INTRODUCTION
Human psychology is study in which minds and behavior of person is read and analysed.
It allows in understanding human behavior and how it responds to surrounding environment.
Every individual behavior differs from one another. Also, it changes with change in situation.
However, there are several therapies of improving human behavior which is applied. For
example- CBT, PCT, etc. the use of therapy depends on patient needs. The therapists are expert
in understanding psychology (Kinsinger, 2017).
In this essay it will be explained about two therapies that is PCT, CBT. Also, it will be
explained how counsellor use that to work with patient. Moreover, difference and similarities of
two approach is discussed. At last which appropriate approach is suitable is discussed as well.
MAIN BODY
A summary of how the client could be understood from the perspective of the two different
therapeutic modalities-
Case study has provided details about 46-year-old Vietnamese man who had come to see a
counsellor in the local community health center, about his self-described inability to understand
hi 19-year-old twin son and daughter. It has also been analyzed that man was widowed 5 years
ago. It has been analyzed that the perspective of man can be understood by two different
therapeutic models. It includes the following analysis:
Person centred approach: It is also known as Client centred approach. In this the
therapist are been involved in analysing patients thought from their perspective. According to
this approach Health care professional needs to be engaged in providing dignity and respect to
patients with whom they are dealing with (Person centred care, (2020). In case of Hung this
therapy will be effective as it will allow them to have control over the way in which he is feeling.
This counselling can be helpful to Hung as it can assist him in exploring his feelings and by this
therapy patient can know about reasons for inability to understanding his twin daughter and son.
Cognitive behavioural therapy: It is a short therapy, that can support an individual in
changing their ways to behave and can also assist them in modifying their set thoughts and
behaviour (Zettle & Hayes, (2016). It has also been evaluated that This therapy can be helpful in
case of Hung and counsellor can be able to understand his thinking well by analysing ways in
which he thinks. It can also be helpful for Hung as this therapy can be used to lower down stress
level of him by giving Hung power to cope with his complicated relationship with his children.

By this approach he will also be able to understand the thought process of his son as well as
daughter.
A description of how counsellors from each therapeutic modality might work with the client.
Counsellors can easily be able to identify the problem faced by client by making use of
person centered approach and cognitive behavioral therapy. In the PCA counselor can be able to
develop ability in patient to deal with their own thought process and they can also make client
learn about how they can selfheal. This can be useful in case of Hung as he is having problem, he
feels alone and helpless to deal with the latest changes going in his life. This approach by
counselor might work with client as it can assist patient in developing their own strength and
ability that can assist patient in living independently and be able to fulfill what they desire. It will
assist counselor in enhancing health outcome of patient. It can be useful in case of Hung as he is
unable to cope with the way he thinks and he has no control over it. I have been able to know
that There are wide range of approaches which can be used by counselor to better understand
patient like self-management and better decision making. Counselor needs to make sure that this
is being provided in supportive environment.
The other approach that is cognitive behavior therapy, this can also work with client as it
will assist counselor to engaged with patient so that their stress can be reduced. By this therapy
patient will also be better able to deal with the common life challenges such in case of Hung.
This approach is specific, goal oriented and problem solving approach (Bazzano, (2016).
Counselor and patients’ needs to work together to find solution to issues. According to this
theory health care professional can assist patient in developing better ways so that they can deal
with the challenges. Hung is presently afraid that he will lose his children and they will adopt
western culture because of their surroundings. He is unable to deal with this issue and his stress
is increasing day by day. In this counselor can provide patient with support and will help them in
enhancing new habits so that Hung can act in better ways.
An identification of the main differences between the two approaches in working with the client.
Person centred and cognitive behavioural therapy are two different approaches that can be
used by health care professionals to enhance health outcome of patients. It has been analysed that
PCA is a long term strategy in which the counsellors and their observations are being used to
treat patient (Dobson & Dobson, (2018). There are various principles that are being related to
this approach. In this therapists needs to make sure that respect and dignity is being given to

