INTRODUCTION Project design is considered as the first stage of the project in which the project structure, features, major deliverables and criteria for success are planned out. The main aim of developing a project design is to achieve the project goals. It includes five phases which includes initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and project closure (ProjectManagement Guide,2019.). Present report is based upon the case study of Project design and implementation, which discuses about the background and context of project, the trans-disciplinary models to underpin the analysis. Present report also discusses about the preparation and implementation and evaluating the effectiveness of the project phases. It also includes the skills and evaluates the action that was taken or not taken. TASK 1 I was in a team of 5 members and project was assigned to us which was based upon a case study of Project Placemen Design and implementation. This was the task which was assigned to us and we had to complete it on time before the last date of submission. When task was assigned we had to form a team of 5 members who have to work collectively in order to complete the task before the due date. There was the formation of a teams and some of team members were interested and comfortable to work in a team and some members were not comfortable to work in a team. During the team formation I was chosen as a leader of team which was a collaborative decision from the rest of the team members. I decided that we shall start to work on the project from 11/02/2019 which is going to be the first week of our project which was assigned to us. I decided to gather all the team member who were involved in a team at GSM library. This was the destination which was decided by me on the mutual consent from the rest of the team member in a group. On the first day of week it was like that team members were of the least interest to get to work towards the project and entire week was full of less interest and full of laziness among the team member of a project. When we started to work on a project we had a false start as no one in a team actually what they are working and what was the task actually assigned to us. This not knowing characters of the team members resulted in lack of interest and negligence within the team members which were involved in a project. But being a leader of a team I had to take an initiative to get the team on work and I have to take a decision how would I get my team members to get them to work. I took an initiative and I started a group discussion by delegating a project to each and every member of the team. I told them to read
entire case study for at least ten minutes so that they can get familiar with the case study and come to know what actually a project is which was assigned to us or on what we are working on. Also, we should come to know on what topic a case study was based on and on what we had to conduct a research on.After making ourselves familiar with the topic and case study I decided to assign each member a task related to a research so that they can make use of their knowledge, understanding and business skills to come up with a business solution which was required by Ben and Penny for their business. So they started to work on the tasks which was assigned to them and they worked with their own skills and knowledge and tried their level best in order to come up with a business solution to the problem which was faced by Ben and Penny within the case study. During the task I came to know that all members in a team are not same and each and every members has different ways of performing the task. I observed that some of the team members which were involved in a team were slow learner which took lot of time to understand and some group members were quick learner which grabbed the things very quickly. But it does not justify that one team member is better than the other team member as every one has different ways of learning and grabbing the things. It can be understood by this that, I observed that talking too much in a team that they are smart enough than those people which prefer to work with silence. I also experienced that silent ones are not dumb but they just need a proper leader or an idealist or proper starter which will help them in a right pattern towards the discussion at hand. During the task we had to face many challenges like formation of a team and choosing a leader of team but due to the effective ways of communication a leader was chosen by the team members without any prejudice and I was made the leader of the team. I as a leader faced many challenges in order to get the task done and it required a leadership skills in order to get the task done for achieving the objectives. Entire experience of the task was good and new for each and every member of a team as it was the first task which was assigned to us for which team was required. There were different feelings for each and every day of the week and my and my team members feelings changed at different stages of the task. I felt very good and excited to work in a team, it was my first experience to work in a team and most importantly I was chosen the leader of the team which increased my excitement. But becoming a leader also made me nervous as it was for the first time that I was leading a team. It was not an easy task for me to lead a team which is absolutely new with little or no experience. For this purpose I had to use my leadership skills as I was chosen a leader of a team, I motivate my team members as asked them to read the case study and get in a group discussion which gave them an idea what the topic is and why research is to be conducted. This was really important to do as a leader which gave them a kick start to work on a project. I assigned individual tasks and set individual goals which they had to be achieve in the first week of the project which was really important in order to bring them on a track to perform their tasks. There were two type of people in a group which I had to manage one who were quick learner and another were slow learners and I had to manage their work in different ways which was really important in order to get the task done which was assigned to them. During performing an activity in the first week although it was challenging but there were certain things which went really well like entire team worked as a good team members and we were able to set a proper collaboration and effective communication within a team. This happened because I used my leadership skills and motivated them to work in as a team and made them realise the importance of the project and how the project will benefit in the future. All the team started contributing towards the task and we were successful in achieving the objectives of the task which were developed in the first week of the project. The experience of the fist made us to realise many things which could help in future weeks of the project. There were certain problems which were faced by me and my team members which needs to be addressed in order to improve the performance of a team in remaining weeks of a project. For this purpose a plan needs to be
