GLOBAL COMMUNITY
Name of the Student
Overview of Organisation
Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit health
organisation based in Boston and had been founded
in the year 1987.
The primary goal of the PIH is to deliver the welfares
and assistances of contemporary medical science to
people who are in need, and serves in the form of an
remedy to despair (Partners in Health 2019).
The organisation works in poorest regions of several
developing nations and builds medical facilities,
hospitals, besides delivering healthcare amenities
and training the local staff.
The mission of the organisation is to deliver a
preferential option for people who belong to low
socio-economic section of the society (Partners in
Health 2019).
It also aims to establish long-term association with
different sister organisations that focus on poverty.
Some major projects of the PIH include eye surgeries,
Hodgkin lymphoma, depression screening, Malawi
support program, mental health programs, and flood
relief raising programs.
The organisation works in Haiti, Peru, Russia, Chiapas
Mexico, Rwanda, West Africa, and Malawi (Partners in
Health 2019).
Contribution to the Common Good
Advocacy for the common good is a major principle that
focuses on mobilisation of power and resources for dealing
with different community problems. The PIH focuses on
advocacy of the target population by valuing the opportunities
that are available, with the aim of voicing the requirements
and needs of the poor people in a constructive manner, such
that it leads to definite action (Partners in Health 2019).
The PIH also takes advocacy efforts with the aim of enabling
and assisting the healthcare staff to imagine and comprehend
a rights-based setting where they can enhance their
healthcare delivery skills, by receiving appropriate training
and providing care services to the poor (Partners in Health
2019).
The PIH also takes efforts for using and implementing program
evidence in order to support an improvement in healthcare
delivery, with the collaboration of policy makers.
The organisation is also working towards achieving Common
Good by enhancing its capability to frame and shape the
regional, local, and national health strategies and practices
(Partners in Health 2019).
The PIH also runs several education programs and prevention
campaigns for controlling and managing different diseases
like cholera, ebola, cancer and chronic diseases, and child
health.
All of the aforementioned advocacy efforts help the PIH to
foster a movement for health and social fairness.
My Professional Contribution
The profession of nursing is generally viewed as promoting the
concept of common good since it is able to accurately address
concerns that people living the community generally face
The profession also helps to take into consideration the outcomes
that are related to common good principles like distributive justice.
Justice encompasses a multifaceted ethical principle and also
encompasses treatment of people to equitable allocation
of resources (Madden et al., 2019). Thus, the nursing profession
creates the opportunity to provide fair and equitable treatment to
all patients, regardless of their background and socioeconomic
position in the community (Rainer, 2015). Thus, the profession
contributes to the domain of common good by ensuring
availability and accessibility of healthcare treatment, and focuses
on patient groups in the community that have been identified as
vulnerable population, and are not able to access resources.
While working as a nursing professional, adequate efforts are also
taken to preserve individual dignity towards the patients. The
concept of dignity is imperative in the healthcare profession owing
to the fact that professionals are expected to treat all patients with
respect, while promoting good communication with them. This
helps in maintaining dignity (United Nations 2019). While working
as a nurse, efforts are also taken to involve the patients in decision
making processes related to their health status, and associated
interventions. Respecting the personal space and possessions of
the patients also forms an essential part of nursing practice.
In addition, demonstrating respect towards social integrity of
patient who are vulnerable to a range of health ailments is also
addressed in the nursing profession. Demonstrating respect also
encompasses avoiding the use of medical jargons, and explaining
the patients their health status, the adverse consequences, and
the potential advantages of the interventions that are intended to
be applied. Hence, nursing profession contributes to this domain
by getting properly acquainted with the patients, understanding
their perspectives, communicating in an effective manner, and
replacing discrimination or labelling with positive approaches.

Introduction
The term common good is an umbrella term in the
domain of economics, political science, and
philosophy and refers to either what is beneficial for
members of a particular community, or what has
been accomplished by citizenship, active
participation in public service and politics, or
collective action.
The concept was set up by Greek philosophers like
Plato and Aristotle (Milne, 2017).
One basic understanding of the term, in relation to
the philosophy of Aristotle is that something that is
attainable only, and good to the community, while
being individually shared by the members.
