be looked out by an organisation. Along with this, they are required to maintain quality of
their products so as to sustain their valuable customers for a longer period of time. This
research is being conducted in order to know the impact of Total Quality Management
(TQM), for improving quality of manufacturing process within an organisation.
In order to know about Total Quality Management, first it is essential that we
understand what quality is. “Quality” is defined as a parameter with the help of which, one
can have an understanding about a products or service whether it is inferior or superior.
Unlike this, TQM, is considered as a customer-oriented process which aims to provide
continuous improvement to companies by detecting or reducing errors so that their operations
can be conducted smoothly (Fullerton, Kennedy and Widener, 2014). This make sure that
employees focus on a particular target so that full concentration can be given to the improved
quality of the product. Total Quality Management, has its key elements such as employee
empowerment, Continuous improvement, commitment of management, customer focus.
Major benefit from TQM is to creating awareness about quality culture within the respective
company.
Overview of organization
VOLVO, an automotive industry of Sweden, is one of the multinational
manufacturing company with its headquarter situated in Gothenburg. In the year around 1927
i.e. approximately 93 years ago company was founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav
Larson. VOLVO has 12 brands in around 190 markets and production facilities in near 18
countries and in this approximately more than 100,000 employees are doing their best to
maintain the reputation of the company. VOVLO group, has diverse operations and mainly
working in transport solutions, buses, construction equipment, manufacturing trucks etc.,

Besides this, company provides financing services and all these helps VOLVO in increasing
customer’s base.
VOLVO Group, has managed to established a leading position with respect to other
companies on a global market. Their main mission, vision and aspiration is to provide
effective transport solutions throughout worldwide. Innovation with the change in course of
time is their prime motive for example: automated driving, electromobility, connected
vehicles etc., are their major services.
Background of the research
With the help of this, concept of Total Quality Management i.e. TQM will become
more-clear as it will provide a detailed overview of the topic. Total Quality Management, is
considered as an approach which is structured and mainly focuses on continuous
improvement of products and services. TQM, was originated and used by industrial sector of
Japan and since then it is being adopted by most of the organisation for effective results
(Hossain, Tasnim and Hasan, 2017). Earlier, goods that are poor in operations, failed
products etc., used to take a lot of time but now with the help of this, company can save time
and remaining time can be utilised in manufacturing more products.
Therefore, this research will provide with information about TQM is having an impact
on VOLVO and how Total Quality Management is improving quality of manufacturing
process. Moreover, whether company is following and maintaining International
Organisation for Standardization (ISO) i.e. ISO 9000 series while developing their goods and
products.

has always been a competition between what to use whether aluminium or steel while
manufacturing vehicles. According to traditional way of manufacturing automobile steel is
more compatible because of its formability, strengths and affordability. However, since 1920s
aluminium has been a part of automobile industry but are expensive as well. Therefore, for
VOLVO, choosing the right material can act as a challenge for instance: for small cars
company can use aluminium products but for heavy vehicles organisation in order to

Quantitative: As its name suggests, it helps in converting data into numerical form so
that it can further be represented in statistical form. With the help of this drawing conclusion
becomes easier. Human minds can easily rectify data and develops an image of the same

Therefore, for conducting this research both qualitative and quantitative method was
used with a perception that, former will help researcher in analysing and understanding
people’s behaviour for example: how an employee feels about Total Quality Management
and its implementation in VOLVO company. Whether TQM is providing any kind of benefits
in terms of maintaining quality of the products or not. On the other hand, quantitative method
was also applied so as to measure performance of company at market level as quantitative
method will provide numerical data with the help of which statistical representation can be
made. As a result, it will help researcher in analysing how company is performing as
compared to other firms. What was its sales whether it was high or low as compared with
previous years. Besides this, data of sales will also assist researcher in knowing behaviour of
customers if they are liking their product or not. Henceforth, both the methods tend to
provide appropriate information.
Research philosophy: Under the research activities, philosophy is referring to the belief
towards the way in which data should be gathered, analysed and used with the aim of
generating reliable results within the whole investigation. Thus, it is crucial for investigator
effectively analysis the facts and figures in order to develop an authentic framework towards
the specified area of research. In this context, there are two type of research philosophies
such as positivism and interpretivism. Both are play a crucial role in gathering data and
information about particular theme of topic as well.
 Positivism research philosophy: It is an effective way for gathering realistic data
because this type of method is believed that reality is stable in nature and also easily
observed and described from particular objective viewpoint. Along with this, it
defined that phenomena should be isolated and along with this an observation should

 Interpretivism research philosophy: This type of method that is focus in interpret

a study with the aim of generating reliable and authentic outcomes. Along with this, it
also beneficial for researcher that determines as well as appreciate differences
between people and their interest towards the specified topic and area as well. One of
the main advantages of this type method is to naturalistic approach that may aid in
collecting reliable and measurable data and information.
For undertaking this research, investigator will select interpretivism research philosophy
as it helps in indicating that researcher needs to understand about the difference between
human in context of their opinion and roles as a social actor. With the use of this, investigator
can easily understand the actual views of selected respondents about research theme as it is
measurable in nature that help in attaining reliable outcomes at the end of the investigation.
Research approach: While undertaking research, it is crucial for researcher to determine the
framework in which research activities can be done systematically. It is classified on the basis
two type pf approaches such as inductive and deductive.
 Inductive research approach: The main focus of this type of method is to use
existing theories to undertake an empirical study to take right judgement. In this
regard, the main strategic point of this approach is to collect data and at the same time
also formulation of theories from the specified results. Along with this, it is also
effective for quantitative studies that contributes in attaining positive and realistic
outcomes.
 Deductive research approach: This type of method can be relied about the thinking
by the logical way and at the same time researcher also use theories for drawing a
valid conclusion within the research activities. Mainly, it is based on theoretical
aspects that is based on already established facts and hypothesis as well.
To carry out this research, investigator will be applied inductive research approach as it
included beginning along with set of empirical observations that support in gathering actual

Research sampling: It is crucial for researcher to effectively collected data from various
respondents. In this context, it is referring to the process of selecting sample size from the
large population with the aim of collecting actual data and information from people. In this

method. By using this type of method researcher can easily draw a valid conclusion at the end