formulated which will help us in overcoming the problems which were faced by as leader so that I can improve my skills of being a good and effective leader which will help me to lead a team for the remaining weeks. TASK 2 1. Brief background and context of project This project is based upon a business problem which is face by the two business partners Ben and Penny. Ben and Penny were childhood friends and grew up together in North London. Penny had a certificate of hospitality and Ben did a short course in construction. At the age of 21 they setup a local industrial estate selling hot sandwiches and burgers which turned a huge success for them but sold this for £6000. Ben's dream was to establish a small guest house which had a fine restaurant and penny supported to the business plan which was established by them. With the help of the business plan they were able to successfully establish Monet Guest House and restaurant. It had net profit of £95,000 and turnover of £350,000 for the guest house and total net worth of restaurant was £150,000 and net profit of £45,000. During past 30 years Ben and Penny have taken certain decisions if their lives which took them away from the business. A meeting was held by Penny with its partner Ben in which Ben stated that he wanted to expand and diversify the business. He also stated that he is interested in establishing a Holiday Park near a lake which is already available in nature or hand made. This idea was liked by Penny and her husband for which they decided to sell Monet guest house and restaurant in order to develop a Holiday park. After selling guest house and restaurant which is of worth of £950,000 and £595,000. Holiday park will be built on lake side which requires a proper market research, buying of land, marketing strategies, operations and developing a project life cycle. 2. Trans-disciplinary models Trans-disciplinary model or theory helps in understanding the different disciplines among the team members. It enables the team members to exchange the pool of ideas and information, skills and knowledge at the workplace cooperatively (Binder, 2016). There are various trans- disciplinary models or approaches which can help in understanding the collaboration between the team members involved in a project. Multidisciplinary model can help in analysing the team members which have got variety of disciplines which are working together on same project. This can help in sharing of different ideas, skills, knowledge, etc which can help in successful formation of the project design. But there may arise the issue of difference in views or
disagreements as team members have got their own disciplinary lens. The team members may work on a same project but formulate their own project designs.Another model or theory is interdisciplinary model, it main goal is to transfer knowledge from one team member to another team member. Such process will help in creation of new project design. This model is helpful for the team members in informing the work between one another and can compare their individual designs (Hong and Feng, 2017). This will result in the flow of information among the team members which are involved in a project which will increase the collaboration and effective communication among the team members. As interdisciplinary results in the discussions and interactions this may create difference among the team members which needs to be minimised among the team members. Another model or approach is Trans-disciplinary which is the mode of collaboration in which team members totally work outside of their disciplines and from their own intellectual space (Transdisplinary Approach,2014.). Here the team members to work out of the boundaries that lies between the learnings, conventional discipline and teachings (Fraker and et.al., 2018). According to this model team members can come with unique ideas of project designs and provide a solution to the real world problems of the project which are faced by them. 3. Project phases Preparation:Preparation phase is the most important and vital as it will result in the success of a project and will form the road map towards the completion of a project. The specific goal is to establish Holiday park near any lake in Wales, London. For this purpose Ben and Penny have to make purchases of utilities, installation of the cabins, choose a proper supply chain from the resources can be procured. For this purpose a proper market research is to be done and marketing strategies are framed and proper planning of human resources and operations plan is to done. Implementation Phase:In order to execute the plan Ben and Penny has to develop a team for the different department like marketing team, accounts team, operations team, etc (Pham, Fucci and Maalej, 2018). Resource will be assigned to different departments. In order to execute a project manager will be assigned which directs and manages entire project to make it a success. Evaluation of effectiveness:Both the phases can be evaluated by measuring the project is on schedule or not and is within the budget. These plan formulated and goals set has been easily achieved by the marketing team as they were able to make a proper market research (Gandhi and et.al., 2016). Skills developed to solve the work based problems For the completion of a project there are various skills which are needed, but to deal with the problems which may arise at any phase of project also requires skills for it. Various skills that were developed to solve the work based problems are team working skills; many problems were faced during a project which were dealt with the effective team work between the team members. There was the trust among the team members and were supportive towards each other. Another skill which was developed was problem solving and decision making skill; as there many problems which were faced during the project and these problems have to be provided with a feasible solution which increased the problem solving skills (Dobre, Kahng and Li, 2015). Also, decisions has to be passed to complex situations that were faced during project which improved the decision making skills. Project also developed research skills; in order to define and solve a problem it requires a research this may be simple internet research or in depth research which helped in improving researching skills. Another skill which was developed due to the research was communication skill there has been an effective communication between the members which were involved in a project. This communication skill helped in solving the complex problems effectively and also helped in understanding the role and responsibilities to the people which were involved in a research project so, these were the skills which were developed by solving the work based problems. 