization can also be
suggested with some strategies such as the utilization of an employee whose responsibility will
just be monitoring of the other resources which work for the organization (Jiang and et.al.,
2020). Talking to the employees of the organization can also be used as a way which can allow
the business in increasing the performance of the organization. This can also allow the business
to increase the business to provide the business with the help of the management of the
employees which are failing to perform in the organization. Monitoring of the attendance can be
considered the best way of analysing the performance of the organization. It can be said that with
the help to monitor the absenteeism of the employees their performance capacity can be managed
and thus a strategy can be developed which can help in improving the organizational
performance. Utilization of techniques such as absenteeism can be considered the one of the best
way in which the organization can successful measure and monitor the performance of the
organization and its employees (Chen, Liu and Oderanti, 2020). In this strategy the business
utilizes the strategy of developing certain standards which can help in the development of the
strategies. Establishment of the standards can help the business easily analyse the performance
and also be able to develop a strategical analysis of the management of the organization. By
focusing on the groups which are eligible to the direct feedbacks which takes place in the
business they can be able to develop a strategical development of operation management of the
performance.
CONCLUSION
The above report concluded that operation management is essential for the effective
management of the overall business performance. This is essential as it will outline the actual
working of the company and how the work can be managed. The above study analysed that there
are 4 V which need to take care by GH Preston that is volume, variety, variation and visibility.

Further it analysed that setting up of clear objective is necessary as it will provide a base for
effective working. In addition to this, the process for design was also outlined. In the end the
operational challenge that is management overhead and monitoring problem was evaluated and
solution was recommended to it.
