1RACE AND HEALTH
The very essense of the first sentence of the article “Why the poor die young” written
by Derek Thompson that was broadcasted in the media portal of “The Atlantic” that says
“Geography is destiny” describes the central idea and theme of the whole article, which is
racial discrimination and segregation in healthcare all over the world (Theatlantic.com). The
article has tried to understand the geographical condition of the demography of the United
States in order to understand the disparity between the rich and the poor in the respective
nation. The article has talked about why the poor die younger and why do the poor die
quicker than the rich. One of the main reasons why the poor die younger in the United States
depends upon their accessibility to healthcare and other necessities, the environment where
they live and the inequality they are subjected to. On the other hand, the documentary named
“Unnatural causes... is inequality making us sick?” also talks about the inequalities that
people all around the world face, which can be inequality in opportunities, basic necessities
and healthcare that makes people sicker and kills them finally. The main theme of the
documentary goes well with the above mentioned article, which is “health and longeivity are
correlated with socio-economic status (socio economic status of a family determines where
the family would reside and what sort of environment the family would chooe/ or be
compelled to face while living), people of color face an additional disadvantage in the society
in terms of access to healthcare and that health and well being are the main aspects that are
related to the policies of social and economic justice in the society. Both the article and the
movie makes the readers and the viewers think about the toxic situation the poor, common
men, women and children are subjected to every day and every time.
The movie “Unnatural causes... is inequality making us sick?” is an important movie
in today’s epoch where capitalism has expanded to such an extent that every country is facing
a typical and most devastatingly toxic income inequality. Income inequality is making the
countries go lesser in the areas of human development index and such economic disparities

are causing premature deaths, crimes, violence, hunger and a complete chaos in the society.
The society of the humans where 70 per cent of the people are common man who are less
privileged and are at the mercy of the government are oppressed by both the government and
capitalism fueled by xenophobia and ethnocentric prejudices. Social networking medias also
play an important role by providing information of the plight of the common man and also by
creating imaginary xenophobia about the people of color in white supremacy induced
countries giving rise to hate crimes and racial discrimination in institutions like education,
healthcare and occupation. The movie is an eye opener as it discloses such conditions that
make the poor the poorest and as it is the norm, the rich become richest with the help of the
governments that are always with the capitalists, the rich and the feuds.