5. Analysis and evaluation of the actions There were various actions which I had to perform during the project as it was my responsibility to complete a project on preassigned date as I was chosen head of a project. So I had to perform various actions like I was responsible for making the major decisions of the projects and I was responsible for assigning the tasks to various members which were involved in a project. I kept on motivating team members whenever I observed there is a lack of motivation and enthusiasm in them and this helped in improving their work performance at higher level. As, I was chosen the leader of the project I make approve and disapprove the project designs and I chose only those project designs which I felt were suitable for a project. As a head of a project I had to keep track on the improvement that were made during project and also track the performance of the team members. This helped me in getting the work done on
time check the performance of the team members. I had to also provide the solution to the problems which were faced by the team members and take a complex decisions whenever I was faced with difficult situations as it was my responsibility to take decisions. So, these were the actions which were performed by me as leader of a project (Zhang and et.al., 2015). Besides this, I also looked after the proper planing of the services and thus will lead to a significant rise in carrying out of operations which are been followed within the firm. This will lead to rise in carrying out of the services which supports a significant rise in operations which will supports a good rise in improving quality of services offered by the firm. It can also be said that the proper communication with employees and all the people working on this project will look after proper assessment of operations which supports a good rise in carrying out of services in a suitable way. This will help in improving the quality of services in an effective way. All these measures will lead the organisation to carry out operations which will support a proper rise in placing of project development measures such as establishing of Monet Guest House. This will help in improving the sales and meeting of suitable growth measures which will support good rise in the operations (King and et.al., 2015). I will also look after improving the communication and understanding between both the partners, In order to mitigate any sort of indifference and conflict at the work place. All these measures will support a good rise in carrying out of services and thus, leads to rise in carrying out of services. The cross cultural and company based employee relationship is been avoided in order to carry out the operations and suitable relationship among employees or stakeholders. All these measures leads to setting up of operations and measures which will lead to improvement of the services and facilities that are been offered by Monet Guest house. 6.Learning undertaken from the portfolio of evidences like logbooks and critical incident diaries or feedbacks From the execution of this project, I can say that the project has relatively helped me to improve my understanding regarding the management of a project within the organization. This will help me to gain a good information about the knowledge I'll need to set up the Monet Guest house in an effective way. The proper evaluation of the plans and assessment of the actions that are been carried out by the organization or its management will help in proper evaluation supports the development of various models and action plans which will help in carrying out the operations in most effective and significant manner. This will help in proper rise in improving
the sales and meeting of operations which are been carried out by the firm. This will help in proper planning of services and carrying out of needs that are followed within the organization in an effective way. I believe that the adoption and implementation of various models like Trans- disciplinary, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary models are been carried out that will help in proper planning of services and thus, help in proper planning of services and thus will lead to significant rise in carrying out of project development measures which will help in proper planning of services and other facilities which are been carried out within the organization that will help in carrying out the suitable growth of the measures which are been carried out by the organization. They will look after the coordination which will help in setting up of operations and action plans which will lead to rise in effectiveness of the operations leading to meeting of their financial operations which are been carried out by the firm. Thus, will help in proper planning of services and carrying out of operational measures which will help in superior quality of services which will lead to improve the sales and carrying out of services in an effective way. I also found that motivating the work force and workers for getting the tasks done is a major challenge. However, I feel that it will help in improving the carrying out of the operations that are related to development of the guest house. The skills developed by me while monitoring and managing these project like extensive leadership skills, ability to make interpersonal communication and leading the employees by motivating them will help me to manage similar projects and operations in the future. Beside this, I will also evaluate and analyze effective documents like peer reviews, feedback's and logs provided by the other stakeholders working on the project. This will help in improving the quality of services and other measures which are undertaken within the organization. All these measures will help in carrying out of services and other measures which will help in suitable setting up of operations leading to rise of operations which are been carried out within the organization.