patient while treating them. I have evaluated that Like in case of Hung, it is the responsibility of
counsellor that Hung should be made comfortable and also respect must be provided to patient
about the way he thinks and act. This approach can be useful in providing possible health
behaviour of patient.
On the other hand, CBT is a short term problem solving and goal oriented strategy. In this
health care professionals are being involved in having better understanding of patient’s action
and motivation. In this therapy therapist needs to be engaged in taking feedback from Hung
related to sessions that are being provided by them (Boyer, (2016). Various techniques are being
used by counsellor while providing this therapy like for example they can motivate patient to be
engaged in role playing activity. This can be useful for Hung as he will be able to know about the
way his children think.
Similarities between two approaches in working with client
It is analysed that there are several models which are used in giving behavioural therapy
to patient. This enables in understanding their behaviour and determining their needs. In present
case study PCT and CBT approach therapy was given to Hung. So, here, I realised that, person
centred approach focus on patient feelings that what help is needed. Besides that, it helps client
to think in more optimistic and positive way. Through that, patient is motivated to move in right
direction in positive way (Hayes. and Hofmann, 2017). Basically, PCT approach deal with how
individual thinks about themselves apart from how view of counsellor. So, here therapist
understand human behaviour from their perspective. Also, he values and respect patient thinking
in all aspect with open mind and genuine. With that it becomes easy to understand individual
feelings and perception. the approach enables in personal growth of client by utilising their own
strength and identity. here, it is easy to identify what issues patient is facing so that it can be
solved. hence, depression, grief, etc. are overcome with help of PCT approach. So, it focusses on
self-esteem, reliance etc and help individual to reconnect with inner feelings. CBT is therapy
which enable people to learn and make changes in their pattern which have a negative impact on
behaviour. Thus, it emphasis of changing negative thoughts. Furthermore, there are various types
of CBT therapy which is given
In my view, I found that similarity between both approaches is that it allows client to
analyse own behaviour through self-actualisation. This means that both help in improving hung
behaviour and in order to deal with his inability to understand children needs. Furthermore, both

alongside, each model is useful in changing one behaviour and action from their own view point
and perception. this is not done on basis of therapist suggestion. Moreover, in both model there is
change in process of psychological adjustment focusing on individual perception difference
between self and life experience (Carpenter, and et.al., 2018). In addition, it is stated that both
models use condition of emotions, positive regard and congruence. so, there is effective
relationship between client and counsellor and it uses skills of reflection and then summarise it.
besides that, there are some sessions conducted before ending therapy. However, both uses
awareness techniques in order to make patient aware about his or her actions and self-reflection.
Evaluation of which approach is appropriate in working with client and why
By analysing the case study, it is evaluated that CBT approach is appropriate in this. It is
because it allows individual to learn and change their behaviour. So, here Hung negative
thoughts will be changed. the therapist will be able to engage highly with hung. Thus, mental
disorder will be analysed and on basis of that changes are made. Besides that, CBT will be used
for short term goals and outcomes. In that hung will be responsible for its own outcomes. hung
will analyse that his own thoughts and emotions are responsible for how he behaves and feel.
Therefore, on basis of that changes will be done by him. However, this therapy is chosen as hung
is not suffering from any severe mental illness or disease. Hence, it will be suitable to use CBT
approach. In addition, CBT will allow in understanding hung emotional belief and on basis of
that feelings are analysed. therapist will develop strategies which is incorporated by hung in
daily life. Thus, he will be able to cope up with stress and loneliness in better way. By bringing
changes in daily life hung will concentrate on his work (Lumley, and et.al., 2017). it will bring
improvement in his life by making changes. He will have control over his feelings and emotions.
Through that, hung will focus on his behaviour and changes it. this will be led to bring positive
change in it so his feelings will change bringing positivity. Apart from that, I found that CBT is
simple approach as compared to PCT. The therapist does not have to understand patient feelings
in his own opinion. With help of CBT hung will be able to develop relation with his children and
friends. This will benefit hung in spending quality time with family. Then, this will change his
feelings and he will be able to understand his children in effective way.

On contrary, PCT approach is not suitable as it may not address all the problem and issues
of client. In some cases, this approach has not given relevant outcomes that has hampered on
self-actualisation process. With this therapy he will only know about reasons for inability to
understanding his twin daughter and son. Thus, his feelings will not change and he will not
understand why he behaves in such way (Kinsinger, 2017). So, PCT therapy is not relevant to
this case study as it only support individual from his own view point.
CONCLUSION
From the above essay it has been summarized that PCA assists in developing the individual
capability to deal with stress and also cope with the real life challenges. This counselling session
has also assisted client in having better thought values and beliefs so that stress can be reduced
down. It has also been analyzed that therapy is being useful in enhancing health outcome of
patient. CBT has support patient in solving their own problems by changing the way of thinking.
It has also supported patient in being involved in better self-management. Thus, this approach is
most appropriate in working with Hung.
